We tested so many hard drives before finding this video. Changing the power supply cable totally fixed our problem. We found an old router that had the same power specs: 100-240V 50-60Hz 12v 2.0A. We tried a 1.5A cord, but it didn't work. Thank you so much for the video.

Back to basics. Many unsuccessful attempts at trying to sove this issue. Very glad that I came across your video. I hooked up the DVR to a large 12V power upply that I use for the cameras. Works just fine now. Amazing no one else had suggested this. Thank you for this info and a great video

Thank you for this video!! I have spent over an hour on the phone with Lorex Tech support trying to figure out why my NVR wouldn't recognize the HDD and not once did they suggest replacing the power supply. I tried everything their tech support suggested to no avail. I saw your video, and not believing it could be so simple, tried it anyway, and yup, that was the problem. Thank you for providing this simple solution!!!!

Wow! I'm a computer tech and never would of thought of this. I tried many different hard drives, using different formats (FAT, NTFS, exFAT) still not detecting the hard drive, even bought a 'green' drive thinking that would do it. Saw your video and used an old modem power supply and boom ! worked ! Appreciate this video man ! !!! God bless

Omg, thanks a million. You just save me 6 hours of unnecessary trouble shooting. About 3 weeks ago when I would bring my cameras up away from home on my iPhone. I would see a message "No Card" pop up on my phone as I switch from one camera to the next. A week later I tried to bring my cameras up on my phone "Connect Fail" would show up. Today 01/02/2019, I start trouble shooting my Lorex DVR, I knew it was something to do with the DVR. I was so frustrated thinking "Now I have to sent my DVR back to Lorex, which will take 2 weeks or more".Good I keep extra supply cords around. Thank you, thank you, thank you, so,so,so,so,so much, & once again THANK YOU.

I replaced my old DVR with a new one and thought "I'll just use all the cables from the old one so I don't have to re-fish the wires through my cabinet". "No Disc" error appeared in the corner of my monitor and no recording was taking place. Struggled to figure out what the problem was and then I found this video. Plugged the adapter in that came with it and now it detects the Hard drive and it started recording. Thanks for this you just saved me a call to Customer Service.

my DVR hasn't been working for the past 2 weeks now, I ordered a new Hard drive, and before installing it today, thought I would look up if my DVR still had warranty on google, and am I glad I found this video as the first link. Found a 12V 3.0Amp cable and everything began to work. Previously is stopped recording and beeping, then it completely stopped powering on and only beeped. Swapping the cable solved the issue, Thanks!!!

I saved you guys the cursing, as I thought my hard drive had failed too, and went to the trouble of swapping it out only to get the same error. Then the light bulb went on and I swapped the power supply. Walla, booted up. So I put the original drive back in and fired up the camera and made the video. I didn't initially shoot the hard drive swap because where the DVR was located it isn't accessible with the camera. It is in a security cabinet, and I actually removed it, and just had it balanced on a little table to shoot. So it may seem that I just "knew" the adapter was bad. Not true, I had worked on this for quite some time before I clued in, because this unit was not that old, I didn't think the adapter would fail that fast. But this isn't the only trouble I have had with this. The fan on the CPU also failed first, and caused it to overheat and start rebooting, so I stuffed a new larger fan from a laptop in there.

Thanks for the video. Mine did the same thing today. Luckily, I found your video and decided to try that first. Went to Radio Shack with the old power supply and asked for a new one. The guy tested the old one and said it was fine. I decided to try a new one anyway (could always return it if the problem persisted). Came home, plugged the new power supply in and everything is working normally again.
@12voltvids

What happens is filter capacitors on the secondary side dry up and the ESR goes up. Under no load the voltage will appear normal, but under load the voltage fluctuates and that causes the rebooting issue.

It took me awhile to find it too. I checked a bunch of stuff before stumbling onto the power supply. It's a very common failure of all electronics. We have them fail on pvrs at work all the time. Many techs just swap the Pvr and not the power supply because it is in behind a cabinet or something and they are too lazy to fish the power cord. Then the new one acts up and I get dispatched to an angry customer that tells me that the box has already been replaced. First thing i ask. Did the previous tech change the power brick. Usually the answer is "I don't know" because especially now with covid we don't want customers hanging around too close while we work on the house. I pull the power brick, find it is usually hot as a firecracker and covered in dust confirming that it wasn't changed last week. Swap the power supply and guess what, problem solved.

Thank you for this. Changing adapters worked for me. When I disconnected the existing one it was extremely hot and after letting it cool tried it with another device and it didn’t work properly either so that pretty much confirmed a faulty adapter. My internal fan also went bad last year and the unit was overheating and shutting down. After I changed it out, all good. Not sure how much longer this unit is going to last though so thankfully they are much less expensive today than 4 years ago.

@12voltvids

Sure you could replace it with an SSD and you will be replacing it every year or sooner as SSD are not designed for constant write cycle. They have limited writes and after that the memory cells start to fail and data vanishes. You have no idea how many SD cards i have burned through using them with security cameras. One day they work and the next they are blank.

Are sure you had the correct power supply? It looked like a 2Amp. I have a similar situation with several Q-See DVRs. They were never used but 8 yrs old. I assumed the large power adaptors (3.5 or 4Amp) were for the DVR and the small one like yours was for the cameras pigtail splitter for cam & IR emitters. I just looked at the manual and it shows both supplies are the larger brick type, which is not what shipped. After a few days of use, the HDD Alarm went off, (no drive). I swapped out the DVR and the drive wasn't detected on a DVR I had been testing with a different power supply. Like others have noticed, It seemed like the supply worked enough to run cameras and DVR electronics but not spin up the drive. BTW, Q-See DVRs for either 4 or 16 cameras were shipped with 3.5-4.0 Amp Power Supplies, and you appear to be using a 2 Amp.

My Lorex adaptor output says 48.0V -2.0A, 96.0 W. Can I use a 12 V on this one? Or does it have to be a 48.0 volt? I figured out the amp can be higher. Does it matter on the watts? Trying to figure out what size adaptor to get. Thank you.

You need to use the correct voltage. The input voltage will be printed on the device

Okay so it is the input voltage I need to go by. Not the output? Thank you for the quick reply.

@@Melissa-ve2zw you need to select a power supply that is the same as the original. On the device you are powering will specify what is required. If the device requires 48 volts you need a 48v power supply. That is a odd voltage. That's what equipment designed for telecom runs at as the battery systems are all 48v. Most devices will operate on one of some pretty standard DC voltage. 12, 19, 24, 48. 19 is real common for laptops. The output voltage of the power needs to be the same as the input of the device unless the device is a multi voltage device which will clearly be labeled on the device.

@@12voltvids the input says 100-240V, 50/60 Hz and 1.5 A. The output says 48.0V , 2.0 A and 96.0W and this is for a Lorex 4K . Sorry so just to clarify I need all the volts for input and output to match exactly?

Thanks 12voltvids guy! Stupid DVR woke me up this morning at 7 AM, beeping with this same HDD error. You saved me from spending a ton of money on a new hard drive that wouldn't have helped anyway. And, to top it off, I just happened to have had an old power supply laying around that got me back up in a few minutes and cost me nothing.

Mine has failed twice (the power brick that is) and the camera power brick has failed too. This is the weak link on these units. Mine runs 24/7 and the only other thing that has failed is the fan on the processor on the DVR.

You just learned the most important part of troouobleshooting. If a device uses an external power supply brick or wall wart, swap that first before doing anything else because 90% of the time that is the fault. Now excuse me while I go over to a friends place and pull his head out of his ass. (and hand him a new wall wart for his DSL modem)

do you have to use the same amp power supply or can you go a little larger?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
As long as it is 12 volts you can go higher in current. The DVR will only draw what it needs. If you undersize the power supply you will burn it out.

I have H.264 dvr, suddenly this answer( device is not on line) when using phone and there is a beep every 2 minutes, noticed no light on HDD. Could it be the adapter error?

Salwa Hussein Possibly or someone might be trying to hack your system. Do not ever take an "update " as that is how they get in and turn your DVR into bitcoin miner. Factory reset and choose a hard password. Will keep the hackers at bay. The power supply is likely causing your issue. My DVR recently had someone trying to break in. I just haven't done the video yet.

@@12voltvids Thank you for help. Did not change factory setting yet , as have not screen. Using Mobile and Internet to see outdoor camera only. Very poor usage! But I always suspect that at the same time every morning there is a beep like if someone is there. Any way now I cannot even open the camera. Will try to change the adapter. Appreciate your kind answer.

Can anyone explain why if the power adapter is already giving power, by switching it, the hard drive will work? Thanks
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
The power supply might be giving the correct voltage but not the correct current. So when the hard drive ties to start the power supply can not supply enough current and the voltage falls.

Yes, this video saved me a ton of headache and $. It worked for me as well. How did you know to check power supply? Agree they fail, but system was still powered. I assume similar to camera failure mechanism; IR stops working when PS fails, but camera functions. Great Post!

It actually worked. thanks for the video. I took one of the power cords for the cameras ( the one that splits into multiple power cords) and used it to power the unit. the original adapter was 12volt DC 2.0Amp . and the camera power cables adapter is 12Volt DC 2.5 Amp. So The 2.5A is the maximum current it can supply but it works fine delivering less current....
