Unpopular opinion:The fact that Amazon’s Middle-Earth show is confirmed to be woke proves that the truth is simple: They can't create good stories, because good stories are mostly based on tradition and archetypes, that they deny and rebel against them, corrupting them and trying to erase the past and its values and tales. Anyone agree?

Durin’s Bane is just one name given that particular Balrog. Most of the Maiar have multiple names and most of those were given to them by non-Ainur. Even Gothmog as other names (Kalimbo, Kosomot and Kosmoko; with the first of these meaning “savage, barbarian, monster” in Qenya and the last two of both meaning “war-hate” in Qenya).

The word “gaffer” is a contraction of “godfather” with its vowels influenced by the word “grandfather”. It’s generally used outside of Britain to mean “old man”. The informal British usage roughly refers to the leader of a team, a boss, foreman or coach. The word can also refer to a sailor or (in coastal maritime regions) a baby who resides in a house. The feminine version of the word is “gammer” which roughly means “old woman”. It’s also important to note that the word “gaffer” in English also independently refers to the head lighting tech on a movie set or a glassblower. These meanings of the word “gaffer” are etymologically derived from the word “gaff” meaning “hook” or “to hook” (it can be either a noun or a verb) and the ‘-er’ suffix which is added to a verb to make it into a noun denoting a person or thing which performs that action.

The word “hithlain” means “mist thread” in Sindarin. We unfortunately don’t know what exactly it is based on the text of the The Lord of the Rings as Haldir tells Sam he doesn’t have time to explain how it’s made and what it’s made of. An early draft though, which is now collected in the seventh volume of the History of Middle Earth entitled The Treason of Isengard, states that Hithlain is made of fibers from the bark of the mallorn tree. This may or may not have been the final intention of Tolkien as he discarded this statement before the final published draft.

Torech Ungol and Cirith Ungol are different. Cirith Ungol is the entire pass into Mordor, while Torech Ungol is specifically Shelob's Lair within Cirith Ungol. Also if we're being very specific, the 'Dwarven home' that was called a mine would be Khazad-dûm rather than Moria, since it was only called Moria after it had ceased to be their home. Also Harad is almost certainly larger than Rhovanion going by Tolkien's Ambarkanta Map V published in The Shaping of Middle-earth, though that's also going off of regions known to us as readers. Harad is really just a general term for the land south of Gondor, and is probably split up into smaller regions we don't know about (just as 'the Westlands' refers to all of western Middle-earth and Rhûn to the East).

@@satana8157 I looked into it and I think Gwaihir was called "lord of the eagles" at some point, and thorondor was called "king of the eagles". So very similar but the slight difference in use of language may have been purposely used to denote rank. ie gwaihir was lord in the third age, but thorondor was KING of all eagles and birds for all ages. But I could also be totally wrong, I dont know what connotation, if any, tolkien was actually trying to convey, obviously.

Speaking off the top of my head here, but didn't Aragorn also have a brooch given to him by Galadriel? That used to belong to Galadriel's daughter, Celebrian?? Also that question about the evil cat was SO hard, as I think the only place it's mentioned is in Book of Lost Tales pt. 2. And Tolkien really hated cats. I think the only two times he mentions them in his works that I know of depict them as evil. He liked dogs though, what with Huan.

Gaffer is generally a of endearment for a boss or someone so with boss like status. My granddad (from Yorkshire, England) used to use it to describe me and him, ie. Big gaffer (him) and little gaffer (me) when we were doing a job. I don't know if this is just a term used in certain areas of the UK but it's also used in sports like cricket and rugby to describe coaches/managers. I've always assume Sam is using it to describe either his father/grandfather as a term of endearment but also respect.
