what i sometimes do with my sidechain, especially for music which is focused on kickbass, i create a "ghost" track of my kick by duplicating the original. it is not going into the master and plays throughout the whole track on every beat. all my sidechain routing goes to that. so if there are some parts without the kick, the sidechained elements will always sound the same.

Hello friend,🙋🏻‍♂️ your videos are very inspiring 👍 I had a question about leveling, I don't have a monitoring speaker, can I do leveling with headphones only?🤔
@lotustunesacademy
@lotustunesacademy 9 ай бұрын
100% yes! :) Just set your headphone output to a comfortable level. It shouldn't feel too loud or too quiet.

Great video! Is there a reason you don't use plugins like shaperbox or LFOTool for doing the classic sidechain pumping effect? I like the ease of using shaperbox, but I'm wondering if there are advantages of using the oldschool compressor setup I'm missing? :)
@mvandell
@mvandell 9 ай бұрын
One good reason for it is the control that a compressor offers and the particular sound that different compressors offer. That's two reasons really 😅
@lotustunesacademy
@lotustunesacademy 9 ай бұрын
The compressor offers you a few more functions like attack and release, which allow you to shape the signal more to the kick. BUT in all honesty, I also love using LFO Tool, especially cause it's quite quick and simple to use. It's just that third party plugins like LFO tool / shaperbox sometimes result in a bit of latency. Stick with what you're comfortable with :)

I'd suggest one sets up the session properly upon adding each track - name, colour, group/bus - this would eliminate all that time spent on Step 1

Do you still add reverb & delay in the mixing stage even if stems were already exported with a creative delay / reverb already in them?
@lotustunesacademy
@lotustunesacademy 9 ай бұрын
If the stems already have built in reverb / delay, then I'll pay attention to how they blend in the mix. If they feel too dry, I'll add a little more using the return channels. Most of the time I end up leaving them as they are.

So i have a question. You have the full song in like 8 bars and then applying the techniques you are teaching. Should i applied it in the same way; in a full 16 bar? and after that arranging the track?
@axeljanmaat
@axeljanmaat 9 ай бұрын
If I may make this into a forum-like thread: You could always do the mixing stuff once you have your “song parts” in sight (intro, main grooves, breaks etc etc) so everything is well balanced. That would make arranging afterwards a breeze I think
@bbeest3148
@bbeest3148 9 ай бұрын
@@axeljanmaat oke merci, for now I'll do some mixing while arranging, but have to do it when it finish. If I going to do it in a 16 and then arranging, is maybe easier for me.

I don’t want to be that guy but I’m 6:18 into this video and I am wondering why you would level before doing eq on each track. From my experience your leveling will change dramatically if you eq after leveling. For example my kick is always set to -10db on the master as it is the most important, just as you said. If I level this to -10db, and follow up with an eq to remove unnecessary frequencies, the level might change to -8db. This creates a headroom issue down the line which would cause me to need to check my levels a second time. What is your opinion here?
@KitetsuDesigns
@KitetsuDesigns 2 ай бұрын
I see now that you are addressing this in a way at 27:15 into the video. I still am in the wheelhouse that believes you should be doing eq on each element first then getting your kick to -10db and then raising the elements from - inf to their relative positioning with your eyes closed. Hopefully this can help improve your workflow as well 😎

EQ can cause phasing, which in the lowend might result with a louder signal, correct. So EQ -> Level is the way to go ;)
