I used to sell the heck out of this VHS tape in the 1990s, holy cow - it's missing the early Prima segments solo on Sullivan - but this is basically the famous Copa Show, they came over from the Copa and were going back for the later show, but this is when they were the hottest act in NYC, before Sullivan's musical acts were forced to lip-sync.

@@leonardodalongisland Hi, hello - not sure why myself, but for some reason the acts on his show were all live in the 50s, but the bands you see in the 60s The Doors, Stones, Beach Boys all lip-synced. Mama Cass famously says "que the tape" on the Mamas and Papas segment ... try finding Beat Club episodes - they were live the first year in B&W (later on tape in colour) , and they are terrific.

Keely Smith is the best. Seriously. There has never been a singer with a purer tone, better control, and greater sense of humor and pathos. Never. In the history of singing. You could put up modern singers (Lady Gaga comes to mind as a solid vocalist), classical singers (Edith Piaf is one of the greats), or anything in between (Christina Aguilera's vocal gymnastics, Mariah Carey's stratospheric highs, Whitney Houston's soul). None of them comes CLOSE to Keely Smith's purity and perfection. She wasn't flashy. She wasn't trying to contort her voice or pull off some sort of tricks (like the breathy quirks of Alanis Morissette or Dolores O'Riordan, or, more recently, the growly-vibrato of singers like Billie Eilish). She sang from the depths of her being, and every note was pure and perfect. Ballads? Check. Goofy improv? Check. Tight harmonies? Check. Complex jazz intervals? Check. No one before or since could do what she did with that languid, clarion tone she had. Best of all time. No exaggeration... and no possible argument.
