John, I have just made a trip down pottergate, watching your video, it just proves the importance of capturing snapshots in time, in the short time since you made your video the scaffolding has gone from the pub opposite the chip shop and a wide band of Blue painted where the pub name would normally go, further down another house now has scaffolding, maybe for a house repaint. it was the first time I had walked to the end near Grapes Hill. Cheers

Thank you Dave, for taking the time to do that walk. It never ceases to amaze me how many changes take place within such a short space in time. St Stephens and Thorpe Road spring to mind, and now, as you say, Pottergate.

When I was at City College during the late 90s I used to go to McCawber's Tavern every Friday afternoon for a cheeky pint after my lectures finished at midday (cheeky because I was actually underage). Hello John, is it possible you can do a feature about St Martin's and St Leonard's Terrace in Norwich. These were originally built as worker's cottages for the nearby gas works at Bishop's Bridge. According to a feature in the "Historic Gas Times" they were built using odd pieces of firebricks and bricks from old gas retorts, and they look rathe strange. The general manager of the gas works, Thomas Glover, was responsible for the construction of Kett's Heights Park, which also has terrace walls made from left-over bricks from the gas works.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich

Thanks for your suggestion David. I'm not 100% clear where you mean. Is this St Leonard's Terrace? And where is St Martin's Terrace (looks like Oak Street...?)www.google.com/maps/@52.6318638,1.3126716,3a,90y,340h,83.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1smrnEztgwkL9HmRhoyIhjgQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Yes, that street-view matches a photo of St Leonards Terrace in the article. To quote this article "Glover was responsible for the construction of St Martin's and St Leonard's Terraces above the Bishops' Bridge Gasworks." Perhaps St Martins was renamed to Oak Street.

I'd like to add that cycling on the cobbles of Pottergate is not exactly fun. A lot to take in here.I can imagine the art deco (correct me if that's the wrong term) Morning Star being regarded as out of place when it was built. Sometimes it's difficult to assess the housing conditions from old photos; numbers 77-81 looked quite run down back in the 30s. I particularly like the changes one encounters on Pottergate; from housing at one end to more commercial use at the other end. I lost count of the number of pubs. Thanks as always, John.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Жыл бұрын
Thanks Geoff. I can well imagine cycling would be challenging! Wikipedia descibes the Morning Star as art deco, so I guess that's fairly definitive...it feels very much part of the street scene now. Yes, the street does have a good contrast from one end to the other.

Hello, my dad bought the factory in sibleys Court in 1983 he was a PCB manufacturer the business was called Diathane Ltd . When he bought it we cleared up loads of old shoe factory stuff but there were also huge mirrors advertising tobacco and cigarettes. We were told it was also a tobacco factory first then shoe factory then my dads firm . He sold up after a very successful time there to a developer who then left the whole place empty 20 years . We have alot of good memories of his factory I worked there to he employed around 70 people. I can't remember the year he sold up though .

I wonder if The Morning Star is that same pub in this true warren of streets branching off the Town Hall/Guildhall East side which had an early 1970s lanlord who was notable for a. being the consistently drunkinest barman I've ever known, b. and who I think sat behind the bar all the time, getting off his fundament as little as possible, c. but who had a most (cough) accommodating attitude towards errr borderline drinking age customers? Bless him, but he never ever cheered up despite his fondness for his product. From memory again, the pub was never what you'd call full up (which helped us buying our drinks) but maybe prospective occasional trade was put off a little by the 1930s style brick civic toilet appearance of the exterior? People expected it to be no better than it ought to be. 🙂

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich [I said a warren off on the East, but think that I must really mean West - I don't have a map handy.] Anyway, thanks for the link but the landlord was NOT a man you would get to know the name of when expending your energies on assuming a deep voice and adult demeanour - think Monty Python and the stoning ladies. @@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thinking more, and refining the memory, I think the more likely scenario is of a seated female landlady - Hilda Stolworthy per the online list - parked statically at the end of the bar, with an ever-present elderly barman possessing all the other characteristics I mentioned: quite a combo. Thanks for filling this gap in my history, and adding to Norwich's lost mid-century city story. Finis.
