The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring. Bilbo gives gifts to Frodo at Rivendell.
Plot :
Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood ), a Hobbit of the "Middle-earth" discovers that a ring bequeathed to him by beloved relative and benefactor Bilbo (Ian Holm) is in reality the "One Ring," a device that will allow its master to manipulate dark powers and enslave the world.
Frodo is charged by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to return the ring to Mount Doom, the evil site where it was forged millennia ago and the only place where it can be destroyed.
Accompanying Frodo is a fellowship of eight others: his Hobbit friends Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd), plus Gandalf; the human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean), Elf archer Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Dwarf soldier Gimli (John Rhys-Davies).
The Fellowship's odyssey takes them through the Mines of Moria and then to the Elvish forest of Lothlórien, where they receive aid from Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Celeborn (Marton Csokas).
In pursuit of the travelers and their ring are Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the Dark Riders under the control of Sauron.

You can tell how much it means to bilbo that Frodo isn’t angry with him in this scene, or even scared, he’s just concerned for his old uncle, and bilbo just needed that reassuring hand on his shoulder

in this moment with the hand on his shoulder Frodo should say smt about being grateful to Bilbo for all those years in which Bilbo cared for him as his adopted parent. It would be great not only becouse such line was in the book in the scene when the two were saying goodbays, but also that Bilbo's "sorry for everything" could be countered by Frodo's gratefulness. :)

You know watching this scene again after re-watching the scene where Thorin originally gave Bilbo the mithril shirt really highlights the parallels in Thorin and Bilbo's personal narratives. They were able to give something so valuable (financially, culturally (in Thorin's case), and in terms of it's ability to keep a person safe) to someone they love and trust...only for it to be ruined a few seconds later by two very similar forms of corruption (the dragon sickness and the One Ring). It really shows them at their very best...and worst.

I like to think that when Bilbo first said: “I’m sorry I’ve brought this upon you, my boy. I’m sorry you must carry this burden...” He was speaking directly to Frodo because he knows just how hard it’s going to be for him to carry the ring and deliver it to it’s ending. He knows Frodo might lose those the people closest to him, all for the sake of doing the right thing... But when Bilbo finally turned around, his expression changed into a more heartbreaking expression, because he himself has lost the ones he came to love during his ultimate adventure in the past. I seriously feel like he wasn’t referring to Frodo when he said: “I’m sorry for everything...” And started crying afterwards... He was referring to Thorin Oakenshield. 😞 As though his very spirit was calling out to his long lost friend, willing for him to know just how sorry he was for everything that had happened...

No it's like what gandalf said, Bilbo spared Smegal's life even when he had the chance to kill him in the gobblin tunnels, unlike Smegal who started his ownership of the ring by killing his cousin/friend Deegal, and later using it for theathing and finding out secrets, and then gets shunned by his own people, Bilbo starts his ownership with mercy, and only uses it to help his friends and maybe a little fun, and while he is not the most popular Hobbit in the shire, mainly among the old people, he is still greatly loved by Frodo and greatly loved Frodo visversa

in the movies it would be possible danger at this stage, but in the book all this scene with "mad Bilbo" was altogether different. It was not Bilbo but Frodo who - at this moment - got a vision of Bilbo as something dark and gollum-like.

Bilbo is crying for so many reasons here. He almost fell to the corruption of the ring, and realizes that Frodo will go through the same struggle. He went on an adventure himself with many companions, and lost some of them along the way, and knows Frodo will too. He also realizes that this may be the last time he ever sees Frodo, like a father who's only son must now go to war.

After watching the Hobbit movies, this scene has such a deeper meaning of Bilbo giving him that shirt. That shirt was given to Bilbo from Thorin out of friendship. And because of that friendship, it helped Frodo later on in his journey. It kept him safe and alive when the troll attempted to kill him. Thorin was not able to save his nephews but the gift of that shirt saved Bilbo’s nephew. Even though Thorin has been gone for years at this point in Bilbo’s life, Thorin helped in a small part by giving Bilbo the shirt then Bilbo giving it to Frodo. It’s so touching and heartwarming to think about. One of my favorite scenes in the film. It makes me cry with how horrible the ring affected Bilbo just by seeing it. Bilbo never meant for anything to happen the way it did for Frodo in his journey. Thanks for uploading.

I realised something that made me appreciate the character of Frodo - something I always had trouble with. He, unlike Bilbo, is nothing more than a child - not longing for responsibility, but for the light-heartedness and cheerfulness of the Shire ("I am not like you, Bilbo"). Still, deep down he knows that he is to become more than that. So when the Ring comes to him, he knows in his heart that it is his duty to destroy it, and his instincts and destiny lead him down a path far greater than himself. But it does not lead him to the same development that we see in Aragorn, for example, which is to mature, to take responsibility, to become a leader. Frodo, on the other hand, remains what he is and always will be: a Hobbit. And so, on the long and endless journey to Mordor, he has to let go of his docile personality because it is incompatible with his duty. Gradually he becomes his duty, nothing more. And so it is a real sacrifice. He is a person with a spirit not necessarily less strong than a hero, but certainly with a less robust soul. But that does not detract from the fact that he did the job. With the help of a friend and nothing more. But had he not been so stubborn as to keep his cruel fate to himself, there would have been no friend to help him, and evil would not have been able to undo itself at the Mount Doom by putting the two corrupted and consumed souls that are Frodo and Smeagol against each other. He is an unconventional hero - the depressed martyr.

Everyone talks about how they’re sad for Bilbo here, meanwhile I was mostly smiling when he gives Frodo Sting and the Mithril shirt, seeing how excited he is that he gets to pass them onto his nephew. Almost like he’s setting up the next generation of adventurer, something he learned to appreciate by the end of his travels with Thorin and Gandalf.

This scene gets me every time, we all have to face our shortcomings and how we have intentionally and unintentionally hurt others through our actions and behaviors. When the weight of his choices finally bares down on Bilbo, what’s Frodo’s response? To turn away? No, instead Frodo loves. His hand on Bilbo’s shoulder is not only a sign of forgiveness but also is saying “I willing carry this burden for you” such a powerful example to us all

As a horror fan that face that "leaks" out of bilbo as he hisses for the ring is absolutely amazing. In a movie within a fantasy setting adding in that slight glimpse into the dark, terrible and horrored nature of Sauron, his ring and the the evils that influence others because of that, really builds anticipation for what they will have to face. The Nazgul also kind of did that but i feel like they should have added more scenes that glimpse into that evil that lies within the ring and how it influences the ring bearer.

It's funny how The Hobbit brought that scene into perspective and many others like it. I know many people say how those prequels didn't capture the magic of the original trilogy and how it was stained by the shortcuts of modern filmmaking but it brings so much depth to the world and the characters to follow. I had the chance to introduce both to my girlfriend and I made her watch the Hobbit trilogy first before LOTR. She really came to like Balin as a friendly avuncular mentor, and I wouldn't spoil his fate for her, such that when that scene in the Fellowship came when Gimli prostrated himself before the tomb of Balin in Moria. She cried and she was angry at first that I didn't tell her, but in that moment she felt what Gimli was feeling, and likely what Bilbo felt when he'd have been told of what happened, such that when Gimli drew his axes and bellowed "Let them come, there is still one Dwarf left in Moria that still draws breath," she stirred with the same passion he did. That's the mark of a great prequel, one where it and the original build off of each other like that. This is but one of many gems honed by their mutual stories.

Bilbo new the burden of being a ring bearer. The mission they have to do and the desire for it to keep. How it was difficult to part with it in time. How even the purest of them can get corrupted. Even the mightiest of them desired for it. Galadriel even desired it

Where did Bilbo think Frodo was going exactly, because he asked him if he still had the ring in Return of the King.

To be fair to Bilbo, he had aged considerably during that time very quickly, his mind properly wasn't all there

A sack cloth is drawn aside, revealing a small sword BILBO: My old sword, Sting (Bilbo picks up the sword and hands it to Frodo. They are in Bilbo's bedchamber in Rivendell) Here, take it, take it. Frodo draws the sword from its sheath, looking at it in awe FRODO: Its so light! BILBO: Yes Yes (Frodo turns it round looking at the blade) Made by the elves you know. The blade glows blue when orcs are close and its times like that my lad, when you have to be extra careful. Here's a pretty thing. (he lifts a shiny metallic shirt from his bed and holds it up for Frodo to see) Mithril! (he holds it in front of Frodo and shakes it) as light as a feather and as hard as dragon scales. Let me see you put it on, go on. Frodo begins to unbutton his shirt revealing the Ring around his neck. Bilbo spots it and takes a breath. Frodo suddenly notices Bilbo staring at it BILBO: (pointing at the Ring) My my old ring. Well I should... very much like to hold it again, one last time. Frodo begins to button his shirt back up again. Suddenly Bilbo, looking wild, makes a swift grab for it. Frodo jumps back looking shocked. Bilbo falls back with his hand to his head looking distraught. BILBO: I'm sorry I brought this upon you my boy (tearfully) I'm sorry that you must carry this burden (he slumps down on his bed and starts to cry). I'm sorry for everything Frodo walks over to him and puts his hand on his shoulder. Bilbo holds Frodo's hand.

In the books Bilbo reacted a lot different. There was wisdom and understanding. That and merryment in the background which went silent when Bilbo saw the ring. Ah... Movies are alright tho, I wouldn't have read the book without them

Coming from a family rife with addiction and generational misery, this scene especially affects me. Bilbo reacts to the ring because he knows it's what he wants, but he stops himself and regrets his desire because he knows the ring is not something he needs, and is actually something that would harm him and his family.

The Way Biblo look at his old rings ..it's turn out to be next Gollum if he touch again . Like a virus enter his physical body of Biblo.... Like a Curse. Curse cannot be broken until the final ending...A Curse cannot be Escape. . .a fate. A destiny...Biblo curse past down on his nephew, Frodo Baggins..... True is Biblo doesn't want Frodo to become like him what he had been through all these year.... especially during the war.......and even doesn't want to lose him as his heir......he felt sorry for him ....but Frodo understand what uncle meant to him....Frodo still forgive him . .
