Mick for me was the core of simple minds.. brilliant musician… many say Derek was the must have in the band but I really liked Malcolm foster on bass.. in Mick’s case he was never replaced and never could be replaced.. just my opinion

100% totally agree with you Darren. He was Simple minds in my eyes. Once he left after street fighting years. That was it, basically. Jim knew it and Charlie basically struggled without his input to the musical composer. The music not the same anymore. Always said he was the heart. And with out the heart, it dies. Just looking back at his talent on many Simple minds videos your could hear that vibrant sound from his accordan style coming from his keyboard. As why back in the early 80s they were at their pinnacle form. Not 100% sure. So don't count me on it. The time when Happy Mondays came out. Mick wanted music style to change with the new trend that was in. Obviously Jim reacted against. Band members will always disagree. Mick resigned probably had enough. And unfortunately Derek was sacked due to punctuality, I think within rehearsals. Remember Jim and Charlie are the key members. Simple minds Ltd. Basically 50% each being directors. Therefore, Mick and Derek being session players. But they did both input musical arrangements. As why I believe its their music as much as Jim and Charlie's

Right regarding Mick, but definitely wrong regarding Derek. For me once Mick and Derek went it was a decline.

Charlie Burchill didn't speak to Mick for 9yrs after he left. That's how much Charlie knew Mick's loss would have on the band. And he was right. SM died when Mick left.

I always get a lump in my throat when I hear Mick's opening performance of this... the one he did in Rotterdam 85 in particular... just awesome! He made the sound so HUGE!

Kudos to Mick MacNeil, brilliant as always. And the Prague Philharmonic are as tight as anything on this performance making it sound like their 'Star Tune''.

Mick is a great player but Billy Currie from Ultravox has to be the best
@widespoon25992 жыл бұрын
I can't make a blanket statement like that. Mick's playing was a huge influence on my musical path, especially his sound from '79 - '82. I would have to include Billy Currie and Dave Formula in that.

It is all good. From second one - I still wish after all these years there comes a collaboration with Simple Minds again. If only it was for one song. It would be the outstanding new song on a new album, I can tell from miles away. If I had one wish, musicallywise, it woudl be this. Over 30 years after you left, I haven't forgotten your tunes. I never will.
