Is the Komatsu D71 the best dozer of it's class ? We put it up against the Midweight Champ - the CAT D6 to find out.
Two great machines, one drivers view test.

komatsu in the 90's bought Hanomag and since then have made huge steps forward probably because they can now draw on the hanomag engineering excellence, they had bulldozers running in the 1920's.

I'm a massive fan of CAT dozers and equipment but I also like to show other operators what's currently out there and then it's down to personal preference, running costs etc. You've got to make your own choices at the end of the day.

What I like is that you are comparing apples to apples ... not a 15 yr old clapped out beast to a brand new shiny machine. The visibility in the Komatsu is astounding. How was the headroom? It looked on camera like your head was above the rear window and into the roof? I, personally, would probably enjoy the Komatsu controls. I was never a fan of the thumb lever on the cat for blade control. It doesn't have a "natural" feel to point my thumb straight up like I'm hitchhiking while holding on to the joystick. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦

I think it was mainly camera angles as I had no problem with headroom with either machine

Yes, Komatsu is on top of with this one. Operators visibility, significant cabin noise reduction, comfort, power and a bigger blade

I was a die hard Cat guy until I had the opportunity to operate the Komatsu D51 and D155, the visibility was second to none and that D155 was a beast, both were very smooth to operate and comfortable for the operator. I still like the Cats but I'm leaning more towards the Komatsu now. I'm really liking their excavators now as well. I was also impressed with the visibility on the 1650 Case dozer as well, it's pretty close to the Komatsu.

I am an oldie..72 years old....We had a family owned sand and gravel company in Prescott, Az. from 1969 to 2003...the equipment shows in Las Vegas in late 60s early 70s we would marvel at the Chinese & Japanese there crawling up, in and out of all Caterpillar equipment photographing every conceivable inch..We owned Cat, Komatsu & Terex loaders, dozers, haul truck,backhoes...And Komatsu are great machines however, the used value market price was not the best and we did for the last 15 own primarily Cat. and had buy back program with them. I also have to give the D71 cab top marks. Theres actually room for your lunch kit and your thermos doesn’t end up under the seat Comfort, huge improvement in visibility and extremely quiet. Even when you are walking past the Komatsu as it’s working, it’s extremely quiet.

As a heavy diesel mechanic I've spent a lot of time in the forestry, on civil construction sites, various mine sites etc then i worked for a heavy hire company which had a large fleet which included Cat D4 - D11 and Komatsu D41 - D375 dozers. We found the Komatsu's to be more popular with our customers due to its pushing power and low centre of gravity. Both brands are good, but the komatsu's reliability and performance is second to none and I would highly recommend. As a mechanic the only thing I would say about dozers in general is they can be hard on the body and very difficult to work on with poor access to the transmission etc often having to remove very heavy seats or even whole cabs to gain access and a lot of the Komatsu models being Japanese were no exception, luckily with some of the later machines now you are able to tilt the cabs for access, a feature that john deere and liebherr adopted a long time ago. HST models are certainly becoming more efficient, reliable and popular. One thing to consider with dozers it is very important to look after and regularly service the rear end, final drives, bull gears etc as they are naturally prone to wear and failure. Really enjoying the content and commentary, keep up the good work mucker, cheers

Hey Craig, have you experienced any steering issues developing around the 16,000 hr mark on Komatsu?? I have not personally experienced that yet myself..That's what I have been told by numerous techs/mechanics..Also that it can be a bit of a nightmare to troubleshoot..I do prefer Komatsu tractors,so this is not a negative comment, rather a legit question..

@@randyleonard4126 Hi Randy, I haven't personally dealt with any steering issue's on the komatsus the hire company i worked for didn't usually do quite that amount of hours before they would on sell them. I do recall some years ago one of the other techs I used to work with having some issues with the transmission and steering on an old D155A-3 which had quite a unique setup withs lots electronics. From memory it needed a new wiring loom as it was plagued with too many intermittent issues. Cheers

Great Vid Kurt I have recently been on a job that had a new Komatsu D61px and a new Cat D5 so like for like in spec. both running on leica Gps for final trimming . My own opinion at the time was the Komatsu would out push the Cat and use less diesel . The Cat on the other hand would be faster at trimming . Even with the poorer vision it seemed to function better with the identical gps system .Myself and the other op were in agreement about this . Out of choice i would operate the komatsu . Keep up the good work and you will really enjoy using a tilty. There is a guy near me who has a tilty on a 4cx ,absolutely amazing piece of kit as he can drive, steer and change direction through the sticks as well as operating the backhoe and tilty.

Did a few days in a D 71 PXI a few mths ago and thought it was an awesome machine, loved the visibility and the hydrostatic drive, and room in the cab. I usually operate a D 7R2 LGP but have spent of time on everything from D 10T to D3, TD 6 to TD 30, but the D 71 would probably be the No 1 machine for me for doing what we mainly do which is residential subdivisions here in QLD. With 40+ years operating dozers of all makes and sizes, the majority of that being on the mighty Cat i feel well qualified to give an Operators opinion on the Komatsu D71 Pxi.. Tru plant had the first two in the country and my backside landed in the second, it was comfortable, quite, powerful and dripping in useful tech.. I was really Impressed on so many levels.. If I was in the market for a dozer of this size the D71 would be my choice followed by the new Liebherr ..

The yrs rolled on and i went backwards ending up on a 41p Komatsu dozer or the dreaded 41 hand clutcher as know one wanted or said they could drive it.The worst dozer i have operated was a D6 R on narrow tracks the best was a D6 H with the tiller steer on wide tracks. We call dozers under the D6 size worm disturbers up this way. Ive been running a new Cat D4 for a year now and before i got it i did try out a PXi51. I totally agree Komatsu has it for cab space and sound. I also noticed on the inside was that a majority of everything was steel not plastic like Cat. But i think Cat has the comfort over Komatsu. Thats one reason why i picked the Cat. They also changed the hood so you can see better looking forward. But Komatsu definitely has the visibility in my eyes. I also liked how where the cab is located didnt think you got beat up as bad. I was fortunate enough to go to work with my dad, Grandad, and uncle on the same site, digging some duck ponds. My dad was on a Cat D8f with manual transmission and donkey start. My uncle was on a D6, and my grandad was on a Komatsu D65. Everyone had a go on the newcomer (Komatsu). All wanted to hate it, but all ended up respecting it. Been running equipment for about 23 yrs I’ve worked on farms, logging, civil and for the past 7yrs I’ve been matting and environmental engineering for utility companies. 4yrs ago my company bought Kamatsu excavator which I was immediately impressed with it will out lift out dig and out perform the cats n Deere excavators we have all day long and for being zero turn it is unbelievably sure footed. It will pick up 4 12”x16’x4’ timber mats weighing around 3300 lbs each and swing around fully stung out n not even begin to lift up which is pretty good for a 40,000lb machine the cats n hitachi machines of equal size wont handle half that load and stay planted and they are mostly normal configuration not zero turn machines. I’m not one to play favorites I love all equipment but it’s hard to overlook the performance

That D6 N is on a 5 H frame . Cat has gone from numbers to letters being the R and T are substantially bigger. We ran the Komatsu 61 exp starting in early 2000s and I was sold. The moldboard will tilt drastically further than the cat. I’m not a fan of high tracks but we have had with them for years. Over the years the Komatsu has held up with less services required. I still prefer a cat motor grader over the Komatsu. Cat has Mitsubishi power 😮sad. I feel Komatsu both in excavators and dozers durability , service, comfort, and power winner. I agree 100% on the controls. They have been clunky and strange since going from linkage. Thank you for the content.

They seem comparable mux. I suppose it comes down to price, servicing costs and dealer back up?

I am all for modern technology today, as you said Cat is a household name in the earthmoving industry but you cannot rest on your laurels. They have to watch it otherwise they will get left behind with the likes of Komatsu, Daewoo etc. Another great video.

There's a lake near Halls Creek in the Kimberley (Western Australia) called Lake Komaterpillar - because the dam that was built to make the lake was constructed by a Komatsu and a Caterpillar! Wonder if that was a Cat v Komatsu too?

He wasnt utilizing the GPS, but that takes it to another level if you use the Komatsu Proactive Dozing Control. Its a really nice feature to help newer operators be productive and limit wear on the machine. Works much better than the autocarry ive ran in a CAT.

Exactly - we made a decision to drive 'old school' to eliminate any 'interference' from the LCi to make a straight comparison

In last 25 years theres a few Cat owners who gone straight to Komatsu and Hitachi as operators love the operate by wire controls and comfort. Komatsu had always had a long relationship with Cummins engine Co wether using American or Japanese made Cummins engines. I believe this is Japanese.

My uncle years ago had a komatsu d155ax dozer he absolutely loved that machine he also had a Cat d9g and a d8 he always said the komatsu would out push and out rip both the Cat dozers

Reading the comments the Komatsu is ahead of th Cat where it counts and that is in the work rate, if the fuel costs are lower too then Cat are going to have to work hard with their next generation of machines to catch up and maybe steal a few ideas to improve that bloody awful frontal and rear visibility. Having the operator constantly craning their neck to one side to avoid that blind spot on their left is an atrocious piece of design work, how that one got past the final prototype stage is a mystery. The only thing I wonder on is the hydraulic fluid, how tolerant that is going to be to prolonged heat and will the service schedule need to be as rigorously adhered too as much as possible to prevent the fluid from breaking down? Other than that I would say on terms of operator comfort and the ability to use the dozer in the most efficient manner the Komatsu is way ahead and as you said it is a game changer.

Enjoyed that Mucker and as Cat man in my plant operating days that Komatsu is the dogs danglies, and again I'm in agreement with you on the difference in the operators controls so its Cat controls onto the big K. 👌
