Dhokra is one of the oldest lost wax metal casting techniques practised in India. It is a 13 step process, practised by the Karmakar Caste in West Bengal.
The base figurine is meticulously prepared with wires made of bees wax. It is then covered with a thick layer of clay leaving an open hole on top. Molten metal is poured into the mould replacing the wax layer. Once the cast is removed, final finishing is done.
Craftmark members Dariyapur Dokra Artists Cooperative Industrial Society and Bankura Bikna Dokra Hastajata Kutir Shilpa Kalyan Samity are Cooperatives based out of Bardhaman and Bankura, respectively. They practice the unique craft of Dhokra.
