House of Lords

Күн бұрын

Hear from former Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Heseltine, as he speaks to the Lord Speaker about an extensive political career spanning almost 60 years in Westminster.
'Liverpool changed me. There's no doubt in my mind.'
Talking about his career in Parliament, Lord Heseltine said he hoped his involvement in the regeneration of Merseyside after the 1981 riots would stand as his political legacy. He told Lord McFall that one of the most moving moments of his life came when he was offered the freedom of the City of Liverpool.
In this wide-ranging interview, Lord Heseltine also discusses further devolution in England, the UK's relationship with Europe and calls for a 'Marshall Plan for the developing world' in order to tackle migration.

Lord Heseltine has some of the most interesting ideas on the right-hand side of politics. His ideas on local community level economic development, bottom-up growth modelling, re-generation, skill development, decentralization of power, devolution of authority, and race-related conflict resolution are always pertinent. Unfortunately, now, in the UK, such talent is in limited supply. The old guard needs to be replaced by the new generation of politicians who can speed up reforms, and policy revisions, and improve the speed with which they can deliver outcomes. That is what's lacking! A visionary leadership.

It is good in our present political situation to hear the voice of reason. Michael Heseltine is some way similar to Rory Stewart in that he values reason and sees that not all politics can be reduced to political parties.

"Tarzan" says it all so concisely and clearly: the UK needs to be fully inside the EU (just as it is in Nato) and not on an external fringe.

@@jonathandnicholson of course they are. One is a military defensive alliance, the other a political, social and economic union, created to ensure peace within Europe (which it has successfully done since inception). The Tory Party of Churchill, Macmillan, Douglas Hume, Heath, Thatcher and Major all supported membership of both entities. Its the 21st century lot of hard right ideologues that have destroyed that political mission.

I find this rather interesting in comparison to today's politics in the house of commons. Too much arguing over who is capable of doing the job and not enough solutions to solve the problem.

Competence is an issue when implementing policy. The argument is who not what (because what is agreed).

Now there's a proper Tory for you. The current government is a laughable parody of what being a conservative used to mean; as Heseltine says, his party has 'blown it'. Let's hope that they're decimated at the next GE (we'll get a clue with the 3 by elections this coming Thursday) and instead we get a govt. (maybe a coalition - I don't care as long as this incarnation of the Tories is out) which understands the importance of reconnecting with Europe.

I have a vision of building London Underground style networks across the Land and Lord Heseltine struck a chord there where He mentions Three interlocking circle's. Imagine Underground network's in a Round shape Underground connected to one and other, similar to London's Underground but reimagined with a different purpose. Linking in such a way that causes minimum disruption to the land and Greenbelts. Distribution of clean renewable energy. Better flow and circulation of goods and services to ease congestion and eliminate above Ground space usage. For example Underground Customs warehouse's. I know this would be an enormous financial and engineering feat but if successful could change the face of the UK forever. Just an idea 💡

I won't go so far as to feel sorry for Hezza, as he is a grillionaire who has lived like a king for most of his life, but it was really very unfortunate for him that he had a heart attack at precisely the point when he was virtually guaranteed to take over the leadership of the Conservative Party - and hence of the UK - from Margaret Thatcher. Suspiciously unfortunate in fact, as he never had heart trouble before that, and hasn't had any since. Perhaps Thatcher's people applied a watered-down version of a little "technique" that they learned from the Russians. Just sayin....
