Lori Vallow Daybell’s cousin who starred in ‘Doomsday Preppers’ sheds new light on her beliefs

IDAHO FALLS - One of Lori Vallow Daybell’s close cousins is shedding new light on her doomsday beliefs and the influence Chad Daybell may have had on her in the months leading up to the deaths of her children.
Braxton Southwick lived within an hour of Lori’s family growing up and is similar in age to her and her brother Adam. He tells EastIdahoNews.com they were “as close as cousins could be” but really connected in 2001.
“I’ve always kind of been a prepper but really got into it after the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” Southwick says. “I’d say Lori started prepping a lot around the same time. We talked a lot about prepping. I’d call her and say, ‘Hey, have you read this book?’ and she’d call me, ‘Have you read this book?’ We kind of fueled the fire for passion and prepping with each other.”
Southwick appeared on two seasons of hit National Geographic show ‘Doomsday Preppers,’ has been on multiple television programs discussing prepping and has traveled to several states speaking about preparing for the end of times.
He says Lori wasn’t into collecting food storage, fuel or physical items because she moved a lot but focused on spiritual, religious preparation. Southwick recalls visiting Hawaii with his wife in 2017 and staying at Lori and Charles Vallow’s home for a week.
“Pretty much all we did was talk about prepping the whole time - books, our feelings about things - it was just something fun for us,” Southwick explains. “It was huge in her life to be a part of it and experience it firsthand. That was what she really, really wanted.”
Around the time of their visit, Lori became obsessed with ‘Visions of Glory,’ a book detailing near-death experiences and visions of a man as told to the author. It describes a plague, floods, earthquakes and the gathering of 144,000 righteous people ahead of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
“I thought it was a phenomenal book…but you just have to keep it vanilla. What she did was take it to the way extreme and she (believed) a lot of stuff out of that book. We talked about that book all the time and I think I’m the one that called her and told her about it when it first came out,” Southwick says.
When Kauai police served Lori with an order to produce her children in January 2020, body camera footage shows her lying next to a swimming pool with a ‘Visions of Glory’ book on her chair. Chad Daybell is in a chair next to her.

I applaud physical preppers preparing for inforseeable word events and question religious preppers…they always come across as unbalanced. True preppers know that the plan should always be “not to tell people the plan”.

Outsiders don't realize it isn't a Chrisian religion. There's a lot of pressure to earn advancement. Consequently there have been and always will be people who fall into the "hyperreligious" category. Those familiar with the Christian Bible or the TANAKH aren't aware that the LDS church founder cut out the important parts and replaced them with his marketing plan. After 50 years of heavy indoctrination Lori has reason to believe she is Jewish, male and a virgin(144,000.) Her final statement about "he who is without sin..." was a reference to what she believes about herself and Chad(gods.) There are hundreds and maybe thousands more just like them. Watch where you step because there are rabbit holes.

Oh okay thanks for that. Something else came to mind. I don’t know where I heard this, but some podcast or interview stated that there is a concentrated group of preppers in Rexburg ID that have land and are building small homes (about the size of a couple tents) for the second coming - and that there are large stockpiles of guns. Am I correct on this? I cannot remember all the details or if I’m wrong.

Like it’s selfish and also very full of himself to think he would even be chosen. People like him live for the fantasy of being special and unique. It’s just easier for these people to just believe this about themselves than actually be special and unique. That would require effort.

Sadly, there really are those who feel that way if only temporarily. My own husband (two years after final discharge) made the statement to me, "I was trained to kill and never killed anyone." It was absolutely blood-chilling!!! If he had said that before we married, there would have been no marriage! He was such a quiet person, it was quite shocking he said such a thing.

He’s “sad for her and their family” but doesn’t say he is horrified about her actions . Everytime I ear people say "she did not want her kids to die" then I remember the FACT they were not only murdered, but tortured, mutilated, shot, poisioned, smothered and buried in a pet cemetary and fire pit, I just can not accept it was a mercy killing. In everyone murdered or even attempted murder it was somuch more then a way of escape from the "Second Coming of Jesus Christ". My friends dad was a “prepper”. She could never go on vacations… they couldn’t do anything that wasn’t envolved in “prepping”. Her dad died in hospice at 90. He cried and apologized for NEVER being in the present moment with her… he was in such regret for always “prepping” for the end… now that it was the end, but NOT the “end” he was expecting… human beings are terrified of NOW…. kind of funny in a way… these people are nuts…..

Lori was NOT a phenomenal mother. She wasn’t even a good mother. She portrayed that image in front of people, but Lori has always been vindictive and retaliatory. That’s why everyone coward to her and no one would object to her. So I believe wholeheartedly that her kids loved her very much and wanted to see the good in her that everyone else saw, but they KNEW that if they displeased her that there would be hell to pay. And there are enough firsthand stories out there that prove this. Also, Lori may have been the most fun and amazing to hang out with, but that was ONLY IF she was getting her way. Chad DID NOT change Lori. Period!!’

Exactly. Just my opinion but i wholeheartedly believe she poisoned Tylee with over processed foods hence why Colby and Tylee were chunky kids, that is a sign of a lazy parent. When she saw the attention she kept going. Joe Ryan never molested anyone. Lori groomed Colby and Tylee to say Joe molested them. Then it was Lori's idea to adopt JJ. Special needs kids moms are looked up to. Plus she knew he would end up on SSI one day. Lori was happy go lucky bc as a child she had it made with trips to Hawaii, disney, knotts berry farm, a home with a pool. She constantly remarried and left disaster in her wake bc the relationship didn't serve her anymore. Colby's birth father is the lucky one bc he got out alive without dealing with custody or child support. Joe was run thru the mill. Justin Lum interviewed Joe's custody attorney who Joe lived with for a short time. He said Joe was cleared of anything about molestation. But bc when Lori is done with you and can't be bothered to share custody she made it as difficult as possible. Hence she had Alex tase Joe and eventually kill him. That is her first kill for money scheme. Joe lay dead in his apartment days before she alerted police he had not shown up for visits. She then had him cremated, then told Joe's sister Annie Cushing who he was estranged from weeks later to come get his ashes and belongings. She said all his stuff smelled of decompositio. I also think Alex had sex with Lori when she was young. Lori made him do her bidding so she would not ever tell. They were over sexualized from Janis and Barry talking about thier sex life in front of thier children. Megan (Lori's cousin same age interviewed by HIDDEN true crime)said after church the kids could hear the parents screwing loudly. That whole family is sick af. Adam and Rex may be the only sane ones. Adam admits to barely going to church. That LDS is way out there. But i think all religions were invented to control the masses. This guy is just as crazy with the prepper nonsense. Can you imagine being married to a nut like this who spends all the extra money in what if fairy tales when they could travel or pay off the mortgage or help people less fortunate which is what Jesus would do. I hope this interview tour he is on for clout makes him realize how stupid he and his beliefs are but just like Lori he is a lost cause. There is a huge difference between common sense and fear based mental state. You not prepping for your children or kill them to keep them from heartaches. YOU ARE PREPARING YOUR CHILDREN TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH ANYTHING THAT LIFE THROWS AT THEM. That's your job as parent. Show them values by your own life and action. Give them opportunity to learn and be able to do something with their life. Teach them to be compassionate. And be there when they fail, fall or have other difficulties. Suppor them to become great people. Not killing them, controlling them, force your ideas and choices on them. Don't preach about Jesus, live your life in his spirit. And that is not gun and prepping. It is love and compassion.

I agree with so many here - Lori killed her children in the cruelest, most horrific way & there's no way that was to "save" them from coming difficulties. Charles stated before he died that she dumped JJ on him for months and told him she didn't care what happened to him anymore. ** Everyone is missing this. She treated Colby more like a boyfriend (Colbys words in an interview). Narcissistic personalities Need a Lot of Attention and Approval Always.. Colby moving out, getting married, having a baby she was jealous and felt as though he Left 'Her' personally, like a break up feels.. Look what a good mother I am.. look at my beautiful hair. etc etc etc. She found attention from someone who 'gets her', and has the same beliefs in doomsday prepping. He is clapping at everything she says and does and the rest of her life seems like old dark nothingness. Her husband Charles is a good person but doesn't share her beliefs. She can't talk to him and get all excited together about it. So she just found a boyfriend. Someone to fill the narcissistic need for outside approval and attention. In her mind, everyone broke up with her, only cared about their own lives and no one cared about me, me,me (lori).. Except Chad,, He could see her.. she is not invisible.. someone sees her.. Everyone is thinking it is all the prepper stuff, that's the result.. I think she first snapped when Colby got married and it was on from there.. The worst break up of her life. Colby said in the interview that she didn't even stay til the end of the reception or something to that nature.. and didn't even go to the baby shower o to the birth of his baby... she was really mad at Colby inside.. this is much deeper than just getting overexcited about doomsday.. (although it turned into that)

Yeah I think she was narcissistic all along as well. My thoughts is that she grew up in a family where image is so important. A father that said they were in the top 5% as in the whole package in looks and intelligence. I see lori trying to live up to that top tier mother and wife. I suspect she had Münchausen syndrome by proxy. Not for certain but Tylee was in hospital all the time for stomach problems where nothing seemed to be identified as the cause. Lori mentions in her statement how bad it was for her to have a child that was sick and always there in the hospital by her bed. I have a feeling lori got attention every time Tylee was sick. What if she was purposely making her sick? And adopting baby jj who had special needs just made her look like a saint. Even when you look at Charles and Lori’s lifestyle. They didn’t have a mortgage they rented and they rented these fabulous looking homes. It’s all image based. I think if she got away with getting the life insurance from Charles I think she wouldn’t of killed the children. I think that the life insurance from Charles and Tammy as well as the assets from Tammy and chad was enough for them. But then when she didn’t get charles money then she looked to her children. She received $1000 a week for caring for jj and she redirected tylees money into her account. Also Brandon’s life insurance was another way of receiving money. That was 1 million and melani was in their eyes their daughter from another life. They would of all pooled their money. Started this cult collecting followers that believed they were better than the top 5% of the population they were the top 2 people in the world. Both gods and were responsible for choosing the 144,000 to be saved. Ridiculous fancy but they did find people that followed them and believed they were special. Such a shallow life they aspired to have. To live a luxury life without having to work with followers believing they were gods.

@@samsmom400 The reason they say that, is because we tend to attract people that have the same issues that our parents have. For example, if you were molested as a child, you tend to attract people who molest into your life. Your kids get molest, your family members have issues like that also. Or if you were physically abused, you attract the same into your life. I call it generational sin. So, look around your family and see what everyone is dealing with or have dealt with. Abusive people can often be very good at hiding it and lots of times, the victims can't remember the abuse, but their life shows it, by who they attract into their life.

Actually YOU have a lot of sense. All this about the 144000 and Christs return is UTTER MANIPULATION. Yes there is prophecy about end times in the Bible. For one thing it speaks of Israel becoming a nation again like it did in 1948. It also speaks of increased knowledge( internet and AI ), it speaks of wars and rumors of wars, it mentions changes in climate( yes really, but there is no need to go bananas over it) the Bible mentions plague and pestilence ( famines and COVID) but it tells us to be ready to meet God. We do NOT need to prepare a spiritual army,(God will bring about the the 144000 when He wants and when he wants)or prep, which means hoarding. I did find it a bit strange exactly how the children died or who did the actual deeds but maybe it’s just too horrific to talk about at court. Just wait till Chads trial. By then people will be either tired of it or a lot of horrendous stuff will hit the fan. The harsher the penalty the more these people feel they are being persecuted and will sacrifice everything,even children in hope of earning more brownie points with God. There were people who sacrificed children to Baal, some ancient god. It’s called Child Sacrifice and that’s exactly what Chad, Alex and Lori did. They crossed a moral and spiritual line and allowed Satan to control their minds. That’s PURE EVIL. A lot like snake charmers in India. Witch doctors, Satan worshippers ( don’t kid yourself,lots of ‘em in USA), drugs and cartels, lgbtq crap (men shall become lovers of themselves) and general lack of respect and worship of God is mentioned in the Bible but people think it’s ok to add or subtract anything they wish from Gods word and the Bible it says we are NOT to do that. I guess the Mormons conveniently overlooked that. Oh yes the the Bible also says that in the last days many will be deceived. All we need to do is ask God to forgive us our sins, live according to his instructions in the BIBLE, and we have assurance of being in heaven. It’s our CHOICE. Good or evil. God or Satan. No need for a ton of man made garbage.

Tylee didn't like Chad and Chad didn't like Tylee! And as far as little JJ, well, he was totally tying her life and future life with Chad down! Lori wasn't going to let him go to anyone else because in her mind that would be failure!.. and Lori in her sick mind doesn't fail! Many years of her putting on a charade of being a perfect happy mother caught up with her! Her sickness didn't happen suddenly she was hiding a lot for a long time. These people are nothing like the LDS people I know. My many LDS friends are all still on their first husbands, and they make quilts and play the piano and laugh a lot. They all have one year's worth of groceries put away for their families, in case of emergency, whether it is a natural disaster, or the End Times. They keep their houses clean and are thrifty.

Also Satan can disguise himself to people dabbling in this stuff. The Bible says he can appear like an angel of light and that’s why Lori thought she was seeing Jesus Christ in the temple. How come no one else at the temple noticed this??? What Chad and Lorie did was CHILD SACRIFICE. In the Old Testament of the Bible there were very wicked people who did this and God sent down fire from heaven to destroy them. This religion is just as evil in the end as a snake charmer in India. I think you should find Christian friends. God loves you and has sent Jesus to die for our sins. If we ask God to forgive us our sins and study his word he will take care of our souls.
