This is a video from my private collection that I had released on FaceBook 7 years ago!!! Pardon my bragging but I had to move heaven and earth to get it (and it is a long story for another day) and even the TV station where the interview took place circa 1977 did not have a copy and could not be bothered to look.
Ray is interviewed here by Los Angeles movie critic Kevin Thomas who does come up with some good questions even though he doesn't seem especially familiar with Ray's milieu. For my international friends I would like to point out that Ray was as far a cry from "Bollywood" as could be imagined.
First 2 minutes are a bit unstable but after that it is OK. I had to patch it together from a few different fragments and this was the best that could be done. I donated a copy to the Ray Archives in Santa Cruz and presented one to Sandip Ray.
Update: May 10, 2017: This video is starting to go viral on FaceBook. It is time for me to post it on KZfaq for reaching the widest possible audience. I am so happy and thankful to people who are sharing this and getting the word out. I shall deem my efforts fruitful. I do not own the copyright to video. Sharing it is for educational purposes. Yet another glimpse into the mind of this great artistic genius.

As others have commented, Mr. Ray was a beautifully articulate speaker, expressing modesty and great intelligence simultaneously. Kevin Thomas however reminds me of the famous Adagia 2302 of Desiderius Erasmus (incorrectly cited as an Icelandic proverb), "Every man enjoyeth the smell of his own farts". :)

He IS speaking with an accent, no language is 'without' accent. His accent is just one which we do not usually associate with "Indian English" in popular culture. :) I'd say Satyajitbabu's accent here is closest to what is considered RP (Received Pronunciation)- a particular accent of English most associated with the upper classes in London, UK. And the interviewer's accent is somewhat American West Coast.

Satyajit Ray has been quite scathing in his disdain for commercial Indian movies, both in his interviews and movies, about how shallow and escapist they mostly are. Sadly, little has changed. Here we are in 2020, and you have most people on this comment thread commenting about more superfluous things like the clothes he wears, or the way he speaks, instead of engaging with the ideas he brings to the front. Stupidity is created as that is precisely what the audience craves.

As a Bengali postgrad studying at the University of Queensland and living among foreigners in Brisbane, I can't help but marvel at Ray's wanderlust as reflected in his Feluda writings. I am still devouring Ananda Publishers' Completed Feluda edition tomes here. And being devoted to auteurs like Fellini, Tarkovsky and Bergman, I feel very proud as a Bengali that Ray could his own niche among the masters of world cinema, which is a huge feat. His euphonious speech is another gift.
