According to Slash's autobiography, he wasn't any happier about GN'R's, or more specifically Axl's antics either.
@eyellgeteven9928
@eyellgeteven9928 7 жыл бұрын
I would bet that it pissed him off more than just about anybody...I can just imagine being psyched for a show and Axl fucks it up by not showing up, or doing his cry baby "This show is over!" bullshit during the third song. Slash may have been drunk at the time, but I think he was wanting to do good shows for the fans and forever he will be associated with Axl's bullshit.
@MetalMike38
@MetalMike38 7 жыл бұрын
Eyellgeteven It was one of the reasons he left GN'R, Axl had been showing up at the venue late and going on stage even later for over a year before the Guns/Metallica tour. Slash specifically points out the amount of money that Axl wasted by going on late leading to union fees, and hosting a bunch of ridiculously expensive Theme parties backstage. That tour earned Metallica a lot of money, but Guns barely made anything. After the riot in Montreal, Slash couldn't bring himself to look anyone in Metallica in the eyes cause it was so embarrassing.

Slash wasn’t all innocent. Yes, Axl was wrong during the tour, but Slash was also a junkie who couldn’t control his habits, something that also drove Axl crazy. In my opinion, it was both their fault that GNR broke up.

In his book, Slash said that he and Duff McKagan were all hyped up on creating what would eventually become "Chinese Democracy" they both had been writing rock songs which would bring the band back to what they were on "Appetite for destruction" But when they presented their stuff to Axl, he dismissed it. So Slash and Duff decided to release it themselves, Slash as "it's five o 'clock somewhere" with Snakepit and Duff as "Believe in me" both albums quickly taking off because of GNR fans recognizing what they were: Kick ass Rock records. Axl of course noticed that too and quickly called Slash and Duff back in trying to have the songs re-recorded with him singing and released under the GNR banner. Both Slash and Duff told him to fuck off and left the band soon after.
@NotoriousYeshi
@NotoriousYeshi 7 жыл бұрын
You're half right. The material Axl rejected(he didn't reject everything, but most of it) was the It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere material. Slash then got pissed, took it back and recorded, mastered and mixed it in like 3 and a half weeks. When Axl wanted some of the material back it was too late, so that added to the tension between the two. Believe in Me was music that Duff recorded in various places throughout the UYI tour and released it right after the tour ended. he also briefly toured it, but by then he was too bloated and fucked up, and his band mates were too green so it quickly fell apart.

I also love that in Slash's book he talked about how Axl would throw these lavish after-parties with ridiculous themes (like Mexican fiesta or Roman orgy) and he was so embarrassed because he wanted to look cool in front of Metallica and Axl was just blowing it left and right.

I was at the infamous Montreal show on that tour. That afternoon and evening showed pretty much everything Jason is referring to here...... Metallica: Hit the stage on time...put on a solid first half of their show. James gets burned by the pyrotechnic. Even though inside, the other 3 band members must have been freaking out, they came out and addressed the crowd, promising to come back to town to finish their show (they did, BTW, return to play a show at the Forum a few months later, with tickets being ridiculously cheap) GnR: They could have saved the day....but that was not in their DNA. Took FOREVER to start their set, as the crowd sweltered in the heat, and got more and more agitated. Then, like 5 songs into their lacklustre set, Axl has a hissy fit and tells people to "get their f'n money back", then storms off the stage. Metallica = professional.....GnR = clowns

He nails it. I've seen Metallica several times and was lucky enough to see them with Jason one time (should have been more! But I digress). I was supposed see GNR once, and they were a no show. It wasn't surprising but still such a dick move. So many people show up for you and you can't even bother to show up... Luckily it was at festival so not all was lost. But I will never try and go see them again. Fool me once and all that stuff ;-). I'll always miss Jason in Metallica. Nothing but the best to him! ❤️

Agreed. I'm 37. I never liked GnR. Appetite was a great record. It was new and fresh and Mtv pushed the hell out of them. I remember hearing Use your Illusion for the first time, though. I was pissed off at how bad it was. 30 songs and over 20 of them suck ass. You Could Be Mine is the only song on that album I really love. That's why I never bought the whole myth that you had to be "fucked up" to write great music.

@@iamthem.a.n.middleagednerd1053 Axl seemed like a horrible human being. I don't know if he's any better these days but I do hope he's had a dose of humble pie along the way. I can't stand people that are looking down or disrespectful to the people that have brought them where they are. Along with just pissing away money over no doubt ridiculous crap is just vile. I met Lars that time I saw them play with Jason backstage (I worked security) and almost met the others as well but they were already getting changed and getting ready. so Lars came back out by himself a second time. Just to tell me that they couldn't come out. I always thought that was so nice of him. And watching Jason in this interview I now understand, why they didn't come out. Punctuality and respect to their fans and timeslot. I get it. I would have loved to have met them too though ♥️

They hit on a lot of this in the binge and purge documentary. One of the funniest scenes is James making fun of Axel backstage, getting his voice ready. I don’t think Metallica liked Guns N’ Roses at all to say the least. They came from two completely different perspectives on music and fame. And I think I speak for all Metallica fans by saying we all love Jason. He quite literally represented the Fanbase inside the band and that’s something special.

Nowadays when this type of music is absolutely depleted, when the old bands are lying on old glory and the new bands are following old schemes and discover nothing new, when they applaud you if you are good imitator, when the music business is dead and one can not make money by selling records and can not even play live since 2020, who cares if you are powerful or not?

True words. This guy had it going on. They had I all over Metallica at the time and would have finished them off if Axl didn't implode. Don't get me wrong, different music but shared similar crowds and fans. Loved them both but it was an evolution .

don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Trujillo's fan since Infectious Grooves times, but Jason, we miss you in Metallica.

He said the exact same thing when VH1 did Metallica, behind the music

I met Jason at meet-n-greet back in 1998 and he was exactly what he described about GnR, he was cold, distant, and looking down, though he was much shorter than me :) Unlike him, James who showed up shortly after, was soulful, thoughtful, warm and cool and the same time. For instance, my comment that James' previously burnt arm had almost no scars, he replied: 'No, the scar is right here', pointing on his wedding ring on that arm :) I wonder why Jason who came from such a big, close (seems to be), full family has such a neurotic, unstable, basically not cool character. So much presumed shortsighted opinions. It is in a water, I guess :)
