This is the sound of Stock/Aitken/Waterman. They were huge producers in the 80s, and while we had some hits in the US, they were massive in the UK. Stateside, we know them from Bananarama, Dead Or Alive, and Kylie Minogue's early hits. To really dive into Rick Astley, one should check out Cry for Help, The Ones You Love, Hopelessly, and Keep Singing.

Stock Aitken and Waterman were huge producers back in the 80s and 90s. They grabbed young pop singers and rocketed them to fame, writing a lot of the songs too. Such stars as Kylie Minogue, Samantha Fox and Rick were in their stable. They just had the 'formula' for pop songs.
@hlc1975

I was hoping someone was going to mention this. I was a kid at that time, The Hit Factory totally dominated the charts. They introduced new artists (e.g Kylie, Rick Astley) and took already popular ones to new heights (eg Bananarama). Their songs all had a very familiar, infectious sound and you could pretty much just interchange the singers. Lots of the artists went on to greater success afterwards, but SAW definitely built their foundations.

Hold Me In Your Arms or Cry For Help both more soulful and after he split from the pop factory that was Stock, Aitken, and Waterman to I think become more of a twisted artist in his own right it's what I'd check out next. I have to say it's weird you reacted to this song now because I remember my grandpa playing this in his local village hall whilst setting up for a kids birthday disco night. He recently passed away at the amazing age of 104 and we had family, friends, and neighbours in the same hall he helped run for some food, drink, and a celebration of his life just the other day after putting him to rest!!! He was a character who will be missed but definitely remembered. RIP grandpa!!

I listened to his first album on cassette so much that it wore out and broke! No worries, I had a back-up cassette AND when it was released on CD I made sure I got one of those too! When summer vacations rolled around and the road trips began his was the first album that went into the cassette/CD boom box! Our 1989 Toyota 4Runner didn't come equipped with a cassette player so the co-pilot rode with the boom box on their lap and played DJ for the rest of us.😂 Fun fact: Rick just turned 58 on Feb. 6th! He can still belt those tunes out like it was yesterday. He didn't know what being Rick Rolled meant and had to ask his teenage daughter. He loves to tell that story in his interviews.

I love this song and this man has a wonderful voice. I remember when this song first came out people were surprised at that voice came out of that man because he is one person that the voice did not match the person. He is amazing.

I LOVE this song!! I was an American college student who was studying abroad for a year in Seville, Spain when this was a massive hit song. They played it in the El Rio dance club in Seville A LOT. The floor would pack full when it was played. It still instantly reminds me of Spain!! ❤

Blue Eyed Great Britain Soul…A Voice That will just knock you out. His voice is tremendous. Handsome, Can Dance, and apparently been faithfully married for decades. What A Voice and a Man!

Every song on that album is great! Love it! It was years later that I learned that "When I Fall In Love" was a remake of a Nat King Cole song! Just a wonderful album.

Back in the 80's, you just couldn't have a party without a few Rick Astley tracks... You may not think so, but Rick does some gospel singing from time to time.... He is still current, and had a UK No1 album on his 50th birthday..... His musical style has changed a little since the 80's, although he is still popular, and appears on TV often....

His first album was part of the whole Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) factory sound. They produced Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer and Kylie Minogue. They really knew how to create great songs and their sound can really be heard in all these artists. Great pop music! Congrats by the way on hitting 500,000 subscribers!!!! Awesome! I love your channel.

I was living in Nigeria, West Africa when this song came out and it was huge. Love Rick Ashley. My niece is named Jamie-Ashley. He opens his mouth and that voice comes out. We had so many different tunes then it was nice to hear this song. At the time rap was not big so pop music was very popular (pop). This was when Madonna was huge.

A great pop song from the 80’s. Takes me back to my childhood. He has a powerful voice and still does the odd show, but is now mainly a radio dj here in the UK.

My husband and I started dating when this song came out, and he said this was his song to me. We are still together after 37 years (married for 34 years). 💕

Him getting on stage with Foo Fighters and singing his song was epic! Dude's a badass! His videos of him covering all these rocks songs while at home during lockdown were great too! You should check them out.
