Always loved Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, but in the pantheon of amazing musicians and artists who have never been able to scratch 2 cents together, or have the luck of being acquainted with great promoters or other great musicians to go somewhere with their career, I'd say, 'definitely not over-rated'. Lots of great artists out there who nobody will ever regard, and frankly, Sir Lou was a bit high on himself and lousy with fans.

Lou Gives the ambiance of the NY-Jersey-Philly area in rock music that makes me want to be right there in the city, maybe dreaming I'd get out of there one day, but not really wanting to.....like the early Springsteen and very few others. This is the music that makes me feel passion and nostalgia all wrapped up in neon lights reflecting off the puddles on the pavement on a crisp autumn night. Music is the best mode of traveling in the mind. Anyone relate to what I just shhhhhpewed out ? lol

I believe that what is so "artful" about Lou Reed's music is that he combines the poetry of words with music rather than limiting the words by the music! Perhaps the opposite trend has taken over most of the modern music. Yes, perhaps RAP has moved in to create a minimal semblance for what Lou and his kind created long ago! And to this of course there is a strong, essential element of a New Orleans' Rhythms & Blues! ie. Dr. John etc. So very often "modern" music is more powerful on the instrumental aspect leaving words so far behind! Lou reminds us where rock n' roll began!!!
