Maybe the botanicals and creatures should be split into a 'nature' theme, the cars, boats and planes based off of real world vehicles could just be 'iconic vehicles', stuff from films could be under 'iconic movies'. This would leave the main icons theme for more general stuff like the typewriter, radio and the video game related stuff.

They also absolutely need to bring back $100-200 sets for ‘big’ themes. It seems like we only get sets like those for botanicals or modulars or whatever. Like, a $200 Barad-Dur that just included Sauron or something would be such a hit of a set, and so many more people would buy it.
@joevictor53

100% agree. In the mid-late 2010s, I was someone who would buy multiple £100-300 sets every year because they made lots of good stuff in that price range. Now it's like they've been bumping them all up in price so like you said, unless you're into the regular subthemes like botanicals, art, modulars, vehicles, etc, there's very little for you in that price range. I used to get stuff like the ferris wheel, the carousel, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, the Simpsons sets, etc. Nowadays, if you want a famous landmark set, it's £400-600. If you want a theme park ride, it's £350. Standalone IP sets like the Helicarrier or Ghostbusters Firehouse for under £300 aren't really a thing anymore. You can get stuff like Avengers tower and Rivendell for over £400. Same with Ideas. They used to release sets in the under £50 range like BTTF and Ghostbusters. Those were what got me back into Lego as an adult. Now they just want to go bigger and bigger with Ideas sets.

My main thing with the icons theme is that it seems to continue the trend of more and more prohibitively large and expensive sets filling the shelves at stores. I cannot remember a time pre icon theme where I could walk into a local target and half the shelf would be sets over 150$. My local stores never get the big UCS sets or modular buildings or 1:8 technic cars. Now they have captain americas shield, the icon cars, the giant space shuttle, the ecto 1, Optimus prime. Like it’s cool to see but also it’s weird walking into a generic retail store and seeing half the LEGO aisle be like borderline adult only due to price and scale.

I quite like the Icons theme. I understand there are too many different sets under the same theme, but the proposed solution on the video "Split up it in smaller themes" I don't think is a better solution. We will end up with 20, 30 different themes which will have only one product on the LEGO website or stores? This will be a marketing nightmare.

I literally never had any issues with building a LEGO set, and my experience since returning to the hobby about 3 years ago ranges from the Airbus Rescue Helicopter (hardest) through the Ornithopter, Concorde, Saturn V, Icons cars (Mustang, Porsche, Camaro) and Speed Champions cars to something like the latest version of Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter (easiest). There's something to be said and applauded about LEGO's ingenious instructions, just pay attention and you'll manage. Out of all these sets I've built, if I was to pick my favourite line, it would definitely be Icons, just because of how many one-of and otherwise completely unlikely sets it has given us. I'm quite certain if Icons was discontinued, we would simply lose this amazing variety. But perhaps there's a case to be made for alternative skill rating for different Icons sets, like perhaps 1-5 levels of difficulty?
@SilverDreamweaver
@SilverDreamweaver Ай бұрын
Yeah. I can't understand how people find any Lego build challenging. I really try to understand, but I just can't. Both from the simple instructions to the fact you're just putting shapes together. I don't see how Lego can be challenging to anyone, except for very, very, very young children.

On the subject of ratings and product lines... I think the "theme" is an outdated term and should be repurposed. Lego "Themes" are actually "product lines" and often not thematically connected at all. Icons being a prime example of that, but it's also true for themes like Ideas, Art, Education, BrickHeadz, Classic, Creator 3in1, Creator Expert, etc. A Lego set should be allowed to exist within a product line and a theme at the same time, thus easing the search process. For example, the 21325 Medieval Blacksmith from 2021 should both exist in the "Castle" theme and the "Ideas" product line. This is mostly an issue on sites like Bricklink and Brickset, but those sites try to stick to Legos standards, so Lego probably have to change first.

I also think that Icons is weird, some of the sets are literally kids' creator and castle sets, others are actually Star Wars or LOTR but they are big so they're marketed for adults😆kind of weird. Idk maybe they think adults won't buy Lego unless it's marketed as 18+ because they're ashamed of buying toys or something? I for one am certainly not the case, for example I prefer star wars scenes made into play sets with creative functions than the adult-targeted dioramas which are stupidly overpriced, have little to no minifigures and are there just for display with no play fumctions🤷‍♂️ They talk about 'discovering the kid in yourself' but kind of limit it themselves if you know what I mean.

You're thinking like a consumer/customer. What the LEGO group is doing with Icons is drawing in as many *new* customers as possible. TLG knows you, as an AFOL, will buy their sets no matter how they're branded, but every new customer (or more likely someone coming out of their dark ages) might be a potential long term repeat customer who will get the bug after their first Icons set. THAT'S the point of Icons branding.

Honestly I feel like they're risking turning away new people coming out of their dark ages because of their greed. When I got back into Lego, it was sets like Lego Cuusoo/Ideas BTTF and Ghostbusters that interested me. Those were £35-45 back then and that was expensive for me for a "kids' hobby" that I only spent £15-20 on previously. If I was coming out of my dark ages now, I'd feel like there's very little to appeal to me in my price range. I'm okay spending £100-300 on sets now but I wouldn't have been if I was just getting back into Lego.

Age ratings have never made sense for LEGO sets. I think they should adopt a complexity-rating system: -Option #1: Rate each set with zero to five bricks (zero being something like Duplo, and five bricks being something like the Eiffel Tower) -Option #2: Label each set with levels from "Beginner" to "Expert" -Option #3: Give each set a short description, from "Anyone can build" to "Complex and Challenging"

I agree that they should create sub themes for Icons. I personally think they should be based on what the build is, for example: Icons Vehicles Icons Flowers Icons Modular Buildings And so on. Then they should intruduce a complexity rating for all Icons sets, clearly visible on the box as well on the web shop. The rating could be done as a scale of maybe 1-5 bricks, or 1-10 bricks. The more bricks, the higher the complexity of the build is

What annoys me the most is when themes or categorizations are introduced and then again dropped before they could be really established thoughout the range of products. The Icons moniker has at least brought some level of consistency. Nevertheless, IMHO there was no need to abandon the Creator Expert name which could be used easily for cars, modular buildings and iconic vessels such as the Titanic or Concorde. In addition to that LEGO could have introduced some category for movie icons and famous items such as the Pacman machine or the gaming consoles. Overlap between themes is unavoidable, but I see your point that lumping all into one category doesn´t help at all.

I guess you meant Icons, and not Ideas :) I don't see any contradiction, I think the theme has way too many very different sets squeezed in, the best would be to discontinue Icons and create a few, more specific themes. So in some cases, they belong to more specific themes, introducing more themes would just add clutter imho, ie. making a Dune catagory just for the Ornithopter.

@@deadso for me discontinuing a theme doesn't have much to do with the sets released under that label previously, I literally meant the theme itself. I didn't mean to create subthemes based on each and every topic, but rather a categorization that helps differentiating the sets for casual adult builders, and experienced adult builders. Sets like the Dune Ornithopter or the Radio could easily fit in the old "Creator Expert" theme, and things like Barad-Dur or Artemis could go in the "for adults" theme.

I have never personally run into this problem where a Lego set was hard to build, its always been relaxing and quite easy. To clarify i have built both the Lamborghini SIAN FKP 37 and the Ferrari DAYTONA SP3. I think that the "18+" title is used on some sets where it is not needed like in the Chevrolet camaro Z28, but then again its Lego so they probably want to sell their sets to the right audience, so maybe they use the "18+" as a scare to show that it requires some building experience to build it.

My 2 cents. Lego could print the empty backgrounds different colours and graphics to represent a category while keeping them under one theme.

I’m of the opinion “never change a winning team”. I mean you’re not wrong, but it seems that Lego designers can ‘get away’ with rather a lot under the Icons umbrella. I’d be hesitant to break it up and introduce more rules (“this line has to be about X”.

18+ sets could do with a Lego weed set. They got other flowers. Stoner theme, parents basement set or the clerk's shop with Jay and silent Bob mini figs? Icons bong, it has pneumatic functions.

I don't mind the Icons theme as a theme, but it does seem to have a broad range of difficulty levels. Age appropriateness and difficulty level are different things. Why not have both on 18+ sets? That way new builders can find an entry point, and experienced builders can find a challenge.

Personally, I'd like to go back to a time when Lego sets were capable of being held in one hand or two so you can enjoy and admire what you've made while ensuring playability. Sure, accuracy is great, but I always thought of Lego as a means to showcase one's ingenuity and creativity with limited parts. They should give the creators of speed champions and technic a shot at Icons since they seem to be more innovative with their part usage and size parameters so that Lego could ensure that Icons becomes more profitable to all Lego enthusiasts.

If TLG had released the SLS by itself (and maybe the tower separately) but made it to-scale with the Saturn V, I feel like many more people would be interested in it. I already have 14 other launch vehicles that are 1:110, having one that is 1:160 is pretty much useless for me since I cannot display them together. Regarding the Icons/ 18+ labels, if they actually used the age as a complexity rating it could work, but a dedicated complexity scale would be a lot better and more intuitive.

I think Icons is a great theme but I think the 18+ rating having nothing to deal with difficulty is really stupid. Thing is that age rating is a problem in other themes as well such as Technic, Ideas, Star Wars... almost everywhere it's used it feels inconsistent when compared to every other age rating.
@zxql_
@zxql_ Ай бұрын
Completely agree that 18+ rating on ALL icons sets makes no sense whatsoever. Holiday Main Street and Rivendell in the same category by all means, meanwhile difficulty / intricacy rating is on opposite ends of the spectrum. If both "Icons" and "18+" mean that these sets suit adults for one reason or the other (be it nostalgia, displayability, difficulty or something else entirely) they should add a separate complexity rating.

Great video, liked it. One question that is off topic, I have built the BMW m1000rr set and while its mostly great I noticed one thing. Gear one (the gear in which the engine runs fastest at constant wheel spin) is very stiff. I've built it twice, everything is correct so I am very confused as to why there us so much friction in that gear. Do you have any idea why this could be? I'm sure I'm not the only one. When assembling I even took extra care to minimise friction between gears by spacing them a little. No difference.

I think the biggest issue here is that the Icons theme is currently an "anything goes" kind of theme, which while likely better for Lego's end, can be a consumer nightmare on the other as there's no filtering for any subthemes. I think the best idea here would be (as you said) to keep all the sets under the Icons theme, but add subgenres to the theme either through age ratings or categorically or split the theme entirely.

Since coming back to Lego, I've ended up primarily buying Icons sets; the Galaxy Explorer, Land Rover Defender and Optimus Prime. None of them have seemed difficult to build (the most interesting builds have ended up being the speed champions sets I've had). It does feel like it's a bit of a testing ground for Lego to make things that just don't fit or play with IPs without being too commited to a line. Does become confusing though when they gain traction and start adding such as botanicals being a theme within a theme now.

Maybe they should have Icons Basic, Icons and Icons Expert/Extreme, or use something similar to Bandai's Gundam difficulty system. High Grade, Real Grade, Master Garde and Prefect Grade (There is also SD, Entry Gade, Fullmechanis, Re-Born 100 Master Grade Extreme, Master Garde SD and Metal Build).

Lego clearly wants to appeal to adult collectors and something people are more okay with collecting as adults are model kits. They already do these difficulty ratings so I don't see why Lego is just lumping everything together as 18+

I feel the 18+ on the box for most but not all of these sets applies to the pricing as they're aimed primarily at adults rather than most kids despite the difficulty level. The only real positive I can see with Icons is it gives Lego a one off excuse to make stand alone sets rather than offer a whole range of sets or starting up an entire theme. Lord of the Rings only real exception so far has been the Brickhead packs. While both models are great, pretty much skipping on both as The Icons Lambo is going to be revealed pretty soon.

I bought Barad- Dur yesterday. Haven't built it yet. But why do people KEEP saying LOTR is back? It's not. 2 of the actual sets are under ICONS line not LOTR theme. All we have is brickheads for cheaper sets. Until they come out and fully announce that the LOTR theme is back and actual produce more cheaper play sets the theme is not back imo. Also the line at the LEGO store was insane. It was at least 3 times longer than the Rivendel line last year.

thank you for this review. I've been broke for a long time and I could only afford the most special sets. I've been eyeing the concorde since it got released and I will finally be able to afford it for my birthday at the end of the month. I was kind of bummed when the Artemis set came out, because it seemed like ANOTHER set aimed at my weakness, but after this review, I'm glad that I can skip it. I'm really into the space stuff, but have never been able to afford the good star wars sets. I absolutely LOVED Saturn V and the Space shuttle for the construction techniques and functions. But that after seeing the inside of that Artemis build... yeesh. I think I'll go back to looking at Technic.

I hate thew new KZfaq layout! It makes it harder to get to and scan comments. That said, great video! I have always thought of Icons as "Eye Candy". When you walk into a Lego store Icons has its own section and I like the presentation of variety...it always feels like a journey of discovery. I don't think I am troubled much by the age rating. they can be deceiving at best (Ducati Panigale V4 gearbox!!).
