When all is said and done, Brian Wilson will be regarded as a composer and writer on a scale with Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. One of the greatest American musicians ever in any genre.

Brian is so sweet and pure of heart despite all his years of mental illness, bad medications, manipulating managers, showbiz pressure, money and fans - and still his message of love and mercy is the most powerful thing I have heard since John Lennon. "I was sittin' in a crummy movie with my hands on my chin, Oh the violence that occurs seems like we never win." America has become the Walmart of real, exported and simulated violence. We have killed our own souls and don't even know it. What a mean, mean world we have created - and seem to have NO CLUE what has happened.
@michaelh29359 жыл бұрын
jsmcguireIII I had the same thoughts going through my head last night walking home from a late screening of Love & Mercy. The song & it's message is all the more poignant in the context of Wilson's life & it gives me great optimism and happiness to know he survived all of that turmoil with this message intact.

@craigmitchell55018 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree, brian went thru some serious shit, eugene landy was the devil, to finally get sober after a decade of decline would have been traumatizing to someone as sensitive as brian, and then to be had by a svengali shiester, evil,a manipulitive guy like that, who was over medicating him in a very, very real way, and keeping him away from his family who wouldnt have allowed such malpractice, and to put his names on brians songs, that movie was amazing, its impossible to overstate what a piece of shit eugene landy was--u should check out a book called " catch a wave:the rise, fall, and redemption of brian wilson" by peter ai es carlin

I mean, it's good that the movie has exposed you to his music but nobody really cares that it brought you here unless you're going to expand on your comment by discussing the actual song and what or what it doesn't mean to you now that you've discovered it, otherwise you're basically just neglecting the artist's work by specifying that you're only here because of a movie you saw.

@ms85967 жыл бұрын
Yes. Brian used the Wrecking Crew in the studio while the rest of the band was on tour. It's well chronicled. It's been well chronicled for ages. If there is an insinuation that it all was phony, the band (except Mike Love who couldn't play any instruments and is a nasaly singer) IS playing instruments on all of their early records, plus many of the songs on Pet Sounds and SMiLE, along with the Wrecking Crew. After Brian went into seclusion, and they moved the studio into his house, then bought Brother Studios, the individual Beach Boys resumed playing the bulk of the instruments.

This song is sort of timeless. I mean, it could have been the flip-side of "Surfer Girl" back in the 60s, but could also have been a 2016 song just as easily because it has that distinctive Beach Boys harmony and romantic feel. I don't understand why it wasn't a bigger hit. One of Brian's best! Glenn Frey passed away today, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and I would like to dedicate this beautiful song them both. Thanks.

Back in the 1980's, I would have been way too cool and alternative to like this song and the heartfelt lyrics. But now, it makes me cry. I bet that all of those cool, 27 year old, forever young rockers (and some older ones, too, cut down before their time) in heaven would tell us all that love and mercy are simply The COOLEST, and Brian Wilson is incredibly gutsy for stating it so plainly. John Lennon was also one of those "unrealistic, sappy" and gutsy kind of guys for asking us all to imagine living life in peace...
