I like to think Meet Me In The Woods and The World Ender are two different perspectives on coming back from the dead. The perspective in Meet Me In The Woods is a tragic, mournful reflection on life after a sort of death and rebirth event, where the lyrics show a fearful view on what becomes of life after what is supposed to be an irrevocable change. The World Ender is also clearly about a revenant who's back from the grave after having lost everything, but instead of being sorrowful about this transition he sees it as liberating and a chance to exact revenge free of moral bounds. Both songs incorporate a less than hopeful view of life after death which is common in Lord Huron's music but how they relate that reality to the world of the living is different. It's like the difference between a fatalistic and a nihilistic worldview which seems to be a tension held throughout Strange Trails as an album. On the topic of hope in knowledge of the end versus despair I think I have to bring up that Love Like Ghosts and The Night We Met share the same conflict, making it all the more important they're opposite to each other on the track list. In Love Like Ghosts the perspective of the speaker is sad but accepting and perhaps even becomes joyful in spite of the death of their relationship, but in The Night We Met there is no such hope. In the later song the perspective is despondent and can only look backwards in time, they acknowledge the loss but see the present almost passively with defeat. How one views the passage of time, the changing of what we thought was constant, and death in all its forms is a huge theme in Lord Huron's music, I really love their work with it.
