After visiting three sirens we've seen on previous walks (and still confused as to what two of them are) I visit some new and interesting sirens many have been asking for in the comments.
Oh, and be sure to watch till the end for some bonus footage.

The motor of the 2T22 is in between the sets of sound projectors. That little hat on the top is a cover for the upper intake so it wont suck in and make mashed potato out of a bird while its running. It also prevents rain and snow from getting in and corroding the 12 port chopper.

Wow, I didn't even know about that B&M Siren ! It looks like the typical "bench grinder" design mainly used on UK made sirens ! As for the 2T22 siren I suggest you to find a video of one on KZfaq and listen, the two tones are harmonic so it sounds nice ! For some reason KZfaq never gave me the notification of this video even though I activated all notifications from your channel. It happens, it's a well known KZfaq thing sadly.

I tried climbing the 2nd siren at the park lmao. The b&m is definitely an old relic. I’ve lived near the area for around 10 years and I’ve never heard it go off. The 2t22 on Downey road hasn’t ever gone off either. Not even for the recycling plant fire back in 2014 or 2015 The 2t22 near the LA river hasn’t ever gone off either. VFD doesn’t have a fire siren system. Pretty sure they’re part of the LA County Civil Defense system. If you want something active, Torrance, APU, and Orange County have active sirens. I’m not sure about vinvale terminal though. Vinvale's is active. For sure.

Orange County doesn’t really have sirens because SONGS siren system was removed in July of 2019 because SONGS was decommissioned. Most of them were north of the nuclear generating station. There were 17 in Camp Pendleton. The only sirens you may find are old ones or laguna beach or Newport Beach. The San Onofre sirens that use to be part of the NPP or NGS (Nuclear generating station) are gone except some on Camp Pendleton and the Thunderbolt 1003 on the reactor building.

Pretty sure the emergency signal was referring to the traffic light that was on the top of the pole, you caught a glimpse of it on camera. Usually when there’s an emergency, that light will turn red or flash red to let the fire engine out of the garage without dealing with traffic. A lot of fire departments on busy roads here in Florida have the same emergency signal signs with traffic lights specifically assigned to the exit of the garages. Doubt it had anything to do with the 2T22 but it doesn’t rule out the siren from being used for fire calls. You could always call the department or ask someone in the firehouse if they use the sirens for fire calls.

You might be right. I was five hours in at the end of a 9 mile walk so had siren on the brain. I'll check the footage out because I don't recall seeing a signal light on the street, but it's not beyond doubt that I overlooked it. Either way, I like that to 'could' also mean the siren. Thanks for the info.

@@DayTrippingAdventurer Oh, c'mon Doug! The sign was on the cross bar holding two traffic signals flanking the sign! 🤓 In all seriousness, I wished more departments put those up. Displays continuous green until the firehouse gets a callout, then it turns red. When I was a volunteer, I was amazed at the number of drivers who considered fire equipment as "annoyances" and didn't bother yielding. Those signals gives the apparatus a fighting chance in getting out of the firehouse!
@Cnw8701
@Cnw8701 2 жыл бұрын
@@tommanion5504 You'd think every firehouse or fire station along a busy street would have a fire signal! In my hometown (Dayton, Ohio), many of the older fire stations along the busier roads have flashing yellow lights that turn red whenever a firetruck runs over the concrete that leads onto the main road. There's a trigger buried underneath the concrete that can only be triggered by the weight of one of the trucks which sets off the signal.

Wow there are two more 2t22s that i didn't know existed! The 2t22 is.the american version of the classic 12/10 port British ww2 air raid siren. Same port configuration But a little higher pitch Because of the 60hz north american current vs the 50hz style British current. The 2/3t22 is the classic storm siren used aross the Midwest & back east. Originally developed for the cold war,they have and still set a unique standard for alerting communities till this day. There still are a few out there still in service today. They weigh around 500 lbs fully assembled. The 3t22 weighs slightly more with the additional upper and lower intake doors and solenoids for 3rd signal capabilities...

Interesting thing to note about the LA Model 5s/7s, one of then had came down and tag shots revealed it to be marked as a 10HP, designated as a type 10. Also the Cut down fedelcodes are likely mostly dual toned sirens, rather than single toned.

From what I've read and learned, sirens were the main form of alert from WWII through the Cold War into the 80s. By the 90s sirens were no longer used for Civil Defense. Mostly because we had cell phones and pagers on nearly every person and the ability to detect and relay foreign launch information had gotten to the point where we'd have ample warning. And anything that got close enough to launch right off the coast would be too close for a warning to do much good. Where sirens are in use now is for regional emergencies like fires, tornadoes, and tsunamis. So there's only a few left active in the Los Angeles area where I'm walking. One of which is on Catalina Island, which makes sense as a tsunami warning system. Thanks for the comment!
@imaginox9
@imaginox9 3 жыл бұрын
The FS 500 sirens (all versions) are known for their rotating mechanism (which uses a belt) to become loose overtime and so the siren rotates when it's not activated because of the wind blowing on it. So if the siren wasn't sounding but rotating from left to right that's maybe why. If the siren was doing full 360° circles without sounding then it was maybe either a test of the rotator or it was supposed to sound and the siren was broken but not the rotator.
