Lorry should Not have gone up Sutton Bank. The driver of this lorry has a very narrow escape as he ends up getting stuck on Sutton bank and can not get any grip to get up the hill.
The drive is very lucky we could all move out the way for him as he had to revers all the way back. Mayhem was caused..

Back in the day, I've even seen cars reversing up Sutton Bank, but of course, they would be Austin Seven, Ford Popular, Morris Minor 850cc and the like! Try Lythe Bank, Blue Bank, and even the diminutive Oswaldkirk Bank. Short, steep, and a nasty bend at the bottom! Get it wrong on Lythe Bank, and you're going in the sea!!

I used to drive up and down Sutton bank in the early 70s. I was in the Army and drove either a land rover with trailer or an Austin k9 and generator trailer. We had to go up and down the hill in 4 wheel drive. On one occasion I was coming down in frost and ice and the vehicle slipped out of gear. The only way to get it back into drive was to stop. In doing so the vehicle slid , hit the rock face and ended up with generator trailer hanging over a very long drop. Change of underwear and back up the top to start again!

As an HGV driver of 32 years, the problem with this climb is that you can’t get a good run at due to a tight bend at the bottom of it…I have been up there many times in a Globetrotter with maybe 10 tonnes on a fridge trailer, as all trucks are now automatic you need to put it in manual and floor it, if it’s dry you will get up the incline.

Exactly .. That really slight climb before the main event lulls drivers into complacency for sure. Trouble is drivers think they know best & ignore the signs . Stick it in manual mode as soon as the power dies.. 1st gear & DONT FKN TOUCH IT & you are away. I regularly see guys just on the steep exit ramps out of Dover stall & thats only about 30mtr long. My last SB experiance was in a 480 Scania about 40t up with timber.. she was hot n screaming but climbed it ok.. Bit of a wobble with traction on that right hander at the top.. but we made it.

The incline is NOT the the issue. The common use of 2x6 in the UK is the issue. All axles at the rear should be live/driven, either 4x6 or 4x2. I grew up in a hilly country where this incline is not even that steep. Imported used Euro trucks get that dead axle removed before import as they are of no use as highligted here.

went up Sutton Bank scenic route to north east fully loaded ( MISTAKE ) fortunately i was driving a FODEN with double drive and cross axle DIFF LOCKS the drive wheels started to spin about three quarters of the way up AND I WENT INTO A COLD SWEAT but finally made it ( the only good point with the FODEN was its ability to get the driver out of trouble in situations like this when driven by a numpty)

I've been up there twice. First time going to Scarborough, was half loaded, so 12 ton, but struggled. The second time has a abnormal load & the police movement order sent me that way. I was delivering to a building site in Kirkymoorside . Luckily they were flooring cassettes so wasn't very heavy, about 10 ton.

The give away pointing to the drivers inexperience is that he has to keep stopping every couple meters to get his bearings whilst reversing. Bet he never used the lift axle on the tag or even the crawler gear ? Taken loads of artics and rigids up and down Sutton bank, it's a long way round if we don't use it.

With a diversion sign, Obviously service vehicles that need that road hence for Hemsley or farm delivery know the road well and know how to take that bend, let alone in the right gear, like it's been said in an automatic get it into manual mode, the bend is almost hairpin let alone the sharp gradient.

have to be honest, if you dont know the area, you dont get much warning that your satnav is wrong to take you that way and have to hope you know where you are going. the satnav will try to pull you back to there through all the small roads over and over and finding somewhere to stop is rough to re route is hard in some of these places, no where that doesnt end up causing a bad blind overtake

You must be in low gear when you approach the hairpin, it is after all 25./. I won't go this way if it's been raining as the surface is slippery, if your truck is auto, as many are now, manually select 2nd gear, first not usually required.

The bottom of the bank is deceptive. Before the hairpin, there is an ascent, but it does not look like 1 in 4, although it is. Incidentally, when road numbering began, the A170 did not go through to Thirsk, as the MOT did not think that such a steep hill should be on an A-road. Sutton Bank was originally a B-road. Illogically, Countisbury and Porlock hills have always been on an A-road, the A39 to be precise!
