In an effort to get all of our minds off of the virus for 20 minutes or so we decided to put together a quick tour of the Los Angeles County Fire museum restoration shop.
Los Angeles County Fire Museum President Paul Schneider is talking and museum VP Joe Woyjeck is attempting to film. Enjoy...

I joined the local firehouse in 1980 we still have a (restored )1953 Mack and our first out was a 1954 Mack Thermodyne, a 1959 2 1/2 ton army truck repurposed into brush truck, a 1968 Ford Grumman rescue and we also had a 1972 Mack. Going to the museum is on my bucket list. I think Emergency was my inspiration to join the fire service.

Thanks for the walk around guys. 'Emergency' was a favourite child hood TV show for Me, I didn't know then, but it set my path to a 30+ year career as a Firefighter, and after 30 odd years still love looking at old fire truck . . . so it's great to see the Engine 51 & Squad 51 in the Museum. Would be great to visit one day, but it's a long Flight from Australia. Cheers

My whole life I have lived with the upmost respect and adoration for all of those who serve in this capacity! As it turns out I retired across the street from Johhny Policek who was 24 years with the Omaha fire department and a captain in my district when I was a little boy. Johhny is gone now but his wife Lois still lives there and they had a very large family all of which either served with police or fire. We live in Nebraska and get a good amount of snow usually in the winters I make sure that I snow blow her driveway first, God bless you all and thank you.

Thanks to Joe and Paul for the walk around. A hand salute to all those who helped to create what I believe is the finest fire museum in the nation. I am humbled and honored to have been a tiny part of the history of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. My thanks to all those with the vision, e,g., James O. Page, and those who volunteered countless hours to make the Los Angeles County Fire Museum a reality and appreciation to the many businesses who donated their service. Medic 3

Great video! I thought that was Joe behind the camera. I first met Joe in San Diego at Firehouse World not long after the tragic death of his son Kevin. Joe was outside tinkering with Squad 51 outside. We got to talking and I really enjoyed our time talking & being around Engine & Squad 51 before they took them inside for the conference. Hey Joe, I'm now in Arizona, Yuma to be exact and plan to hike the Memorial trail. I've been to the heritage center in Prescott and to the memorial near Yarnell. If you get out this way give me a shout. Brad Hoff

I'm in a voluntary fd in Franklin NJ and our town was a mining town, NJ zinc and the town was ran by the mining company. In 1916 the company bought a 1915 American Lafrance gas powered pumper. It was the first motorized fire truck in our county. In 1927 or 28 the company bought a 1926 American Lafrance. In 1956 the zinc co left and donated the trucks to the town and in the 60s they were finally retired and sold to a local farmer who stuck both of them in a barn. When he passed the family gave the truck's to the members of the dept. Who restored the 15 to original specs except for the tires, they were converted to pneumatic in the 40s and we haven't been able to find the hubs to bring back to the solid rubber tires. I've marched with that truck in many parades, including the states NJ firefighters convention in Wildwood nj. The 26 is now completely finished to. You can look up these two trucks on the web Franklin NJ 07416, Sussex County NJ, Franklin Fire Department Inc. We also built a museum next to our firehouse. Both trucks were restored by the members of the company with money raised by a shit load of venison and spaghetti dinners.

All the trucks look nice but the Mack is the truck. OK so I live on the East Coast in Maryland and the first trucks i I drove were 53 and 54 Mack no power anything and of course manual transmission non-synchronized. But I still like Mack even though they don’t make more. Great museum thanks for taking it

When did the museum acquire the closed cab Engine 51? I'm almost certain I remember reading or seeing an article a few years back, saying it was in mothballs at some ski resort after a ridiculously long service life.

The Ward LaFrance once done with filming Emergency! became a working engine and after it was retired by LA County it was a engine with the Fire Protection District up in Yosemite National Park. The museum received the Ward in the early 2010s.

I read that Engine 51 Ward LaFrance was built to be a prop more than an actual fire engine. It doesn't hold as much water as a production engine does and the pump motor(s?) is/are not as powerful as those used on a regular engine.

8:04 is this the famous engine 51 from the tv show, who served a few years in Yosemite National Park in the Y.C.S Fire Department ? Engine 51 should have come to the museum in 2008 and been restored in 2011 - this video is from 2020 - can that be?

Most Southern California departments had open cabs until sometime in the 70's and 80's. Remember, we don't get that much rain here. The cabs were built to get wet, from either the weather or from water spray at a fire. I got hired in 82 and we still had a few open cabs. I spent some cold nights responding in an open cab rig. (OK, socal cold, not Midwest cold, it's all relative, lol. ) I remember the complaining and push back from the old salts when they started to put roofs on the rigs, mainly too confining, and poor visibility when arriving at a fire. Thanks for the video, I just came across it today.
