This is the true story of Elizabeth Siddal, who was to establish her place in history as the the model for Ophelia, a famous painting John Everett Millais.
She would become the favourite model for a group of artists called the Pre-Raphaelites.
This group roamed London looking for girls to be the models for their paintings. When Elizabeth with her striking red hair was spotted, her world changed overnight.
Being the model for Ophelia earned her more than an entire years wages as a milliner's apprentice.
She very soon had an affair with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the leading members of the group; but this affair was turbulent...jealousy and opiate use caused the lovers to self destruct. Even after Elizabeth was dead, her presence haunted Gabriel continuously until his own death years later from constant drug and alcohol abuse.

Those loud musical breaks in some of these crime shows.., impossible to watch after you get kids to sleep.. the light gentle music not only adds to the mysterious stories but gives it a lil spooky kick. Love the voice too.. you can hear the empathy and feel the stories intensely.. love it 😍

What a beautiful tribute to the model of Ophelia. I've always loved that painting. I didn't realise there was such a social history of a 19th century art scene behind it.... and all of the beautiful portraits to each character including the drug bottles... Another amazing documentary

To be completely honest this is probably the third time that I'm hearing this specific story, I've always been fascinated by the paintings representating the story of Ophelia since I was a little girl and hearing the story of the real model of one of my favourite paintings makes me love and appreciate it even more, and the paintings you show on the video! I was introduced to the painting of her as Ophelia in my high school literature class and immediately recognized it, 4 years or so later. I find it really beautiful. I'm sad to find out that posing for it utimately did so much harm to her, but I'm glad to have heard her story. A version of her lives on in all who can admire the paintings of her.

I've always found the painting memorable too. It never occurred to me though that they used models outside of doing portraits. I'll definitely never be able to look at this painting again without picturing Lizzie in that cold bathtub.

I can’t believe she suffered for 5 hours in a bathtub with horrid water from the Thames.... definitely adds more depth to these paintings knowing the story of the people in them. Thank you.

Oh my goodness. Even with all the pain, suffering, and uncertainty in our world today, this moved me more than anything has in a very long time. Especially Lizzie's poem. I had a huge lump in my throat as you read it. Thank you and please continue to bring stories to life.

I too had a print of Ophelia and The Lady of Shalott. I lost these when I broke up with my partner who kept them. I had no idea about Elizabeth and I feel terribly sad for her. Thank you Oddie for keeping her story and memory alive.

He hits the mark because he's going to narrate this program no matter who tries to stop him.What you do best you are going to regardless of obstacles.Even if you have to do it for free.Its called "destiny". Oh Oddie! You have made my day with this. I have always loved the Pre-Raphaelites above all other artist groups. There was something so vital about their work, and so tragic about so many of their personal stories. I was familiar with Rossetti and Elizabeth as a couple, and her sad ending...but did not know Rossetti had buried his manuscript with her and later retrieved it. These were difficult times for women who dared to dream of a future for themselves beyond the constraints of societal expectations, yet they could see that some were able to make it. To be a recognized icon of the time, while desiring to be seen as an artist in her own right must have been frustrating. Having a Family be dependent on your looks staying in vogue put a great responsibility on her as well. There were toxic substances all over in this age of discovery, green was a popular interior colour, attained by the use of arsenic, just to name one. These exposures coupled with a melancholy temperament and the likelihood of consumption most likely added to the romantic ideal surrounding her image. Thank you for telling her story with your usual sensitivity, and for reading her poem with such feeling. I wonder if, surrounded by a community of highly creative, slightly mad, and high strung artists, she ever realized how famous her own face and name would become. I have seen many of the originals, and they truly are exquisite and jewel like. This was a very fitting tribute to her life and trials. 🖤🇨🇦

Pamela Meckley I’m sorry I missed this for so long. Actually, I did a lot of writing, mostly songs and poetry as I was a singer for a number of years, and an actress as well. Perhaps it was my time in theatre, speaking the words of great writers that began my love of both reading and writingI love words, as clumsy as they can be, because they can call up a feeling, a longing, the sudden vibrant recollection of a moment long past. Lizzie has been in my life for as long as I can remember. Now I’m an artist I understand her so much more. They were like bottled lightning, the entire group...magickal people living in difficult times. Their work is completely timeless...precious jewels. Lizzie’s art is exquisite and I think it’s perfect that now she is being recognised more and more for her own gifts as an artist, as well as a muse. As we understand her character and possibly her illnesses more, we appreciate her art more also. Oddie,you have achieved the true essence of Victorian Gothic Romance here...Rosetti has always been a personal favorite of mine and his doomed life with Lizzie made his story and hers all the much emotionally richer to hear and savor...This was a classic rendition of suffering for Art,not for the sake of the art,but for the sake of the artist's soul...

rolf sinkgraven the drugs are more dangerous? Back then, you could buy opium over the counter. It was considered to be a cure, or at least relieve symptoms, for almost every ailment. Of course, cure or not, it certainly made people feel much better! And there was no stigma, doctors said it was ok...so there were a lot of addicts. Probably lots of overdoses and deaths as well.

Chainsaw Kitten Drugs are much more dangerous now if only because they used to be profesionally made and sterile, while now they’re street drugs cut with all kinds of dodgy adulterants, they’re also much more expensive now and illegal, leading to a destructive lifestyle. The weird things is, drug per se, even opiates, cause no serious medical problems, the lifestyle does.

toobalkain not so sure there were any government agencies monitoring and regulating drug manufacturing back in the Victorian times, but I will agree with you that the lifestyle causes most of the problems drug users have, at least with opiates.....opiates used “responsibly” are not dangerous. Other drugs are, though. Cocaine, for example, very bad for the heart. However, drugs like opiates worked the same back then as they do now. Addiction was just as ugly. Tolerance builds quickly, one needs more and more, withdrawal is hell on earth, and people overdosed.

Chainsaw Kitten There was no FDA, obviously, but like with other products, competition forced manufacturers to do a decent job + there was no incentive to cut drugs. Tolerance does build rather quick but in most cases it seems to plateau at some point, same as with painkillers today, receptors may have a physical limit of excitability. I would agree that cocaine tends to wreak havoc on users, though some people seem to be able to use stimulants responsibly and with opiates this appears to be even more common. It’s a small sample, obv., but William Halsted, p.ex., father of modern surgery, was a dope addict all his life but still managed to lead a stable, productive life as did many writers and other artists of the time. On the other hand, Mughal emperors in India were notorious opium smokers and often barely functional as a result, it’s hard to say whether unlimited supply is beneficial or detrimental, it appears to help if addict has a meaningful, productive occupation.

I too am fascinated by the pre raphaelites. Having seen Rossetti's La Ghirlsndata[1873] at the Dahesh Museum at 601 Fifth Avenue, 48th St. in NewYork My life was changed. I was moved to tears by its beauty. The layers of paint and the intensity of the colors was almost too much to bear. No print could ever do it justice. I then proceed to visit the auction houses and furnish my new home with aesthetic black and gold furniture from England and some from America. Oddie what a thrill it was to hear you speak of your love from this period. I have found a kindred spirit in you. That you so much.

Oh Oddie! I don't think I have words to express how this story affected me. As a nurse I am grieved to my core when I hear of drug addiction, depression, suicide. After the still-born delivery, I'm sure she had PTSD. Even today people are just as judgmental. I am continually shocked when I read the mean things people say. Whatever happened to manners? This lovely woman was critized for red hair, being too thin, having limbs that were too long... she was afraid. I want to put my arms around her and love her. Alas, I was born too late. However, I give love to all around me. As is right. Thanks for sharing, Oddie!

I get the feeling she had no support after the loss of her child - plus Rossetti's womanising coupled with her drug dependency, would have destroyed her self confidence.

BRAVO once Again SIR. I must tell you as a musician l have been told l have an obsession with an lrish guitarist named RORY GALLAGHER; who was born in 1948, & passed away sadly in 1995. He lived for his art; never married, & died of overwork. He was never a big drinker, didn’t even smoke, & had a liver transplant in 1995. I am mentioning this as l have heaps of portraits & prints ( still rolled up as yours are! ) He had a highly acidic blood condition. Passed away of pneumonia in hospital after spending 6 weeks in intensive care. When you mentioned you had a lot of prints still rolled up in tubes, l smiled to myself thinking what amazing passion some people have about what they do. My passion is of course is music, & along with ‘my RORY’ the GREAT BEETHOVEN; whose portrait was given to me as a gift from a friend. Thank you for your site, & the great passion you have. 🎸💚🌟🇦🇺🌟

This is by far, the saddest 😢 story you have told to date. One moment of true happiness, cruelly ripped from her, when her child was stillborn. Her last poem/prayer also tugs at the heartstrings.

I think her addiction to laudinum and quick downward spiral to her own death after the death of her baby are directly related. She was already unwell, and dependant....... Laudinum numbs, and stillbirth is so horriffic to recover from, you never really do. I understand why she went tgecway she did. I see postpartum psychosis and extreme grief, made better only by mind numbing agents. Poor woman, poor poor woman.

Extremely well done, as all of your wonderful work! Could you perhaps do a video on Oscar Wilde? His life was fairly tragic, his parents were also quite the characters themselves! He has been a fascination of mine for decades, ever since I read the first pages of The Picture of Dorian Gray. I’ve read and own many biographies about him, very interesting personality.

The Lady of Shalott....that painting has hung in my room for 35 years. Such a haunting painting and story. It's on my bucket list to visit the Tate Museum in London to see the original. I didn't realize the original Ophelia was at Tate, as well. Just icing on the cake when I make it over there. Loved this upload! Thanks so much for sharing!!

I just found this channel today and I wonder why I had never known about it before. Oddie you did an amazing job telling the story behind the painting as well as about Lizzie and Gabriel, it is truly tragic and worth knowing about. I would love to listen to you narrating audio books, especially those in historical settings. 👍👍👍👍 Edit: I appreciate the silence in the background and the longer pauses, it lets the serious and sad nature of every event sink in. I do wish that Lizzie could have lived a better quality of life.

The last poem she wrote, touched my heart. It's sad that even those days, people could find themselves addicted to drugs. Also sad, is to find men were not traditional, any more than some of them are today. She was subjected to abuse, and he took advantage of her. Sad she had a still born . She may have felt much guilt with the death, having been addicted to the Laudanum. That was widely used as a pain killer, and shouldn't have been prescribed to someone with pneumonia. Of course, medication was was far from being researched in those days. How far we have come. The one thing I don't understand, is how they went to France and still managed to act like high society? Still, a great story. Thank you. I have watched many, and will continue to do so.

When you ask about how they were able to function in high society in France, I assume you are referring to their drug addiction? I can relate to you my own story. I had a back injury and became dependent on a high dosage of Oxycontin. I never took more than was prescribed, but your body still becomes addicted. After the first few days of a pleasant, buzzed feeling, that high goes away. I was able to drive, work, and live my life the same way I had before. The only difference was that if I missed a dose, I would start to go into withdrawal, which is horrible. Most likely once Gabriel & Lizzie developed a tolerance to the drugs, they would still be able to function as normal. Only when they wouldn't be able to get the drugs would the withdrawal begin. And eventually the damage done by the drugs and related conditions would begin to take their toll. But an otherwise young, healthy person can mask certain drug addictions alarmingly well. I was fortunately able to wean off the Oxycontin after back surgery, but it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm saddened that Lizzie and Gabriel were not able to do the same.

I wonder if she had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It can be associated with a tall and thin frame and also causes chronic pain that could have pushed her towards laudanum. It also can cause gastroparesis which is often mistaken for an eating disorder. Many people with EDS require feeding tubes in order to prevent starvation and malnutrition.

I love Dante Gabriel Rosetti. One of my favorite artists of all time. In fact I committed the ultimate library sin but I saw the painting in a text book in high school of St. George and Princess Sabra and it reminded me of my husband and me. I still have it this to this day. ❤️

That cemetery is on my bucket list. I've always wanted to see it my oldest child has agreed to go with me. But I live in the states and use a wheelchair now a days. So glad that we are finally talking about and shining a light on this creative woman, thank you for this vid! :)) I give talks about 'Ophelia' at Tate and while many people know & love the painting, her own story is often hidden. I also made a vlog about her and her own artwork and was amazed by how many of her drawings have never been exhibition. For anyone lucky enough to be/live in Canberra right now, there's a huge Pre-Raphaelite exhibition on and I hear many of Elizabeth Siddal's own works of art are on display inc her beautiful drawings for example, many of which have likely never seen the light of day.

Oddie...l have just finished my first painting in 25 years, and my first in watercolour. It’s a huge step for me, I have been stymied by disabilities. I chose to celebrate today, by watching this video again. Elizabeth has been a constant inspiration, and your work, your videos, have been my companions through an awful lot. I found it odd how Elizabeth Siddal seemed to strike different people as looking so different. For example one person described her eyes as a luminous brown agate color and another as greenish blue "un-sparkling "eyes. Her hair was described as anything from deep red to golden and she was described as both beautiful and unattractive.. it seems more like people saw what they wanted to see in her. As I write this I have Elizabeth framed as Ophelia above my bed, and Waterhouse’s the lady of shallot ,above my dresser. I have Ophelia by Waterhouse. I also have a few Mucha's and a favorite Caravaggio... but that's neither here nor there. My point is that I am also a fan of pre-Raphaelite art.

I have an insight to what you mentioned.. any police or detective that have interviewed witnesses of a crime always comes across this phenomenon. Let's say there are 5 people viewing the exact same crime at the same time. They all will have a different take on what actually happened.. one person noticed cloths, still another person that is short would comment on how tall this person was, while still another person that's very tall would comment on how short they were....we all filter the world differently. ..

I agree with Bill Coyne and I just want to state one more thing. The old saying: "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" can be true. There are people who are very critical always, who may not be happy with themselves and therefore are critical of others. There are very positive people who look at others as beautiful because of their positivism. Beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
