Dungeons & Dragons Expands Beyond the Gothic Horror in Curse of Strahdwith Van Richten’s Guide to RavenloftD&D Brings Multiple Horror Genres to (Un)Life Including Slasher Horror, Macabre Fairy Tale, and Zombie Apocalypse.
One of the most popular adventures published by D&D in the last few yearswas Curse of Strahd which begins when characters are pulled by creeping mists in to a land called Barovia. But Strahd’s domain is just one of the many Domains of Dread that make up the horror-themed setting of Ravenloft. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenlof trefreshes the setting by giving Dungeon Masters descriptions of more than 30 Domains of Dread beyond Barovia as well as the tools to create their own horrific stories, including details on each domain’s Darklord, a ready-to-play adventure, new monsters, lineages and sub-classes. Be afraid for Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft to pull D&D fans into the Mists on May 18. “I’m a huge fan of all things horror, so it was an absolute thrill to frame this book around bringing frightening elements like mummy lords, cosmic terrors, and urban legends to more D&D tables,” said Wes Schneider, senior game designer and lead designer of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. “Working with exciting new voices in horror and visual artists like D&D concept artist Shawn Wood was essential to make sure we’re updating the aesthetic for today’s fans while staying true to the roots of Ravenloft.”The correspondence of Rudolph Van Richten and other heroes of Ravenloft, like Ezmerelda d’Avenir and the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins, introduce a new generation of monster hunters to the Lands of the Mists. Some of the Domains of Dread might feel eerily familiar to fans such as Lamordia, which explores the horror of experimentation on creating undead beings from deceased body parts by Dr. Viktra Mordenheim. Other horrors include the surreal, fairytale masquerades of Dementlieu; treachery in the war-torn rain forests of Kalakeri; and the endless zombie hordes of Falkovnia. Van Richten’s Guide includes rules and advice for DMs to create custom domains and Darklordsby portraying established horror tropes or whatever special new blend of terror they can imagine. Players can create more terrifying characters with Dark Gifts that provide roleplaying ties tothe Domains of Dread by bestowing benefits that may have a deadly cost. With Van Richten’s Guide, players can also roll upa dhampir who’s been created by a vampire, a hexblood descended from a hag, or a reborn who’s been brought back from the dead. Two new subclasses further flesh out the options with the College of Spirits for bards and the Undead pact for warlocks, as well as new backgrounds to explore and trinkets to collect. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft features a cover by Anna Podedworna available everywhere and an alternate cover by Scott M. Fischer only available through game stores. The mists beckon on May 18, 2021!

@@justanotherdayinthelife9841 I treated it less of a remove curse and more of a banishment spell to remove the savage wolf spirit that bonded to the PC soul. PCs have to make Wisdom checks to prevent themselves from showing wolfish behavior such as timidness around large groups of humans, turning in circles before they sit or lay down. Or sleeping like a dog snuggle up to someone else in the party group at night. In all, the infected PC starts to act like an over protective guard dog to his adventuring party.

Now imagine that all of the infected are actually a company of ex gloomstalker rangers and the Loup Garou is the commanding officer, but when they are not shifted they hunt bandits, poachers and corrupt lawmen ( like Robin Hood, only more militant). When shifted they could use military style tactics as well as pack hunting tactics ( as by then, all forms of team combat would be instinctual for them to use, thus negating any issues they would have with performing complex humanesque creature actions) to spice up combat. Imagine this coming from the GM's mouth: " The spike you remove from your calf when you yank your leg from the Apache style foot trap, reveals itself to be a carved 4 inch long wolf tooth coated in rotten meat scented saliva. You remember seeing one of the werewolves without one of it's canine teeth as it snarled at you last night." That would make ANY player get a cold chill of realization that those creatures fight on a whole different level ( and would also provide an attack of opportunity for the loup garou or other werewolves and a flanking point in game).

I like the new take on lycanthropes like we've seen it already with the Wereravens in Candlekeep. Giving them Regeneration instead of Immunity to "Standard" Damage feels... right. I also give my lycanthropes a Resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks that aren't silvered. And I use a slightly variation of the rules from 3.5e to cure lycanthropy in my running Curse of Strahd campaign. The new rules for the Loup Garou sound very promising.

A little film making critique: if you two are in the same room, and speaking to each other, please put in an Establing Shot showing both of you in the same frame. The cutting back and forth between two people looking into each other's eyes is very jarring. Think of how in interviews, they will occasionally cut to a shot of both people together. The Establing Shot makes the human brain happy.

In a few of the later trans phase of AD&D2e moving into 3.5e Ravenloft novels, Strahd had to deal with multiple werewolf family packs trying to take control of his Domain and fight each other over hunting and herd grazing rights. A pack of werewolves only infected a non family member if they lost one too many from their base pack or need some cannon folder for a very dangerous up coming battle. Cause the Land can only support so many Packs of Wolves. My old gaming shop groups also use to run White Wolf/ World of Darkness: Vampire & Werewolf, so we always gave werebeasts a few low levels of spellcaster classes for role playing reasons. So when we ran werewolves, there is no such thing as a .. lone wolf, and any experience adventure or local in werewolf area just .. knows .. that werewolves watch over .. their .. flock & herds, and the wolves eat first. Hope you have a good weekend, and the wolves stay at bay.

@@basementmadetapes Over the pass thirty years I seen D&D played, most people just treat monsters as video game XP. Before D&D switch from AD&D2e to D&D3e, we had the Complete Humanoid hand book, so the shop allow players to R.P. monsters. We had an Open Campaign where if someone used your PC as a npc they have to give the PC 1/4th XP from that adventure & that PC is not allowed to be killed off. We had one murder hobo play a red dragon for a few games and after wards started to treat npcs in a better light, and had a fit that one group ..punk.. killed of HIS dragon as a chump with no tactics involved. Due to PC creating a magic item or some form of craft which require down time, had players run multiple characters from different parts of the setting. Over the years the shop's campaign setting felt " natural " grown with history and value in meaning. New players to the shop setting were told, .. everyone .. is Political aligned. a.) The bandits you killed off lived in the neighboring barony and their relatives were living of the spoils with their local lord getting kickbacks. Now you just started a blood feud and the baron is not happy about the lost of the kickbacks and was trying to undermine his neighboring rival control over his domain. b.) Werewolves control wild wolves from killing off wide swaths of herds and keep the goblin numbers down in the local forest. Wolves only hunt the weakest members of the herds, nobles want to hunt the trophy bucks. No werewolves, goblin worgs push the local wolves out into the farm land killing off the peasants' herds, no trophy deer game hunting, and now the area has a goblin threat. Cause .. there .. ARE .. monsters in the forest, people NEED their Lord's protection ! c.) If you kill one dragon, hope one of it's family members do not find you parents' house, your favorite inn, or already scared a village you are traveling to, and the villagers Will greet the adventures in a .. very .. welcoming manner. i.) You are under arrest in the name of the crown. ii.) Uhmm, is the inn keeper trying to get me as drunk as he can ? iii.) How do you disarm & armor a man ? Send three pretty young women into the same room with him when he is drunk. Cause the dragon is waiting.

@@krispalermo8133 well I wish I'd played this game since I was a kid. But I'm just a writer, and I approach the game thru that lense. Every character matters to someone. There are no bags of hit points in my writing. There's only layers of motivations, circumstance. Even for a monster. I ain't hating on hp tho. Obviously a game needs some measure. I just don't like how reductive it can become.

@@basementmadetapes On the writer side, .. 1.) Campaign setting & novel series : Dragonlance The novels use to get the setting going were the " campaign daily notes " on how the play testers were playing the game. The reason why Strum was killed by the blue dragon general in the novel was cause he was killed in game play. The novelist was not making up the way each character behaved, he was going off the records and from watching the player act out the PC in dialog. Hp, .. from a story point of view, " Superman is as strong as needed for the plot to move forward." 2.) Years ago I wrote a gothic horror Call of Cthulhu ist like story involving a dock crane unloading house. Basic a short quick mini D&D game dealing with .. night terrors, with PC between 1st to 5th level of young adults. Just normal people who had to run for their lives one night. Ability score stats such as " Wisdom " to track how long it takes till the PC goes into .. panic .. mode. What I like about dice is, that it allows the story's actions to take on a life of it's own. 3.) Classic campaign building and other artistic inspiration, i.) AD&D2e Complete Book of Villains, " how to write villains and story hooks for and adventure & campaign setting, along with charts for random dice rolls to get personality motivations for NPC." Back in the 1990's I have heard a few college students wish they had a book cliff noted in regarding writing antagonists. Over all the bpook is just a fun quick read. ii.) AD&D2e Ravenloft three volume set of Van Richten monstrous compendium. They just cover everything in AD&D2e game system play regarding classic monsters in NPC behavior, dice modifier adjustments, character class levels, and pages on how to write a gothic story and how to put one together step by step. Even if you don't play RPGs, it is just a fun read. The way it is write, it is like the author is .. talking .. directly to you. Since each volume holds three to four different monster books, it can take all night to read one volume. Just something to look around on, they are more than a little costly for more recent prints.

In my setting if you are cursed it can be removed but not if you are born with it. Also in my setting most therianthrope forms (excluding were rats) were gifts by selune to druids, and some hags decided "but what if we made evil versions" creating the cursed version. Also you could easily change remove so that curses not set specifically by the bestow curse spell requires a spell check vs a dc of like 10+creature CR to remove. This means you'll for sure remove it soon, but now theres a chance of failure immediately, so you may have to burn more spell slots

This sounds exactly like the Werewolves in my last campaign. Thats awesome that others were stoked enough about this that it made its way through Ravenloft. Because I am unable to resist, it was in a murder mystery where the local constable (a gnome wizard) welcomes the players coming as fellow dispatched constables to a dinner in which he secretly slips the magic word to enter his workshop to speak after the dinner of a "foulness" growing (as the reason the players were dispatched was because every full moon theres more and more slain villagers and yet no communication from their constable). This is where he gets poisoned to death. Now its a murder mystery fo real. The gnome had an automagical force quarantine bubble encircle the village at his triggering death which stopped the killer from escaping but locked everyone in there with the killer(s). Turned out it was a werewolf cult with a vast network of tunnels running to the underdark where the plot was launched as an attack from a rival nation to use biological warfare. The players total failure to stop the real alpha lead to the escape of the cult into the countryside when the bubble ran out of juice was hilarious in the making. I applaud my players because it was so much fun failing together lololol think Clue and the Thing in a tiny medieval village lol.

In a campaign I ran a few years ago, I houseruled Lycanthropes so that their curse is an ancient one and because of that pretty much unbreakable (similarly how resurrecting a 10.000 year old mummy to life is not really viable). I made werewolves tougher and at the same time made their weaknesses more pronounced (you could identify a werewolf by giving them a silver coin onto their bare hand...). Seems like the Loup Garou is gonna be pretty much what I want werewolves to be in my games. :D

For what it's worth I run Remove Curse differently, especially for things like mummy's rot and lycanthropy. I’ve only played 5e, but I do feel like lycanthropes got the shaft hard compared to vampires. Glad to see that they’re being given such a major overhaul. I have two ways I’d fix Remove Curse, or at least nerf it enough that curses actually matter. First, the spell would require a rare and costly material component that is consumed by the casting, possibly requiring a specific item for a specific type of curse. Second, it would require either an ability check by the caster or a saving throw by the cursed creature, DC determined by how powerful the curse is and how long the target has been cursed. I’d still keep the spell 3rd level, though; a relatively inexperienced caster can *attempt* to remove a powerful curse, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to succeed.

Interesting idea for a secret society/druid group in Ravenloft based on the European witch trials and folklore. So there are stories, and even a witch trial which the transcript of is read on my channel, of good werewolves that hunt witches and demons. What about a secret group of infected who've figured out how to control some of their change and use it for good. Add a group hunting them just because werewolf equals evil or them having to take precautions because they lose control under the moon and theres a lot of potential.

" good werewolves that hunt witches & demons, .." That sounds like White Wolf/ World of Darkness: Vampire & Werewolf. Dark of the New Moon, plot. On every new moon for three nights a pack of werewolves groups up and tries to out do each other in bloody murderous pranks. Full moon, just out right attacks you, they take you down through brute strength. Waxing & waning moon, stalks and slow bleeds you through nips and they want to run you down in a panic chase. They hunt you as wolves hunt deer. New moons, they make a game out of death. They will tar & feather you first, then the " Great Chicken Hunt " can begin.

Bad news, his human side is .. afraid .. of heights. So he was played for laughs. Since being an alcoholic, in tiger form he would go for a pitcher of wine before blood and binge drink. If he was angry & hungry despite being regarded as evil, he would start eating a horse before a human, although he did love games of .. cat & mouse, but his drinking problem always gets the best of him. Then he wakes up nude in a tree screaming for help, " Someone get me down from here !" Hope you have a good weekend, and not find anyone in a tree calling for help.

My issue with lycanthropy that make me like the original rule is RAW you lose control of your character and HAVE to be chaotic evil. I hate that. It's dumb. In most other fantasy, INCLUDING other were creatures in adventure books are other alignments and still mostly function normally. But that's just me. This is way my friends and I made a lineage for Lycans. Custom Lineage Option Lycanthrope. Lycanthrope Traits You have the following facial traits. Creature Type. You are Humanoid. Size. You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you gain this lineage. Speed. You walking speed is 30 feet. Ancestral Legacy. If you replace a race with this lineage, you can keep the following elements of that race: any skill proficiencies you gained from it and climbing, flying, or swimming speed you gained from it. If you don't keep any of those elements or choose this lineage at character creation, you gain proficiency in two skills of your choice. Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness as shades of grey. Keen Sense. You have advantage on Wisdom (Preception) checks involving Sight or Hearing. Change Shape. You can as a action transform into a hybrid form of your Lycanthrope lineage. In that from you gain Lycanthrope statistics shown in the DMG and Monster Manual such as speed, traits, and actions that don't involve equipment. In addition, at 5th level, you can polymorph in to the best of your Lycanthrope lineage. Its statistics, other then its size and speed, are the same as in your hybrid form. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying isn't transformed. You revert to its humanoid form if it dies.

Makes me sad, that Lycanthropy has become a Curse, rather than a disease. That said, not everyone thinks Lycanthropes are fun, or wants to have their character ruined by a DM who thinks it's fun to make you a villain or NPC, with a "Make a Single Saving throw, or it's over.", there are other worse systems for those sorts of things, like 3.X or Pathfinder 1. But, I do understand the frustration for those DM's who enjoy that sort of play, then again, Werecreatures are not really threats beyond level 5 PCs, for most things (Obviously changing now with Ravenloft) And you don't get Remove Curse until level 5 (At the earliest) That said, if you want to be a werewolf that can't just be cured, RAW, if your parents were Werewolves, only the spell Wish can remove the curse.

If your parents were nature born werewolves, then your DM is letting you play a monster ? White Wolf/World of Darkness, is a campaign setting set in the modern world where you can RPG werewolves and vampires. Also AD&D2e Ravenlof has Van Richten guides to run vampire/ werebeast - wolf npc in gothic style monster games with RP notes on how to run the personalities of those beings. Side note on natural real life wolves/ coyotes, unless they are pack up in full strength to hunt large game, they go after field mice, rats, and other small game. So anytime you see a large dog or wolf hunting rats in a farmer's field by a home stead, or see a few wolves play sheepdog around herd animals. You just might be dealing with werewolves in the area. As stated in AD&D2e from close to thirty years ago, PC are superheroes and no one wants their superhero to get killed. Then there is this thing about .. balance game play, so ... DM that run games of .. run or die .. or does TPK too often is not fun to be around. As a few people state, " Why can't werewolves become more dangerous after 5th level?' Cause the early books state monsters can't gain class levels to threaten PC superheroes and their teenage egos. Ran a few games that got PC lost in the forest for a week cause a pack of werewolves spook their horses. Humans can't cat/ dog nap, werewolves being .. well .. wolves can dog nap. Humans will drop from exhaustion or go nuts if they don't get REM sleep. Good news, they were not .. murderous, just thieves, and you can only rob the dead once. Hope you have a good weekend, and have fun with the puppies.

NOTE the player is new to D&D and didn't know how much larger an Annis Hag is compared to the Green hag the party has already met. she and her character therefore thought they had a chance of soloing an Annis Hag (CR6) while still only a level 2 halfling rogue

AD&D2e, Ravenloft: Van Richten guide to Werebeasts, in one passage it was stated if a werewbeast gets overly emotional in human form it could be trigger into shape changing, such as death over a love one, birth, or even a wedding. So we started one campaign where one of the PC's was getting married and their bride turn into a werewolf. The PC groom manage to out wrestle her and stay on her back long enough without getting bite so the rest of the wedding party threw all their robes on them to tie her up with the robes. " Well, not all women show their true nature on the first day of marriage." Her mother was one of the .. good time girls .. when she was younger, so the bride was a natural born and remove curse will not help her. But she did become the best field rat catcher/ eater in the village. As a plot hook, other alpha males cause trouble as they pass through to .. court .. her, along with monster hunter adventures looking for spell components, and random monsters that are tough enough to hunt werewolves for sport. Since my game shop also played White Wolf/ World of Darkness: Vampire & Werewolf, we took our Ravenlof games to a whole new level. Then again we also ran a game out of Mordentshire where we played more or less Welsh fishermen in a low magic, little horror, non adventure type play. Where we stayed away from haunted houses, and went for a bottle of rum after seeing any Call of Cthulhu sea monsters. Just normal everyday people that hunted wolves that come out of the eastern river forest during late fall and early winter, hunting snakes and large port rats, very small sea monster, with plenty of friendly drunken bar fights. Hope you have a good weekend, and all your Ravenlof mist fill adventures be survivable.

A young cursed werewolf is an unthinking beast running on untrained instincts. Over time the human side will start show more dog/ wolf like behavior and cunning. b.) A natural born werewolf will use full human tactics in wolf form to it advantage, if they are not a brute that seeks glory in strait up battle. They will be more than happy to .. spook .. your horse into a wild run to throw you. Or wait till your pants are down.

That’s also, i think, what differentiates the Gothic Horror of Ravenloft compared to ordinary High Fantasy. Forgotten realms ? Yeah werewolves get to be those annoying Malar cultists. Nothing that would keep adventurers beyond lvl 5 on their toes. This, however ? Terrifying.

1. The whole point is to make curses, yes including cursed items, more of an ordeal. If you have a cleric of 5th level or higher, curses essentially mean nothing because they're prepared casters, meaning all they need is a long rest to prepare that spell, then they just tap you and you're done. 2. I don't know how your games play, but in all of my games I've encountered ONE whole cursed item, and for plot reasons the DM has ruled its curse can't be removed with the spell and we need to go on a quest for it. 3. It's a homebrew mechanic, which I came up with with the help of my own D&D group. The only people who have to use it are the ones who made it in the first place.
