The series I never knew I needed.

I'm 34 now and this punched me in thne nostalgia.. I remember my first club experience. 15 years old going to Jupiter and Space bar in Newmarket - then heading into town to go to the Immigrant. When I was 18-19 i got into House, deep house, dnb etc - Calibre on K Road, Asta on Shortland, Fu bar, Carpark under the bridge.. Met and Code, Lenin, Float, Spy.. oh the memories

Leftfield was the OG name for float and in the eary 2000s it was the place that everyone was trying to get into across a broad age group and music, sports cafe was filmed there and it was good times. Pretty much a super club at the time.

Suga Reef, Threshold, Candio's, Stair Case, Club Roma, Fubar, Boogie Wanderland, Alfie's, Dispensary Bar, Club Miami, Club Bali, studio X, Coliseum, Forge, Powerstation and many more clubs and bars to mention, but back then you could club from 9pm - 8am Wednesday to Sunday morning, good times!!!!

Nice to hear a mention of Alfies. I had a nearly 10 year residency as weekend DJ there. A great time in my life. Worked with many great people. The Bloomers girls including Georgina Beyer and a very young Bevan Keys. Great little night club!

Code & Met Bar…Thursdays with Peter James would always go off and Sirveres right about his drops, they were so clean when ya watched him do it live. Billy Scanlon ( RIP ) used to run that door and had one of the best doorman crews at that time before street & security crew politics kicked in. Those days were so good!!!

OMG. I remember so many great gigs at The Power Station in the 90’s and early 00’s. I think I even saw my first ever Shakespearean play here while I was doing 6th form at Long Bay College. Simon Prast played Hamlet. But also loads of fab music. Also Fu Bar and Alfie’s. Epic nights were had there…always after other places were done, we’d end up there. 🎉 Another amazing nostalgia tour mate. Thanks boys. 👍♥️

Amazing guys. Fu Bar was just the left side for a long time before they opened the bigger room on the right. Before that in 1997 (and maybe into 98) it was called Buddha Bar which was also great.

And, big ups to all the door guys. They kept everyone safe, weeded out the drunks. So much time for the guys who bounced at Supper, Calibre, Ink. Papa @ Ink - such a nice guy.

Maybe the next walking interview needs to be with a doorman. Papa ex Calibre and now Ink doorman has been round since the 1990s. He would be an awesome person to talk to.

Woah, the Manhatten has changed heaps. I didn't realise that the Manhatten was a nightclub but it was infamous amongst the poly community to hold weddings, funerals, birthdays etc. I think it was in the late 80s my older brother had his haircutting ceremony at the Manhatten and back then that was when they had the booths on the far side of the room and each booth had their own push button phones and it had a darker decor and a stage in the middle to the back of the hall and then they had a dj booth/set up next to the bar. I remember the late 90's if we did go clubbing we went to this hiphop club on High St (I can't remember the name but I just remember it being narrow but long, like a big cupboard lol. And once that club finished for the night, we made our way down to Some Place Else and we'd stay till the bar would ring the bell and call 'Last Call'. We did the occasional south auckland club/bar but they were more like if family or friends had fundraisers. Cool trip down memory lane

This man is very special to me. First met as a 16 year old on the baskeball court at Mt Roskill Grammar School when he would pull his car up to the court and play us some sounds while we jammed. We connected over the love of bball, MJ, and Wu Tang to begin with. I was fortunate to be able to hang with the bro and meet many many legends in the music industry over the years. From True School on 95bfm to playing basketball with Montel Jordan at DLTs warehouse pad on Crummer Rd just down the hill from the old Mai FM location in Ponsonby which had a giant bombing of Michael Jordan and Bruce Lee on the walls as seen on the Chains video clip. So many great memories with Phil and the club/DJ scene he will always be my big bro❤ thanks so much for this Shae

Great doco lads! Float was originally called Leftfield. Sportscafe was filmed there every Wednesday night, then full on nightclub Friday and Saturday. Hey Phil did you ever DJ at H2O on Quay St?

Clubs I remember from the 90s .Custom House,Cactus Jack's,DTM's, Club Polyz,Club Roma,DeBretts,Studio X,The Duke,Cleos, Changes,Sunset Palms,The Bus Stop,Ellersie Oaks .

Daayam I remember The Forge!,Club Manhattan those phones really worked for me!! 😂 Remember scoring the only white girl in the club one night! Hahaha!! It was an old movie theater and the projection booth was the dj booth! Shivery was alive & well back then! 1988/89 Actually I remember all the Djs formats and set lists there. I lived on that dance floor! Got to spend some time in that booth. Learned a lot from just listening to other djs Alotta new Jack swing,R&B,Hiphop etc etc of the funk kind!Was awesome!!😂 ,Club Raro,Club 21,(Rocky’s),Megadrome,Cleopatras I’d go there to see Ardijah play in Panmure. Club Roma,Abbeys,Park in a bar,Kandyos,Julianoes which became Club Polynese,Club Miami,Timbuktu,Stanleys,Hotel Debrett,Grapes,Alfies,I remember the drag shows there. I also remember what they would do to the odd under ager if caught. Lol The stair case etc etc etc. Hell I was playing that 12” of You to me are everything too. Released in 1976 but re released in 86. Still have my copy to this day. Awesome track Brother!! I miss the old school Auckland nightlife!! Hell even The Trident in Onehunga. Like you DJ Sir-VereI was lucky to travel too during that time except with the Navy I got to travel abroad checking out clubs and music stores globally let alone around NZ. You are so right. There was some amazing clubs in the other centers. I was lucky enough to also be Djing many of them back then myself. Last time Insaw you Bro was at Club 604 here in Christchurch. A little while ago now. I also remember you at Club Roma. You were the man. What you’d never know is that I was one of your students just by listening as I listened to many other Djs of the time. TeePee in Wellington,Nedroy etc Still remember The Fan Club visiting Roma. So many stories! So many memories!

I remember going to the Powerstation (Asylum) after the first RWC opener in 1987 when JK got that brilliant individual solo try against Italy. I could never forget the huge spray paint portrait of Judge Dredd on the wall in that club. Thank you both for taking me down memory lane. Great fun times back then and the music was O for awesome ;0)

I was a teenager in the early 2000's but missed the earlier generation of house music and early dance music in auckland, I studied abit about Paradise garage and what you and sir vere are talking about sounds a little bit like it where Larry Levan or Roger Perry in this case was the crowd mover then the venue and people that made up the community really created a scene. Thanks for sharing this.

As soon Shae says Papakura my first thought was that looks like the street where the Forge was🤣 another great tour, nice to see where the manhatten was heard alot about their phones, & i thought i didnt know Fu but as soon as they were standing outside the stairs i recognised it, it was also Threshold back in the early 90s. The main thing i get from these tours, everyplace that was good had their own scene that was unique. Venue and music are what draws us but staff make a place, Its great to hear the stories of these places.

My family rented out the Manhattan back in the 80s for a funeral thing after the burial. I was 10 at the time. I remember the phones.

Phil should've stopped by the old Beat Merchants.... Used to go to Shakers back in the 90's, DJ was Willie back then. Base bar, the Float which singer Joy Enriquez played a free concert.

DJ Sir-Vere, absolute legend and a truly awesome person, always had good interactions with him at Beat Merchants. 30:27 people that weren't there at the time don't realise how much work Fast Crew put in before they had their first music videos etc, their name is synonymous with Fubar for me, they built a following organically. Sir-Vere's respect for them says it all.

Code on Thursdays was legendary, hip-hop night, New Era fitted hats , Met bar upstairs, girls galore, legendary memories...

The Forge was my 3rd gig after Alladins Akld and Billy Joe's Papatoetoe. Worked on and off for about 6 years for owner Tony Dolbear (General Lee's dad). My memories are way before your memories here by about 12 years lol. General Lee's dad owned the Forge and then renamed Oasis and back to Forge. Other clubs like The Peppermill where Adijah was the resident band after the Willie Hona band (Herbs). Good thing about those days as a DJ was working half hour on and half hour off as your night was shared with the band. First DJ at the Forge was Phil then myself and Ken shared the next 15 years. Great days. Awesome subject to follow-up on could make a tv doco 🤔

Absolutely loved this walk down memory lane. My younger brother & II would go clubbing with friends in the mid 80’s to early 90’s. Remember those phone booths at Manhattans lol but Da Bratt was the ultimate club for me. Ur right it was hard to get thru the doors but I think we got in because we were the only Polynesians dressed all in black. Good times!

Seeing this reminds me of the night me che, kapisi(Bran Muffin) Joey Schuster, china man chu, tuffy culture & Jonny sagala were outside for one of the gigs damn native were performing brings back memories of that place. Salute all those who hung around Yifaans & bus depot tagging & fighting...RSBs, CCBs, etc

I remember all these nightclubs, but some had different names. I haven’t been out to one in ages and I do believe Boogie Wonderland was the last one I went to. Awesome place and we dressed up as a night out to Wonderland required it. Correct me if I’m wrong…but wasn’t Club Roma originally Aladdin’s and Club 21 on the corner of Queens Street back in the day. John Tabla - I might be spelling his name wrong, was the owner/operator. This was the place I was able to get into without too much trouble. The guys on the door knew me and I knew - back in the day - the guys in the band, Rock Candy. A US singer by the name of Margaret Love would sing there between sets on some nights. Those were the days when I lived out in Mangere and I would catch a bus into town - with a stop in either Onehunga or Otahuhu…no car back then🤦🏻‍♀️ Funny how far 40 bucks would get you. If you stayed all night long, you had to hitch a ride to as close as possible to home and then catch the last bus or a taxi. I never told my parent where I was going but I’m sure they knew…Aladdin’s use to have fancy dress nights. Can’t remember what for but who cares when you’re having fun. I went as a Playboy Bunny only because my mother had a white rabbit fur coat and I had a white swim suit…with my bunny ears and tail tucked nicely under my coat…off I trotted to the bus stop around the corner from my house. Two things about wearing white…never wear it to a wedding - didn’t know that at 18/19 years old and a white swim suit is see through under lights🤷🏻‍♀️…who would have known. Not me! The was a nightclub upstairs on Customs or Quay Street, my memory is a little dodgy on this one as I didn’t go to it all that often - maybe twice. It was called Drasco’s. My spelling could be off on this one as well. This place was huge and there was a huge set of windows looking out across the harbour. Manhattan’s was a place I really liked because of the telephones. Definitely a head of the times in that department. As you walked in the main doors after getting your hand stamped the booth styled seats and tables were on the right up against the windows which were ‘blacked’ out or frosted. The seating/booths had height backs so you felt enclosed. One other thing that has never left my memory was the time our car died at the traffic lights and the policeman behind us pushed us through a red light. Thank goodness it was later and there wasn’t any other traffic at that time. We laughed and the so did the cop. Fun times had by all…there were so many nightclubs in Auckland City. I do believe there was a place on Fort Street called the Forge. So many fun times were had way back in the day in the late 70’s and early 80’s…super cool!

30:25 : Regarding 'Fast Crew' - I remember when they came to a little blip town in the Far North called Kaeo, and they put on a show at Whangaroa College. It wasn't a concert type community event either, was just a sports day (like pā wars) and these fullas rocked up and energetically performed for a dead ass crowd 😂😂😂 Fuck we were sad cunts!, lol. I heard 'Suburbia Streets' at that little 5 songs concert long before I heard it on the radio 😊

I remember the code on shortland street there was a bouncer that had a problem with me always on their ego trip, many bouncers around town were getting paid tips from patrons in order to get in without waiting in a line . I remember Boogie wonderland was a good place the DJ was in a 70's car

I don’t know if I can remember all the names but I can remember working in a lot of places around there and you could actually do a loop up high street and down queen street. Met and code on Shortland st then deschlers on high street was a great dive bar then and above that was rakinos then heading up high street there was a hip hop club on the right I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me and then up the very top was Asta. I remember when I worked in code and they tried to open up that alley as a smoking area. Think it lasted 6 weeks before council shut it down but we still used it as staff smoko area. I used to live above B bar on commerce street in the dodgy old apartments with lots of dodgy old DJs hahaha. But yeh it’s cool what you guys are showing because half the names I don’t recognise even at age 33 but I guess there’s a generation after me that won’t know, carpark, Lennin, supper, forte, flight, hitch, pony, spy etc.

The first time I went to shakers I was 17, It WAS hard to get in certain clubs but we always got into shakers🥴”Return of the Mack” was popular and I was one of those south Aucklanders that caught the first bus at 5😊
