Here’s some footage of lost Sesame Street fire safety segments from 1981 to 1982 sourced from news reports. It seems like these segments did air on television at one point but haven’t surfaced online due to their obscurity and also haven’t been released on home video as these segments doesn’t seem to appear in any online uploads of episodes from the thirteen seasons of the show as when the date of the segments were shown in the news reports. The first segment is one with Bob McGrath, two kids, and a firefighter. The second segment is one of Big Bird.
It’s possible this was made for the Sesame Street Fire Safety Project which was created in 1979 to educate children about various aspects of fire safety, from recognizing hot and cold objects to the proper way to escape from a fire-laden building, using characters from Sesame Street. According to the Muppet wiki, a special fire safety show aired in some southern states in September 1982 to educate adults about the program and effective ways of educating children on the topic, so maybe those segments were sourced from that, but the first segment is from April 12, 1981, and the second one is from March 11, 1982, but the news reports did mention it would be included in airings of episodes, so maybe they were shown again in the special fire safety show, who knows.
It’s also possible there’s likely more segments that aired from around that time that probably haven’t surfaced online. So until there’s more documentation of these segments and if more footage of them will surface, for now, these obscure pieces of Sesame Street history will remain a mystery.
