Oman travel part 4 Balcony walk Jebel Shams Sugar dunes
As soon as I saw pictures of the Sugar Dunes in Oman, I was sure I wanted to visit them. The book on off road routes we bought at Muscat airport suggested that the place is quite remote and it is no coincidence that most tour groups do not make it to the dunes. They are just too far apart. We decided that it wasn't a problem for us, and even getting stuck with the car the day before didn't stop us.
The morning was beautiful, like all the others so far, and the beach where we spent the night was crowded with birds. After all, we were on the coast of a small fishing town. Unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage, which I did not like at all. Al Kaluf is a quiet and peaceful place and the nature is fascinating, but unfortunately people don't seem to appreciate it.
We took the road to the sugar dunes. They are located 10 kilometers west of the town. Driven only on sand. There is no asphalt road. We met many people staying overnight by the shore near the dunes. Unfortunately there was rubbish again. Fortunately, however, the dunes we walked on were clean. Kilometers of white sand dunes. Real beauty. A surreal sight that captivates the beauty-hungry tourist eye. We noticed that construction has started on a large resort nearby, hope the place is preserved.
We enjoyed a short walk and took a long drive to Nizwa. After about 4 hours in the car, we drove past the city and headed for the nearby mountains. We spent the next few days on them.
The highest point in Oman is just over 3,000m, which is both surprising and impressive to many people. The first night we camped high in the mountains in a remote village. There were beautiful views and it was quite cold. On the second day, we reached one of the most popular places in Oman and Jebel Shams mountain - "Balcony walk".
Many people visit the place as a day trip from Muscat or Nizwa.
We were a little late on the trail and returned to camp at sunset, but it was for the best. At noon on this route it would be too hot. The canyon is impressive, the place where we stopped the car and spent the night was panoramic.
Those were exciting days.
Don't miss the next video from Oman.
