I was looking at some documentary where Armstrong said he forgot that he had recorded 'Hello Dolly'. And everywhere he would go to do a gig, people from the audience would yell out - 'Hello Dolly!' So one day he asked his band what is this 'Hello Dolly', and he had to be reminded that he had recorded it on an Album. He then had to go back and learn the lyrics because he forgot about it. It became one of his bigger hits. :)

I saw him perform in person when I was 12. My father and I were right in front by the mic. Right after he performed his opening song, my father said, "Play the Wifinpoof Song". OK, says Satch, and does! A great memory, and still clear as a bell after 60 years.

To be able to ad-lib like that you 1) Need to know the tune amazingly well 2) you need to know and trust your bandmates super duper well and 3) you need to be an amazing musician, Louis Armstrong and friends are most certainly that! AMAZING!

Hearing anything of Mr.Armstrong makes me feel so much more grateful to be alive it fills me with purpose meaningfulness and pure joy it’s so outrageous but yet so inspiring and beautiful that some one like Louis who came from such a rough childhood and past is able to not only pick themselves but universally communicate this gorgeousity with so many what more could you ask for in a human being
