Loretta Lynn presents the Living Legend Award in 1997. But the recipient, the great Charley Pride, doesn't expect to be the lucky one. The surprise at knowing his name is reflected on his face.
Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. During the peak years of his recording career (1966-1987), he had 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971.
Pride is one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.

Loretta was told not to stand too close,not to to touch Charlie Pride but she didn't listen in her own way gave a middle finger to the establishment without giving a actual middle finger by hugging and kissing Charlie Pride on the lips. We need to honor women of such strong moral convictions. We all should follow Loretta's example.

She was told that when he presented an award for best female singer to her in 1972--not this time. However, the sentiment is the same--she didn't give a rat's hind quarters what people thought. He was her friend and she loved him.

I was born in Helena, Montana. When I was a toddler, (about 60 years ago) my mom and dad used to go dancing at a bar called the "Silver Spur." Their favorite attraction there was Charlie Pride. Charlie worked at a lead smelter plant, played baseball for that company's team, and played country music in the juke joints. My mom was a cashier at the Safeway grocery store, and Mrs. Pride always waited in line to go through my mom's checkout. They became friends, and had great conversations together. When Charlie made the big time, we would watch him on T.V. Even though he and his family lived in Montana for only a few years, my mom and dad had this attitude that "Local home boy does good!" They were very proud of him, and talked about him and his family all through the years.

Barriers? They told the story where he was singing locally, a country singer encouraged him to go to Nashville, he did, and then he was signing with RCA records... he was treated like anybody else with an elite singing voice. They didn't care that he was black.

@dmoor10 10 ай бұрын
@@jeffwvu4602 You're full of crap. he was treated terribly because he was black. he wasn't allowed to sing certain songs if they mentioned blonde hair or blue eyes because they alluded to white women, certain clubs would cancel his bookings when he showed up and they found out he was black. Loretta even wrote about being told not to touch him when she presented him with an award in the 70s

@@jeffwvu4602Maybe RCA records did, because they only see one color - green. But then the man had to then go out and play concerts, and deal with bookers, promoters, venue owners, radio people, magazine and newspaper people, on and on. Only someone who has never experienced anything like that would even fathom that "there were no barriers". It's like Branch Rickey wanted Jackie Robinson, and he made a lot of money playing baseball, and he also suffered a long the way.

My mama and daddy got to see him in concert before I was born. They said he stayed after and signed autographs until security told him he had to leave or go to jail. "Kiss An Angel Good Morning" is a song that I live by because everyday I am at home I kiss my wife and say good morning.

Charley Pride broke down color barriers with his voice alone. Alot of people at the time believed him to be a White country singer, imagine their surprise after learning and singing his songs on the radio then finding out later he was in fact a black man. Content of his character rather than his skin color proved to be the key to his success and the softening of racial bias during the turbulent times then. I miss shows like that where truly humble people are honored and accept their accolades with dignity. Thanks for posting this video.😎👌🇺🇲

I had the pleasure of seeing Charlie Pride on stage in Sydney Australia in the 1990s and he was a great entertainer. He always had time for his fans and no matter how large the audience he would set himself on stage after his show and he would not leave until all members of the audience, who wanted to have his autograph or just chat with him had left the theatre. He was a true gentleman. I was not really a great fan of Charlie but his records didn't do him justice, you had to see him on stage live to see just how good he was, he was fantastic as an entertainer and singer. I became a fan ever since. RIP Charlie, the industry lost a true gentleman.

Charlie Pride has always been my favorite country artist all time, I grew up listening to his songs and know them all by heart. My mom and dad took me to see him perform in 1973, I was 10 years old, we lived in El Paso Texas, his opening act was a little known newcomer named Ronnie Milsap, I’ll never forget that night, I think the tickets were like $8-$10 back then, amazing by todays standards. I miss Charlie Pride but I so look forward to meeting him one day up yonder.

I remember when I first heard "Crystal Chandeliers" and I was stunned by how beautiful and heartfelt the song was/is, and always will be, and how this country singer did such a wonderful job. Then I found out some people loved the song but hated him because he is black and I lost it!, I was mad as hell!
