Stannis wouldn’t have agreed to the ‘you sit the throne and rule everywhere else, while u also let the north have its own independence’. The reason is because, he didn’t want Robb Stark stealing the northern half of his kingdom. Meaning, this alliance would’ve never been struck unfortunately.

Combined with the North they would have put all the Lannister’s heads on pikes and the Tyrells would definitely have stopped backing Renly’s claim if Robb acknowledged Stannis as the rightful King. Mace was always focused on risk vs reward, and he would definitely not risk becoming an enemy to the whole North, Stannis and Joffrey’s forces. (Worth noting that Dorne would likely have even helped Robb and Stannis if they saw an opportunity to take down Tywin.)

@@mozzy1268 At this point Stannis hadn't declared himself. No one knew what he was going to do or what his intentions were. After the Northern and Riverlords declared Rob king there was no going back. Besides Umber is right in that they bowed to the Dragons, not the Stags.

Robb should have declared with Stannis. Stannis would not have granted independence, but neither did Robert to Ned. Independence was a dream that cost Rob his head

To be fair no one knew what Stannis was planning. He hadn't declared himself yet and once Rob was acclaimed king it was too late to go back. What should have happened is Stannis should have sent the letters as soon as he heard Robert was dead. If he had the Starks and the Riverlords would have sided with him

This has already been said a MILLION times. The early seasons were basically putting George R.R. Martin's writings on screen.
