There’s an interview with Henry Rollins where he points out how bands starting out assume Iron Man would be an easy cover and then they try that one part where they kick back into the main riff after the solo section and they realize how tight you have to be as a band to do that.

The interplay between Geezer and Tony during the solo sections, while Bill is simultaneously holding everything down while being a maniac with the groove, is a microcosm for the greatness of Sabbath. Add onto that the utterly epic and groundbreaking songwriting, which spawned arguably the most expansive genre in all of music, and the icon in Ozzy, and you have absolute legends, who at the time were black sheep (at least by the mainstream), but have slowly gotten their due over time. I am STILL baffled that an album like Master of Reality came out in 1971... Still one of the heaviest albums of all time.

I first heard Black Sabbath in 1971 when I was 11 years old. I had some older relatives who were really into them. Even at that tender young age, I could not believe what I was hearing. There are so many great bands from that era, but you can’t argue with the fact that they were groundbreaking. They took the blues and turned it on its head and Tony came up with some of the greatest riffs and rock history even to this day. My fave part is that last transition, the last segment, "just when u thought it couldn't get cooler," etc. The reaction channel "Vin and Sori" has the most amazing appreciation of "Fairies wear boots" where at the very end Vin really begins to groove on the cool-ass outro, and then they both just become increasingly gobsmacked as they realize the song's from NINETEEN SEVENTY, and it dawns on them how much Sabbath influenced their beloved Korn and Metallica and Iron Maiden, etc. Very satisfying!

The reason everyone focuses on the iconic riff is because it's a great shorthand for the whole song. They start with the riff, wander off in a different direction, return to the riff, wander off in yet another direction, and return to the riff. When someone is doing a movie, they're not going to play the entire song. But they can play just a few seconds of that riff, and the people who know Black Sabbath will remember the variety in the whole song.

Another word about Sabbath Bloody Sabbath: Tony had writers block for the first time ever, couldn't write a note. Someone gave them the idea of recording in a mansion known for supernatural events. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the song, just came to Tony. It's not normal. Blows your mind.

Symptom of the Universe, which you guys are already reviewed is the best rock song of all time. The first thrash riff ever followed by out Zeppling Zepplin in the middle and end with funkiest acoustic jam ever. They were amazing. I’m so grateful I saw them live. Sabbath is truly amazing

Bill Ward blazed trails. He gave everything to his drumming. Also, I would say the main guitar riff has something of a feeling of Beethoven's bombast.

Fun fact: Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were close personal friends with Robert Plant and John Bonham. They hung out together all the time, and it was actually Geezer and Tony who talked Robert and John into joining Led Zeppelin. I would never want to give up Sabbath or Zeppelin, but imagine if those four guys had formed a band together...

I want to add that, even once the base groove gets old, by the end of the song you're right back into it again because of how the switch-ups and perfect transitions build it up once more.

Bill Ward discovered big band jazz at like 7 years old. Count Bassie can change a mind at that age. LOL He was able to hear what the rest of the band was doing and find the drums to fill in the sound and make them sound full. He's also the reason they played so loud, so they could be hear over him beating the shit out of his kit like it was talking shit about his mom. 🤘🧙‍♂🤘
