Kirk's vocals are a bit of an acquired taste, it's real bluesy rock sounding against the wall of slow doomy riffs. His cleans are awesome though, really wish he'd use them more often, the first couple of verses on Symmetry in White really showcase his cleans.

Yes it is. I just saw Crowbar live for the first time in April. It was unlike any metal show I have experienced before. Slow, deep, crushing, almost suffocating. It went beyond being audibly loud but instead to being physically loud. Your body could feel every single riff. I love their albums, but they don't capture the doom of the live shows

7:45. That sound.., the groove of the guitar/bass/drum tandem...The heavy rhythm riff is sludge metal in it’s essence. It’s written by singer/guitarist Kirk Windstein. Since you guys thought Crowbar was fire, I would encourage Corrosion of Conformity “Albatross.” COC’s singer/guitarist, Pepper Keenan, is another pioneer of sludge metal. Both Keenan and Windstein were among the founding members for the genre subgroup: Down. Down also included Phil Anselmo of Pantera on vocals. Down mixed sludge/groove metal, with southern rock, and blues. For my money, Down’s “NOLA” was the best metal album of 1995. “Stone the Crow” would be banger for you guys. Playlist.

Sludge = Black Sabbath + Black Flag (B-side of My War) It takes the heavy doomy elements from Sabbath, slow dark, bluesy riffs, and injects them with steroids and downers. Super heavy, downtuned, and often slow. THen you also have to have a little punk influence - that's what distinguishes sludge from doom, some bands have more of it (Eyehategod, Melvins) others have less, but it's still there (Crowbar)

Sludge is exactly what you stated (slow and heavy) but technically speaking, a key ingredient is the occasional use of faster hardcore/punk inspired breaks, this is what separates sludge metal from doom metal. Great examples of this element are used by bands like Eyehategod and Buzzov•en. Great review, stoked to see there are still open minded heads out there.
