thank you for giving older games more exposure. I understand that people who joined the hobby in recent years prefer recent trends, but for a oldschool player as myself, I can hardly pick any game released after 2018 that is better than something released previously.

I totally agree. It's hard to compete with something like The Castles of Burgundy or Twilight Struggle or Grand Austria Hotel, stuff like that. I feel bad for new game makers who aren't just making party games.

I am also glad more games are getting reissues (apart from those that are overproduced to grab attention). I hope the market will balance production wise, as it's crazy to have an agenda to release new games every year (from the same designer)

The first time I played this game was a 5-player game. It took absolutely forever, especially since 4 of us had never played before, but it immediately became one of my favorite games. I've only played with all of the expansions, and I don't see a reason to play again without everything included. At higher player counts, the fifth tower is absolutely essential! I couldn't imagine playing a 4-player game without it. Dang, I want to get this to the table again ASAP!!

When I first entered the hobby of modern designer board games in late 2009, the 'heaviest' game I enjoyed was Agricola. In recent years, my enjoyment of heavier games has definitely grown, but my top 10 of 2016 and earlier reflect my previous enjoyment of lighter, medium-ish, games: Agricola Xia Mythotopia The Bloody Inn Black Fleet Castle Merchants Caylus Master Builder WarQuest A Castle For All Seasons

I spent a lot of money and effort to obtain Xia, legend of a drift system only to watch a "Shut Up and SitDdown" review of it, and discovering it is just a more random, slightly rubbish version of Merchants and marauders which i HATED and never played twice. I did play Xia 3 times and then got rid of it. Taught me a great lesson tho, now i research a LOT more before i buy.

I think this game is fun. However, my partner and I played it after already being deeply in love with Grand Austria Hotel by the same designers, which we think is a superior game, so Lorenzo doesn't make it to the table too often. The two games share similar mechanisms, and both are quite tight and cutthroat, but GAH has more theme, which puts it over the top. Would love to see you two play it. It's great at two players. Thanks for the video. It makes me want to play LIM again (except our table is currently swallowed up by Lisboa). :)

Ahh Monique isn’t a fan of GAH because the dice can limit your ability to take the actions you want. I like it, but think I may like Lorenzo over GAH. It’s been about a year since I last played it, now I want to haha.

Great! Lorenzo is in my top 4 games ever! The expansion is great as well; it loosens up higher player count a bit with a 5th tower (can be used at any player count btw). the zig-zag balance of strategy and tactics in this one is so fun. add the expansion asymmetric family powers on top of this game and it stays fresh for a long time.

Great play-thru and review as always! Since you like the tightness and tension in this game you might also like the game punishing aspects of World without End. The pain is okay because everyone suffers, so doesn't feel arbitrary. 😀 Increasing limits on action options as each era progresses before resetting for the next era leads to a nice tension and hard choices. Bonus is that it plays quickly. Not sure how easy it is to get hold of that older game, but it is one I love to keep going back to.

Great video, thanks! The houses of reniassance adds another tower which helps with the tightness and variety, like it a lot, we always play with it. The pazzi conspiracy i do not like, it adds more player interaction, but sometimes in a take that kind of way. Also it adds a lot of setup time for what it is.

Great game, ill be keeping it for a while as well. The 5th tower added in the expansion loosens things up a bit, and is great in 3p and above games. My only problem with this game are that the 1x purple worker pieces are nearly the exact same size as the larger 5x purple worker pieces, and it's hard to tell them apart without having both sizes side by side. Also, the 4 leader cards you get at the beginning of the game only have iconography, to make the game language independent, and while there is an index telling you what these cards do, they are not in alphabetical order AND are split up between 2 or 3 rulebooks. So you and all other players have to go through a maze of Italian names to find the 4 you are using this game, and when you forget what one of them does, its back to the Maze for another 3 minutes.

At 17:48, when Monique takes the yellow card as a result of the effect of her character card: I thought it wasn't possible to boost card effects with workers? In other words: isn't it only possible to use servants when placing a worker to boost that worker's dice value?
@stephenerdel5441

Omg. This is my all time favourite game. So clean. Despite it being my favourite game i strongly reccomend you DON'T cover the second 'running your engine' space as it suggests for 2p. The 3 pip penalty is punishment enough, and it can just become a race to that spot each round otherwise.

Getting some Castles of Burgundy vibes from this one. Also I wouldnt call anything after ~2007 "older" games. Lots of very relevant and amazing games made in 2016 and before. Great Western Trail, Pandemic, Castles of burgundy, 7 Wonders Duel, Brass, Feast for Odin, Concordia, Viticulture, Caverna/Agricola, Power Grid, Eclipse, Robinson Crusoe, Dominant Species, and the list goes on... personally I think modern era of board games started somewhere around 2005 and we are still in it. Most new games rehash mechanics invented in the last 20 years anyways.
