Love Letter to Sidney If you fall for someone on first sight, as your gaze first falls upon them, trust me, your feelings will never falter. For me, that wink, was my undoing; yes, as you were leaning against that fireplace, while waiting for Tom, draped by a magnificent white shirt, with waistcoat and leather pants ( not really regency style, but you looked great in them), glass in hand…well, you won me over. And since then, I have been living in a daze. There was only ever you, Sidney Parker: damned sullen, brusque and arrogant, condescendingly pompous, and handsome as hell! A real man !! I left all other TV series behind.You were a magnet; there was something inscrutable about you, a certain inexplicable mystique. I had a strange feeling, and was sure that, for better or for worse, you would fill me with great joy. Behind that detached gaze, I could see a tender heart and I knew that you would lead me to discover your true self. I knew I was headed for an awesome and incredible journey, and it was !! Every day, more and more, I became enslaved by you as you invaded my heart. You, Jane Austen's least developed character! Were she to have completed her writing, you, I am sure, would have been her best creation. …and I quote you: "I’m sorry you think that…." It’s been strange and interesting to study you, to begin to understand how much you grew as a character, episode after episode. You made your entrance as apathetic and gruff: you had loved a woman who betrayed you by marrying a wealthier man (something quite normal for the time, I have to say); you took refuge in Antigua, acquiring ten years of resentment, repressed anger and indifference that ended up stifling your heart . And you stopped using it. Your heart. Too much pain, too much suffering, too much disappointment (yes, you are the most sensitive of the three brothers, there is no doubt, even if you try to hide it in every way). But then she came on the scene, -Charlotte- and everything changed. You know what they say: There’s someone that will know how to love your weaknesses even more than your strengths. She will make you feel like the most important person in the world. You will want to be better for her; she will love you unreservedly, making you smile when you thought you no longer knew how to. She will arrive on tiptoe, when you least expect it, when you believed you could no longer fall in love. She will come to remind you that in life you must never lose hope, because if you are patient, everything eventually comes !! And you find yourselves… and she has melted that barrier encircling your heart. You returned to life and you revealed everything about yourself. I admit that it took you a while, at times behaving in an uncouth and belligerent manner, but what can I say ... .. at that dance and at the regatta, you were extraordinary. I forgive you everything. The words of praise you had for her, when she doubted herself, how you opened up on that dance floor, how you caressed her hands, how you held her tight…. and then the regatta !! Your self-assuredness; the gentleness of that "COME ON" gesture; the invitation to trust you, you who would teach her to row, hand in hand; your eyes lost in love for her, as you ran after her when Eliza made fun of her and ruined your happy moment together, your shared intimacy. Everyone wanted more from you, more decisiveness, but you never cared about the approval of others; you had to be sure now, you had to make it clear, you had to close with the past. I could have have beaten you to a pulp at times, but with that declaration of love at the end of the evening, you knocked me out. Pure magic. From that point on, you could not be stopped: you no longer needed to hide. You made known your feelings and you kissed her (and what an unforgettable kiss it was!) You planned to make her a marriage proposal. YOU MADE US DREAM !! It could not have been more perfect, and then….!Hell was unleashed, Sanditon was in ruins. The prospect of bankruptcy for Tom and for the whole Parker family, made you sacrifice your new found happiness. You sold your soul to the devil! You denied yourself, what you were about to become, and you get engaged to Eliza and shattered our dreams and those of Charlotte. Seeing her climb into the carriage to leave the seaside town was emotional and your absence hurt me. Then came a dramatic turn of events: you arrived on horseback and I think…. now he will stop her and take her away !! But no ... you know you’ve hurt her. You know you mustn’t, nor do you deserve anything else from her and so you limit yourself, with desperation in your eyes, to asking her if she thinks badly of you (you even steal her lines! ). To her negative response you seem relieved and knowing that you cannot give her anything more, you offer her the only thing you have: the certainty that you do not love the other. A denial that hides an affirmation. You can't say I LOVE YOU because you think you don't deserve it anymore and therefore can't even pronounce it. I cried and suffered to death for this scene; first of disappointment, then for the cancellation. It couldn't end like this. No one could believe it, that there would be no happy ending. After a long battle, group consolations, finally there came joy: the long-awaited renewal. And soon after, came the ugly truth: Theo would not be returning. (I will not enter into the debate; there are things that we simply do not know) Sidney, as much as I have waited for your return, I cannot bear the thought of seeing you with any face but HIS. If I’ve loved you so much, it was also thanks to him. Therefore, very reluctantly, for now, I prefer to leave you in the drawer of memories with the hope of reopening it as soon as possible, to see you again in Sanditon with your curls and your full lips (which are after all those of Theo James ... and I will eventually be sending him the bill for all the therapy that I have to do because of him. Pig-headed, obstinate man !!!) It will never be the same without you. For me you were the protagonist, I hope Charlotte doesn’t mind, but without you it just I’ll not be the same.
