Smokey probably slaughtered the passengers and deliberately placed their bodies in a place where Sawyer would discover them, hoping he would presume it to be Widmore's handiwork. Smokey was always looking to play the various groups against each other in order to achieve his ends.

The Lost Encyclopedia says that Charles Widmore's goons killed them. But I am not that fan of that explanation. I can't possibly see why Seamus, Zoe and a few others massacring that entire group - without any visible gunshot wounds. I like the explanation that MIB did it instead. So this is a case I would rather disregard the Encyclopedia since it makes less sense.

Thanks for this one. I have to be honest. The question of who killed these people had never really crossed my mind, but your answer is a sensible one, and there's no good reason to question it. Regarding the appearance of the MiB to Michael on the Kahana, I'd always seen that as a mere "projection" with no real physicality, and unable to truly interact, other than stating that one "you can go now" line. I'm guessing that "destiny" couldn't allow the explosion until Jin was in a (relatively) safe place, as he hadn't time travelled yet?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Fake Christian on the Kahana could be a projection or a teleportation. It's hard to tell what the difference is in that scene. Although it remains immaterial. The sticking point for many was this idea that the Man in Black cannot travel over water (or has to take a boat to go between islands whilst in human form). The reality is that we see him appear on the Kahana to Michael plain as day in S4. Fake Locke later tells Sawyer that he cannot move between islands in this way, at least not in smoke form, but we know that's an intentionally misleading lie because we have evidence to the contrary. MiB is playing a long con on the candidates and making them believe their plans and choices are their own. Anyway, I digress! You are absolutely right in saying that the freighter bomb could not have exploded until everyone was in position. This was Michael's whole purpose in S4 and why he could not die. He was there to buy them all time, including Jin. Had he not been aboard and freezing that battery, the Oceanic 6 would have perished in the explosion too.

@@francissellerdude Michael was a candidate and the Man in Black relished the death of candidates. His appearance on the Kahana was to see off someone who might have been a key player on Jacob's list. After all, Michael is the only reason why a majority of the remaining candidates didn't blow up on the freighter. I view this as a moment of spite on behalf of MiB. "You can stop being a nuisance and die now." How did the Main in Black know Michael's death was imminent? It is indicated that the power keeping candidates alive is the same power the Man in Black is connected to: The Source. Therefore, Mi/b senses and intuits things like this. We see him instinctively know that his plan to kill the candidates on the sub in Season Six has failed without getting visual confirmation. He just senses when candidates are about to die and when they have died. Death is the dominion of the smoke monster.

Thank you for watching! S2 episode 'Maternity Leave' essentially shows us what happened to Claire after she was kidnapped. Ethan took her to The Staff medical station, where he monitored her pregnancy and administered injections of the DHARMA vaccine to ensure safe delivery. Claire was kept drugged throughout her time there. The Others prepared to induce labour and deliver the baby, even if it killed Claire. Alex Rousseau saves her from this operation and releases her into the jungle where she is found by Danielle. I think the episode paints a fairly decent picture of what happened to Claire during her time in captivity. However, I will be making a video on Claire's psychic and the reasons why she boarded Oceanic 815, so keep an eye out for that one.

Your underlying assumption is that the Christian Shepherd who appears to Michael is the smoke monster and that he can 'teleport' off island, even though he claims he cannot. The island bubble theory seems weak to me. My operating assumption is that he cannot travel over water in his smoke monster shape. He has to have access to a body or have corporeal form and go the slower way, by dugout canoe.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
The Man in Black makes many claims and lies about many things. The only person telling us that he cannot travel over water is *him*. We have literal evidence to the contrary with Fake Christian appearing to Michael on the freighter (wearing the same clothes from the cabin and speaking in the same ominous way). Michael is also a candidate whose time has come to an end. Fake Locke later tells Sawyer that he cannot move between islands or over water because it's part of his long con on the candidates. He needed Sawyer to do the recon to Hydra and to make his own plans for escape. He knew Sawyer would double cross him. He needed the group to believe that the smoke monster was limited by (and in) water. Hence why Sawyer tells Jack to "get him in the water" when they make their sub escape. This gives the group confidence in ditching him and motivation to haul ass without thinking. The MiB makes them believe their plans and choices are their own. The Island bubble is not a theory btw. It is demonstrated in the show when the island is moved. Because it takes Hydra Island with it. Which means there is a snow globe effect around this whole area.

Ya, I'm not sold on MiB being the Christian Shephard on the freighter. There are several instances of apparitions and ghosts existing in this LOST universe. There is also a lot of inconsistencies in the cannon and lore of the show, so it's hard to put too much faith into one piece of evidence, when it could just be an oversight. The whispers on the island were eventually revealed as being people who died on the island, trying to warn the characters. But there is also a scene with Ben, when he kidnaps Alex as a baby and warns Russeau that if she hears whispers, she better run in the other direction. Which seems to imply that "The others" are responsible for those whispers in some way. At the end of the day, the MiB theory is plausible, but it may not be what was intended by the writers. I am of the opinion that Christian was often used by MiB but I also believe there were some instances of him appearing as a friendly apparition, or possibly, Jacob taking the form of Christian. I believe that is the more likely answer for Christian being on the freighter. Michael desperately wanted to end his life, and either Jacob or "Ghost Christian" appeared to let him know that his time had come. We do know that Jacob has the ability to conceal and reveal his presence to certain people but there is no indication that Smokey has that ability. Also, when MiB takes the form of characters, he often seems to do it in order to lead them into danger. He almost gets Jack to run off a cliff in the 1st season. I'm pretty sure he takes the form of Goodwin's wife, who convinces Juliet to pursue Charlotte and Daniel and then kill them before they can blow up the island. But we later learn that killing them would have actually caused everyone of the island to die.... which is exactly what MiB wanted. The MiB lore can be confusing tho, because they didn't even decide what "the monster" was gonna be or what it would look like until after season 1. Like, smokey killing Mr Eko. That was a plothole that they tried to resolve by adding in the part about candidates having their names crossed off the wall, because it wasn't ever supposed to be allowed to kill candidates. I dunno, still a dope show.... so I can accept either theory.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108

@@RustCole01 Many points to address in your comment, but the primary one is that Christian on the freighter was absolutely the Man in Black. He's literally wearing the same clothes that MiB-Christian was wearing in the cabin, and expresses the same demeanour and manifests in the same ominous sudden appearance as all MiB apparitions. Furthermore, there is no reason for real Christian's Ghost to appear to a man that he never met or interacted with just to tell him he can die (why on earth would Christian come back from the dead to be a dick to a random man? It makes no sense lol). Michael was a candidate and we know MiB senses when candidates are still alive or about to die, as evidenced in 'What They Died For' when he simply knows through intuition that the sub blew up but it didn't kill everyone. I unpack all of this in my video on the island apparitions here, which I recommend you watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLGqbMxj2LuYhaM.html There is honestly no ambiguity in that scene as to which Christian we are seeing in that moment. The Man in Black could teleport over water between the islands, as long as he was within the bubble's radius. We literally see him do this. What he told Sawyer was a lie, part of his long con. Again, I delve into this in the aforementioned video. It's worth mentioning that Damon Lindelof recently revealed in an interview that the whispers were mostly the voices of the dead but sometimes the whispers came from the Man in Black, since he was a collection of dead voices. So, that's an interesting additional bit of trivia. Either way, the whispers only came from the dead and never The Others. Ben only tells Rousseau to runaway whenever she hears whispers in the jungle to scare her into staying on the fringes of the jungle and not moving further inland to find Alex. The whispers manifest in the jungle frequently, hence they make for a good deterrent. But this statement wasn't a confirmation that the whispers and The Others were one in the same. It made no sense for the whispers to be The Others, even back in Season One. We literally hear the voice of Frank Duckett (the innocent man Sawyer shot and killed) speak to Sawyer: "It'll come back around." That is clearly not The Others. And, I should add, of the 20-odd times that the whispers occurred across the series, only four of those times coincided with appearances from The Others. And those events were always based around conflict of some kind, of which we see the ghosts are drawn to in other circumstances too. Another point I wanted to address is your point about Eko. He was not a candidate when he died nor was he ever a candidate before that. I've discussed this in detail elsewhere but will be bringing it up again in a future video. Eko's name is nowhere to be found on the cave wall or the lighthouse dial in the show itself. His death is not a plot hole. A lot of people reference Lostpedia's low-res photo of the lighthouse dial prop from the show as having Eko's name on it, but it's impossible to read names off the image. But the biggest issue is that some fans claim the name "Eko" is written on the dial, which isn't possible. Jacob wrote candidate names down by their surnames. Eko was a first name. His surname was Tunde. "Mr. Eko" was his badass warlord moniker. Even Yemi called him Eko. Eko being a candidate is just a widespread misconception. I agree that there are some inconsistencies in the mythology as a result of the lore being in flux, but the final two seasons present information that tends to settle most of these debates. And some of these disagreements stem from bad info being passed around the fanbase for years, like the Eko one. But, basically, by the last two years of the show, the writers had settled on their answers, even if some of them superseded old set-ups. Most of the time we only need to retroactively apply the logic of later seasons backwards through the series. The only retconned mystery that genuinely has equal supporting evidence to counter and contradict each other (and is hard to find a single smoking gun for) is the purge date.
@RustCole01

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I mean, saying Eko wasn't a candidate 3 years after he asked to be written off the show is not exactly proof pf anything. It's not like we had a shot of the names in season 1 to compare to season 6. But I agree, they did at least attempt to explain most of the lore and possible loose ends. Also, I didn't view Christian's appearance on the freighter as a taunt... more like a farewell. But I will repeat, your theory is just as acceptable to me as my own, so I'm not trying to take digs at your video. I can barely muster up the energy to wave to my neighbor when I drive thru my neighborhood, so pouring this amount of effort into creating these videos is incomprehensible to me. Should probably mention that I have watched most of your vids several times. Also, I didn't mean to imply that The Others were making the whisper sounds, only that Ben seemed to imply that the whispers were associated with the presence of The Others. Which, to be fair, would make sense if the dead spirits were warning people... seeing as The Others mostly just kidnapped and killed folks. I would imagine that The Others could hear the whispers whenever they closing in on one of their victims, so it also fits with your theory of Ben trying to scare Danielle. I'll have to give the apparitions thing some more thought and maybe rewatch some episodes. Because the genuine apparitions/spirits seem to have a bright aura of light radiating around them. For now, I think we should just assume that I am always right. Jk. Great job on the vids by the way.

@@RustCole01 I understand where you're coming from and I appreciate your kind comments. Yeah, I doubt the concept of candidates was developed at the time Eko was killed, at least not to the degree that we see candidate lore explored in Season Six. But the point I was making is that nothing in the show after Eko's death suggests or indicates that he was a candidate, so the Man in Black's ability to kill him isn't a plot hole. Had the writers wanted us to know Eko was a candidate then they would have highlighted his name on the cave wall or lighthouse dial, like they do with many other characters. We find out retroactively that people like Faraday, Charlotte, Rousseau, Boone, Shannon and many other dead characters were candidates. But Eko's name is never seen. The writers didn't want to contradict his death like that. We also find out that a name being crossed off the wall doesn't actually affect candidacy as Jacob tells Kate in the penultimate episode: "It's just a line of chalk on a wall. The job is yours if you want it, Kate." Which means you remain a candidate until either someone takes the job or you die. Legit apparitions and spirits don't always appear in an aura of light. We know that Michael was a legit ghost but he isn't bathed in light. I think the ones that return from the other side of The Source and aren't trapped on The Island or in some purgatory state are more likely to look like Claudia and Isabella (calm, happy, at peace, etc.) With Christian on the freighter, I always read that scene (even at the time of first viewing) as ominous. He appears and just says quite coldly: "You can go now, Michael" and then Michael asks "Who are you?". Then BOOM! He'd dead. He dies in a state of confusion and shock, not peace. We know that because he remains trapped on The Island afterwards. He didn't get to make full amends with his son. Also, Michael's words "who are you?" are the exact same words that Eko uses when he realises Yemi isn't Yemi. It was the writers way of drawing a comparison. These ghosts are not who they appear to be. They are imposters.

I was having this conversation with another poster recently -- if Harper was the MiB, a whisper ghost, or a living "Other". This moment is fairly open to interpretation since we never get any further context around Harper. We can only go off Juliet's reaction. Juliet does not act as if Harper is dead, nor do they converse in a way that suggests Harper is an imposter. I personally don't think Harper was MiB or a whisper ghost, just a sneaky "Other". We see The Others on various occasions appear and stealth-sneak around the island; implausibly perhaps but not supernatural in any way. The whispers just tend to be observers as events unfold and occasionally speak up when things are getting interesting, or conflict is about to go down. The Man in Black already had his plan with Ben & Locke in motion at this point so he didn't really need to do much else beyond wait for their return to the cabin.

@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Charles claims that Jacob visited him off-island at some point after the Oceanic Six returned home in 2005 but before John Locke appeared in 2007. Jacob would have explained to Widmore what was at stake with the Man in Black and instructed him to help Locke and the Oceanic Six get back to the Island. If anything went wrong with that (as it does once Locke turns up dead), he must bring Desmond back to the Island as the "fail-safe". Widmore's entire motivation and purpose in S5-S6 are based on this off-screen meeting with Jacob. And we know this meeting took place because Jacob tells Hurley that he wants Widmore to find the Island in S6 episode 'Lighthouse', and Widmore has knowledge that only Jacob could have imparted to him. If you haven't already, I recommend you watch Chapter Nine on "Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking" as it elaborates on this a bit more.

Faraday, Widmore and Lapidus all individually confirm that the mercenaries primary objective was removing Benjamin Linus from power. Keamy only activated secondary protocol because Ben used the island equivalent of a WMD on the mercenaries, i.e. the smoke monster. Widmore’s goal was two fold: 1. Send predestined time travellers (including his son) to the island to fulfil his responsibilities to the timeline. 2. Help John Locke become leader of The Others and settle an old score with Ben in the process. But if all else failed, he gave instructions to Keamy to kill anyone that got in the way. Widmore does not lie to Locke when they meet in Tunisia. By this point Jacob had already come to visit Widmore and gotten him on side. He might be a ruthless man but he was clearly helping Locke. Widmore had no reason to lie about any of this by this point. Whereas Ben killed Locke. Ben is the liar, which is proven time and again. And we have multiple confirmations from different characters about the freighter mission. Lapidus tells our Losties that the mercenaries only mission was retrieving Ben, which is backed up by what we see in the show. We clearly see that Keamy’s men are only interested in getting Ben to begin with. Once they have him in the season four finale they prepare to leave the island with him. They don’t try to torch the island or kill anyone else. There is a whole scene in which Keamy argues with Captain Gault about having to activate “secondary protocol” because they couldn’t get him and that’s when “torching the island” is brought up. Then Ben literally confesses in season five to Dark Locke that had he just gone with the mercenaries that Alex would still be alive. Every character, including Ben, eventually back up this reading of what happened. Torching this island and killing more people was a fail-safe emergency scenario, not the first option. Widmore wanted Ben gone to settle an old score and to fulfil his debt to the time loop.

Why did the black smoke help Mike to blow up the ship?

The Man in Black technically didn't set the bomb off. He was just there to spectate. Michael was a candidate whose time was up.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 As far as I remember, he appeared in his dreams as Jack's father, and said "you can atone your guilt by completing a mission on the ship." Why did he said that ? why did he care? These mercenaries could shoot all candidates, and he could leave the island. isn't he ?

I think you have muddled a few details in your memory. Christian never appears in dreams to Michael. Libby manifests to Michael in his dreams. And no apparition ever tells Michael he has to go on a mission on the freighter. Tom Friendly from The Others is the one who shows up to send him on the mission, on Ben's orders. The only time Michael ever interacts with any version of Christian is on the freighter, seconds before his death. And that apparition he sees is the Man in Black version of Christian.

Those people had bought their tickets before he arrived at the airport. He bought the remaining seats, sparing the lives of quite a few people.

But they couldn't pilot the plane without Frank because he was on the other island with our Losties. He killed them because they were expendable.
