Lord James Blears takes on Leo Garibaldi in a great match from the Los Angeles territory. Not seen or available since it aired on TV, this is my transfer from the 16mm film I obtained. This is one of my latest purchases that I was able to make thanks to the support of the KZfaq ads and DVD's I sell.
Blears is one of the all time greats in professional wrestling. He was a former NWA Light Heavyweight Champion and multi-time tag team champion. He was a huge star in Los Angeles, Hawaii and Japan. He was also a WWII hero who led an amazing life, it's worth the time to look into his history. Leo Garibaldi was a great second generation star following in the footsteps of father Gino. After wrestling Garibaldi had a great career in booking and promoting wrestling. The referee is wrestling great Stanley Pinto and Blear's is accompanied by his valet Captain Leslie Holmes.
Thank you all for your support, the ad revenue from KZfaq helps me to purchase new films and continue with the transfers and uploads. This film was one of several I was able to obtain. All the films I purchase are made available to everyone who is interested in the Golden Age of professional wrestling. Please continue to support the ads and DVD's

Two absolute legends in the ring. Jules Strongbow later came out of retirement teaming with his brother, Chief Jay Strongbow in the early 1980s. Bronco Lubich was supposed to officiate this important match but he got hold of some bad shellfish that day at lunch and was unable to answer the bell so to speak.

Thank you very much for posting this match. It is great to be able to watch professional wrestling from the 1950s with such a good quality picture. And this is an enjoyable match, with a good contrast in wrestling styles between Blears and Garibaldi. Blears dishes out sustained punishment on Garibaldi's legs and arms to good effect, but Garibaldi fights back well.

Brilliant wrestling on the part of Blears. He focused on torturing the legs of Garibaldi once he managed to get them into a lock, and just kept applying the pressure without any mercy to secure the first pin. The second pin came quickly and easily, as Garibaldi's legs were pretty much like jelly at that point. Great tactics for the much older wrestler, as he knew he would likely not win a contest of endurance. Crushing the legs of Garibaldi in a lay down lock also allowed Blears to save a LOT of much needed energy. Garibaldi may have had the brawn, but Blears definitely had the brains. Excellent win for Blears!

Why was it a shame for Garibaldi to lose because he supposedly had better technical abilities? Lord Blears was the older, craftier and by far the more intelligent wrestler. It was a 2 out of 3 fall match, and he set Garibaldi up by tiring him out and giving him a sense of overconfidence after Garibaldi got the first fall very late into the match. From there, it was all downhill for Garibaldi. Blears waited coolly and patiently before nabbing the overanxious and exhausted Garibaldi in that leg torture hold, easily forcing a submission. The third fall also went very quickly against poor Garibaldi whose leg was now probably numb and in sheer agony. BUT WHAT DOES HE DO? HE MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE THAT GOT HIM TRAPPED IN THE FIRST TORTURE HOLD, AND BAM, IT WAS ALL OVER. BLEARS JUST CALMLY APPLIED ANOTHER TORTURE HOLD, AND IT WAS CURTAINS FOR GARIBALDI. Blears knew that he did not have the youth and stamina to last out a conventional match, so it was imperative that he expend very little energy throughout the match by dancing around, calling time outs, and relaxing a bit while trapping Garibaldi in all those scissors holds. SHEER BRILLIANCE ON THE PART OF BLEARS, AND I WAS GLAD TO SEE HIM WIN. He was also not a particularly cruel heel in that he released the second leg torture hold much more quickly than the first, as he knew that he had won the match. He also did not keep pounding on the defeated Garibaldi once the match was over, and offered his hand in good wishes. Garibaldi knew enough, however, to stay down on the mat after the match so that Blears could stand over him for awhile in triumph. Had he attempted to stand up, Blears probably would have given him a brutal smack down! GOOD WIN FOR THE CALM, COOL AND METHODICAL ENGLISH LORD!

amazing piece of history. this must have been in the waning years of the HLS before they converted into a bowling alley. look at all the empty seats. 1950s equivalent of social distancing

3:19 If pins didn't count, only submissions, Lord Blears could have kept that head scissors on Garibaldi for the rest of the match. 🙂

Yeah, Lord Blears nailed him twice with that sadistic scissors hold. And then he jumped up and down both times so as to inflict more pain and torture. I felt so badly for Leo. 😭😭😭

No way, Lord Blears had the superior strength and the killer instinct. After maiming Garibaldi's leg with the first fall, he smartly focused on the weak spot to quickly bring Garibaldi down yet again, and earned the second fall by brutally punishing the wounded leg even more. Well deserved for the Brutal Brit!
