Darkly funny thing. We all are taking risks until we check out. The sheep may come together on Sundays for football, desperately competing to fit in , perhaps helped move with a buddies truck , but are delusional that it makes a difference. Dirt. We all go in it. Poor or king. My worms might be the same as yours My experience is no better or worse but i at least can laugh with understanding my end. .

Louis C.K. was a self admittedly average comic for 20 years until something clicked. He suddenly understood what he wanted to say with his art and it worked. 20 years. Now, people try and after 5 years, quit, writing a big post on social media like a some post retirement Grammy speech. But there are still people out there who do things because they truly love it and when you find those pages, it shows.

its pretty simple really, be funny on stage as a comedian and you will do ok. Its people that follow Joe Rogans claim to fame that have issues like this where they basically want all the notoriety without actually being a top class comedian and killing it in standup specials. They know what they need to do but seem to do everything EXCEPT make good stand up specials

7:50 So refreshing to hear this. All the things people urge us to do for 'success' can just as easily lead to nothing at all, but what's the alternative? Churning out other people's safe mediocre ideas and regretting it 40 years later? At least if we do our own thing then whatever the outcome we can be a bit more proud of how we lived our life.

Man he just articulated what I've thought about for a while. the "algorithm" is social control. If you get people to think "these types of things is what will get me seen" then whoever controls the algorithm controls the collective consciousness.... Also think big tech likes "the algorithm" because it's a great scapegoat. When people ask "why did you guys feature certain content over other content?" they just get to blame "the algorithm". Nevermind who is programing the algorithm.

Same (except for the boat building and keto lol) and that’s why I think Louie is kind of underestimating the sophistication of The Algorithm. Like yes it can absolutely shape your tastes in one direction or the other but mostly it’s simply really good at predicting which videos you’re likely to enjoy based on the kinds of videos you spend the most time watching. If the videos that go massively viral tend to be trash it’s because the average person’s taste is maybe not so great. (Tim Dillon made this point about people who hated Dane Cook when his career blew up: you shouldn’t be mad at Dane, you should be mad at everyone who bought a ticket.)

Louis already had enough fans that have followed him for years. He doesn’t need algorithms. He has life long fans that share his work to other friends and that’s how he started many years ago. I remember a friend brought a VHS or DVD tape of Louis to a house party about 20 years ago. He then became my favorite comedian and everyone else’s in the room. Then, it was shared by mouth and conversation. Then we went to shows, every NYC show he had. We saw him at shows.. We watched, ‘Lucky Louis” As fans, you follow the artistry because it’s part of one’s humor. His humor has chemistry with his fans. He then began creating shows and more content and that kept building. I met Louis quickly and his friends. I met his friends. It was years and years of Louis. I was in tears to see him back. That’s how it builds. Fortunately, Louis still has committed fans that separate the art from the whatever Bs that he doesn’t get to defend. It hurt him financially, I bet but fans weren’t going anywhere especially over something that ridiculous and over blown from 1994. Pfft. He also explained it well. We wanted the humor, the artistry, the mind of Louis back. It’s a win win for fans and for Louis. Luckily, he didn’t start during the whole internet craze. He is locked in! Funny, the friend that brought that VHS to the party is now an upcoming actor. Talent recognizes talent and that’s how it was shared to us. No matter what people say, he is right next to George Carlin (Richard, Eddie Murphy and Chapelle are great too) and will always be historically FYI I am a straight Latina woman and a Louis fan. I went to a recent show and women were there. Some of us work in the mental health field. We shared that with Louis. Not all circumstances are what it appears in the media.

Great insights and a life lesson from Louis CK. Another illustration that in this day and age, comics are a more reliable source of wisdom than political leaders. He actually give a life lesson that goes well beyond aspiring comics. Below a certain age, nobody's immune to the pressure of social media, and is forced to decide whether to play the game - even minimally, and resist by walking away from these platforms. Broadly speaking, the necessity to strike a balance between individual goals and bending to social pressure is nothing new, but Louis CK's update helps put in perspective the role played by social media. Throughout history, It's never been easy to negotiate between personal aspirations and family or peer pressure. But it's even harder to do so in the eye of social media.

Love to hear this man reflect. Im really glad he doesnt have a podcast though, there are just too many of em now and many of them just revolve around guest apperances from various famous friends talling the same stories, like a late night show.. It feels redundant. And to me he is kinda of above the podcast format, or to the side of it, whatever you like. What i do think would be cool though, is if he did an hour long reflection of life/comedy/ storytelling once a year. Kind of like a speciel, maybe kinda like the interview format, less punchliney than standup, with more insight that funnyness. People who can tell stories without visual aides are captivating, and he is one of those people. That is something i think a lot of people would enjoy.

You’ll see 💩 like, “THIS PERSON MUST BE CANCELLED” & then it’ll be pathetic Twitch drama that most people couldn’t care for. The algorithm sometimes creates a cesspool of fake people & frauds. I’d rather be true to myself than be somebody else, especially if that somebody else is dictated by a dumb, drama incentivising robot incapable of understanding actual human emotion.

I agree that comedy has changed. I thought it was due to the pandemic and comics not being able to workout for two years, or the overly sensitive audiences. But I never considered social media being a distraction from the art. Interesting perspective indeed.

This stuff is where his comedy comes from - like he writes a mini thesis in his mind of pure truth, like this, then distills this background thinking into 2 or 3 sentences

Theo is the first person I thought of when he was talking about someone who was getting better and then fell off because of popularity based on social media

Is he curating his content to fit social media? He's not funny anymore?

@@ogivignjevic I went and saw him live and his set was more of a live podcast than standup. I used to be excited for him to progress into a polished comedian but it doesn't seem like that's his goal. Of course, he's well within his rights to stick to being a successful traveling podcaster but as a fan of standup it was disappointing
