Filmed at Hilton Park services M6 on Sunday 11 December 1994. Those were the days Sunday mornings busy with the Irish trucks stopping for a break. Plenty of Scania 3 series here, short clip at the Hollies Cafe for good measure. Part 2 to follow as the lorries head off southbound. Enjoy!!!

I remember serving my apprenticeship on trucks like these. Manual boxes , mechanical fuel injection , everything hard wired , a throttle cable!! Actually felt like you were driving these trucks unlike today. Hardly any overseas companies or drivers. Just think....back when this was filmed everyone would have been complaining how the job wasn't the same as it used to be , imagine if we had known the state of the haulage industry now compared to back then , Being a truck driver is a skilled job , but more so back then........We have all the latest technology and as someone said...LED light bars etc etc haha......but sadly the industry has gone backwards which is a great shame. This is a brilliant piece of video. People actually changing gear manually , and still getting better fuel economy than we have now!!!! No speed limiters , trackers or any CPC nonsense. You would almost think that drivers back then were actually trusted to go and do their job autonomosly rather than the micro managed constantly monitored crap we have today. Is it any wander some drivers don't care!!!!....Great video!!!!

Fantastic old memories when the Scania V8 really sounded like a proper V8 with the roar it made and I can remember it vividly as a 13-15 year old boy catching the Saturday early evening or late night ferry crossing from Larne-Stranraer and then the 500’ miles long punch all through the night/morning down to Dover for the Sunday lunchtime or afternoon ferry crossing to Calais mainly and then travelling mainly to Italy with my late dad. I always remember Sandbach services on the M6 was just as busy on a Sunday morning too with loads of the Irish trucks heading south to Dover? Great days gone by and never to be forgotten! RIP Dad XX

Every services was always full of Irish trucks heading for Dover on a Sunday. Could never get parked. Then off we would go only to be overtaken by them all doing 90. Everything done at foot to the floor speed. Take me hat off to these boys they knew how how to get from a to b quickly

@@garethifan1034 the level of professionalism seems to have slid so much over the last two decades. Having fifteen spots on the front of your motor and a million LED marker light's is now more important than knowing how to handle rope! The standard of drivers I witness on a daily basis is shocking, don't get me wrong, there's many "Drivers" still around but, it feels like the vast majority just want to whack the truck in 'D' and switch themselves off for the day. Would love to see how the vast majority of new drivers were to get on with a twin Eaton splitter etc. Still, I've been driving artics for ten years and I'm still as in love with the road as I was when I was 4years old in an old SK powerliner.

My late dad drove the 141, 142 & 143 for Northern Irish hauliers back through the very late 1970’s until the mid 1990’s and he always said that his 143 450’ was the best truck that he ever drove for sheer pulling power but the 141 375’ & 142 420’ ran the 143 very close for pulling power on the long drive down on a Saturday night through to Sunday afternoon from Stranraer to Dover starting off on the dreaded A75 from Stranraer lol

Seeing how different the old Volvo F12 and 16 looked compared to the new FH12 and 16.. And how there was still plenty of Fodens and ERF's in use.. No complicated electrics, no cheap plastics.. just good solid built trucks..

well not really, its much the same really. You can pick out the Brit (or NI) trucks as they are 3 axle tractors. All other EU countries allow 40 Tonnes on 5 axles so they use 4 X 2 with higher drive axle weights. Its only the UK that allows 44 Tonnes on 6 axles generally (although ISO containers run at 44 Tonnes in the EU) but with lower axle weights hence the 6 X 2 tractors.

No wonder the 143 was a market leader every other truvk u seen back tben was a 143 450 most of the irish lads had them and nearly all the guys from aberdeenshire had one or more in their fleet . Even charles alexander the aberdeen company owned by tdg had a pair of 143 400s on the fish work . . Nice to see bains of tarves aberdeenshires old 143 all these lads from this era knew how to work . 100 hr week no problem no lightbars or fancy stuff on these working machines . Love hearing the old v8 go up through the box these 143s werent cheap . I mind around this time a friend pricing one from reliable vehichles in aberdeen fae mr mchardy the sales lad . Hundred grand and change for a tag axle 143 450 on steel springs air was another 2.500 grand so he ended up getting a p cabbed 113 360 tag on air he still was miffed that the boss wouldnt buy a 143 as it was too dear

I see the late Isobel Millar in Joe Millars centurion 500 Scania. I had a couple of 143's pulling for the famous Ross Reid of Interland Transport fame in those days. The crack was good there were no speed limiters men were men and Scanis's were real trucks then.

Great days for me as an owner operator - Scania 113.360 Topline 6 x 2 tag axle running fridges to Spain. The Irish lads were a hard working bunch, mad as a box of frogs but would never leave you in trouble. We will pass over the multiple tacho discs but hey they had a long way to go. I went on to operate 5 trucks of my own (MAN 22.422 Roadhaus and an FH12). So sad that while we all just traded and drove trucks and had a few laughs along the way in the EEC we now have the EU giving us a hard time because we wish to leave and sadly the useful idiot in Dublin Veradkar is leading the way. Every one of these trucks and every one since and until a couple of years ago never paid a penny road tax or bought any diesel here but if the EU keeps up this attitude we will leave with no deal and the Irish lads won't be using British roads to get to the EU. Politics eh?

@@damienleonard7251 Oh so you know my facts are untrue? Interesting... well I have just watched it again and most were Irish but still what do I know. A couple of Cloggies and some UK lads working for Interland on port to port transfers. Basically if they were 4 X 2 they were Irish or foreign. The McCullas were NI trucks and 6 X 2. I guess you didn't read the part where I was referring to Irish trucks 2nd paragraph 3rd line down? And back in the day no one filled up in UK on the way back. If we came from Germany we filled up at Luxembourg or from Italy and Spain we filled up in Calais supermarkets for cash. Basically half the price of UK diesel. Of course there were always the tilt trailers with false fronts filled with red diesel.

@@1chish what do you deem to be an Irish truck.. ?. I was there the day it was filmed. I was driving the Translate Turbo star, I'm Irish, and I know how we operated. At one stage we bought all our fuel in the UK.. but that changed over the years, as the laws changed all over Europe and we were allowed to carry our fuel from country to country. In other words, we didn't have to declare it at the borders.
