At one time the local pub was the corner stone of the community. Local people would use them to celebrate new babies, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and sadly funerals. Unfortunately, times change and now it’s purely a business where profits come first and if it means closing down pubs then so be it.

4 years on this now seems to be sadly apt given the rapidly changing demographic of our city and almost very other town and city across the country. Anybody remember the Embledon Arms, known locally as the Gluepot or usually just the Gluey?

At 2:17 The Grapes, Celt Street was my local. Looking at the photo, the pub is on the right of Celt St and our house was in the block immediately to the left of it. The landlord, in the sixties and early seventies, was Joe Croft, ably assisted by his wife. It was a Bents brewery pub and I had many good nights in there. I also had a few good nights in The Newsham Park Hotel, which was a bit further along the road toward West Derby, from The grapes.

3:16 Mount Vernon Arms. Right opposite my school, I walked past it everyday for 7 years. Had a beer in there just once on a pub crawl from Edge Lane into town. Now sadly demolished.

Old roan is sad, first licensed in the 1600’s, it was an coaching inn on the A59, so much history left abandoned so some midlands based developers can pull it down to build crap flats

The Brown Cow on Gt Howard street, I started my apprenticeship just opposite in Glegg St 1977. We used to nip over for a quick pint at lunch time during the Summer. Happy Days.

@@levi501ize Aye, I`m sure there used to be a pub on the opposite corner but I cant remember the name of it. I still pass down that way on my way to the docks.

Hi Paul thanks for checking out the video. There is a pub in Linacre road called the SALT HOUSE. As far as I know it's still open.

They were places were men went to spend the wages their families needed. My mother had to chase my father down in so many in Toxteth. All best gone.

Maybe your mother should have made a lovely home for your father to want to come back to instead of pestering the man when he deserved a drink after working hard to provide for the family. controlling old cow
