The 2016 Lotus Evora 400 is the fastest production Lotus road car ever. With a supercharged 3.5L V6 making 400 HP and a lightweight, strong chassis with a much improved interior, the Evora 400 can hit 60 mph from a dig in 4.1 seconds, and top out at 186 mph. And it sounds absolutely orchestral while doing it.

the car market is turning into complete shit. ford is out there selling drivers cars and even giving you tuning parts as options but my german brands are downsizing their brains (still putting V12s into 3 ton cars of course, regulations?) and the next Mercedes SLR was announced to get a V6.

+MarkHinds I get what you're saying but that's not what the nsx was about. it was a light, simple car with an amazing chassis and was actually pretty underpowered. it was a driver's car. reviewers say the new nsx is numb with technology. the steering is sketchy at high speeds and fit the money you can get out right faster cars.

Thanks for the fun video, Matt.I stumbled on your review only after test driving a 400. Driving it opened my eyes. I noticed the stability while trail braking just as you did. I liked the smooth power delivery, the control feel, even the view through the windshield, and the car fit me physically like a glove. I was shocked to find I liked the sum of the package better than than any of the obvious competitors. It was a major and very pleasant surprise. I was shopping for a Porsche of course and considering a Grand Sport too, samples of both of which I'd driven several times.The original field included the 4C and F Type R , AMG GTS, a C2S or a Grand Sport. I hadn't even considered the Lotus until I saw it at a dealership and asked for a test drive figuring" what the hell?" Now that Geely has controlling interest, I think a Lotus is a safer buy and that pushed me over the edge. I get mine next week. Your review was influential in backing up my impressions of the 400. It's great looking in the metal and a really special thing to drive. Yay Lotus! I can't wait to take delivery.

The Evora is a pretty thing, I wish it was 20k cheaper and it would officially be fairly accessible. Plus in the states you have crazy exclusivity. This new version seems to have come into its own......

Ok, short rant, sort of. I know that the Jaguar F-type V6s is always touted as the best sounding v6 out today (a lot of people claiming ever) but honestly, I think that this has it beat. Hearing this throaty a sound coming from a v6 is amazing; the top end has the right kind of sound too. I've seen people say its sort of like a modern Alfa Busso and I really hear that at the top end. Fifteen years ago it was hard to find a v6 that really sounded good, not just good for a v6 but as its own engine note. It seems like they usually end up like the new ATS-V and CTS Vsport, where the engine makes great power and got the job done, but still sounded more like you were wringing out a chevy malibu than driving a sports car. With engines like this, the Jag V6s, and the Alfa Quadrifoglio it seems like there is definitely a future full of great sounding cars, even if regulations mean we see fewer and fewer V8s, V10s, and V12s. Just my two cents though.

+Arrtus TV Lotus stopped using turbos after the last generation Esprit (1993-2002). The Exige S in 2006 used a Supercharger. The original Evora S from 2010 uses almost exactly the same supercharged V6 engine as the Evora 400 in this video.

+Arrtus TV you're glad as they're making less power because of it? I'm not sure what's so great- supercharger whine instead of turbo exhaust? It's a less efficient way of making power, and if lotus is about lightweight efficient performance, using an inefficient supercharger is antithetical. This car isn't about drag racing, so the initial "coming on boost" won't be missed. If you're gonna say turbo lag.. you're clearly living in a sadly turbo-less world.

The Lotus suspension and other higher end cars is why I give a lot of aftermarket coil setups a tough time. That suspension was supple yet supplied a lot of grip; that is something that can be achieved on every car and is really what most people want. So people installing expensive coils that beat them up on the street are doing their owners a disservice and perpetuating the myth that a 'performance suspension' must beat the crap out of your body.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 8 жыл бұрын
+Brodey Dover I agree. My Mustang's chassis has been reinforced heavily, making it significantly more rigid than stock, which means I can run softer springs and have a good ride while allowing that suspension to do its work in the corners.

You described it like I felt about the previous Evora. Having been through the interior, under-panneling, suspension, engine, etc. I can say they designed the chassis like a race car for the street. The aluminum monocoque and underpanneling are awesome, with the interior hiding a mini "rollcage". The car can easily be daily driven, we have horrible pot holes and steep parking lot inclines, and even though I cringed hitting little bumps, the suspension soaks everything up. I've never felt a more comfortable ride that handles and feels like the Evora. The only thing the previous model was lacking was power, at 400RWHP(turbo) the car felt quick enough, with the chassis wanting more, no unsettling wheel spin even from a dig.

Not the first time we've heard a reviewer say the Evora is comfortable! Rewind back to Top Gear when they got a hold of it. I'm actually really glad Lotus made the Evora. As much as I love the go-karts they produce (the Elise and Exige), once the Esprit V8 took a hault, there was a lingering absence for their line up in my opinion. The Evora didn't exactly fill the shoes of the Esprit in terms of top speed, but it is so refined! I use to see the same silver one every day back in my home town. It's just really nice to look at. I still think it's funny it has back seats as well! Glad it got another great review!

Pretty similar to Jeremy Clarksons Review from the predecessor Evora. They improved the interior on the new one and upgraded the power which were his own complaints about it. But arent McPhersons the one who change Camber while loading up and the double wishbone the ones who maintain the camber through a corner?
@mattclose1439
@mattclose1439 8 жыл бұрын
+Epik76 I was under the same impression. Double wishbone maintains the same camber throughout the suspension travel where McPherson will gain and loose camber when compressed/extended.

Actually, most McPherson strut designs actually loose camber with body roll. With double wishbones, you can use a shorter upper arm to make it gain camber.

You're not gonna get bored of that engine note, and if you HAVE to stick it on some speed restricted motorway/autoroute/autobahn/expressway you can silence the exhaust so it doesn't become a drone. Used to drive a naturally aspirated V6, and thought that sounded good, but boy this is leagues ahead. Looks spacious inside yet small on the outside very clever. Fingers crossed that it sells well, something this accomplished deserves the opportunity.

Matt, I like your reviews, but I have to say - this has to be the most honest review I've ever seen from you. I can tell you genuinely enjoyed the car, as she is truly greater than the sum of her parts... ...which are easily sourced on pretty much every major continent except Antarctica...for now.

If you check out Doug demuro's channel you'll see he just got a pre owned vantage and its in the shop every other day. Do not get an Aston if you want to use it more than 3 times a week. I think you should consider a ghibli though it'll be cheaper than a used granturismo and it sounds just as good.

+Ian Soderlund Yeah thats the guy from jalopnik.com. I actually have a 2009 v8 vantage (lowered on coil overs, and ADV1 rims, and exhaust) and i've gotten his same scretching noise coming around corners (only when the car has been sitting for a long time). I am crossing my fingers it doesn't get as bad as his..... I have been starting to think about my next car and have been really considering the lotus evora s (sport racer) or the 400 later on.... What do you think then about the evora 400 or s vs a pre owned GTR?

+Chaseme95 because he's descending down the hill, on a road with no shoulder. Centered in the lane is the best place to be to be seen from a long distance back. Also notice how Matt changed lanes to pass. That's the other reason, as riding near the edge invites close, dangerous passing from most people.

TheHesK9 It's likely outdated and no offense Lotus, but it's better for them to focus their ressources on everything and just buy the engine, it saves them money and reputation.
@TheHesK9
@TheHesK9 8 жыл бұрын
+Armin K well the idea was a 4.8 litre V8 producing 612bhp and revving up to 9000rpm. It would also be used as a 3.6 V6 by taking 2 cylinders off and a 2.4 4-cylinder for the Elise. It would also be 80kg lighter than the Lexus V8
@armink9686
@armink9686 8 жыл бұрын
TheHesK9 That sounds amazing, but that's all marketing talk, I mean sure it is possible but Lotus isn't exactly the wealthiest car maker and it doesn't have a huge parent company. It can either go really well and they could even sell their engines or go really bad and make Lotus go bust.

Because they have "every right to the road that a car does." At least that's probably what they'll tell you. Which they do, but it's super irritating when they seemingly make it harder to pass by being in the middle of the road while going 10 mph. That guy is just putting his own life in danger of any cars driving fast but aren't as cautious or courteous as Matt.
