During the first three days of July 1863, some 160,000 men were engaged in the greatest battle in military history. The civilians who lived in the area of the battle were witnesses to the horrific fighting, and in the aftermath of the battle, cared for the wounded and dying. With so many young men, it should be no surprise that romances would develop between wounded soldiers and their "angels of mercy."

Great talk! I have documentation on a soldier from South Carolina who was taken to a hospital in Chambersburg as a prisoner after the battle of Gettysburg, and came back after the war to marry his nurse. I got the information from a descendent. He lived in Chambersburg for the rest of his life and is buried there.

General Pickett's is said to be reopening as the Farmhouse Restaurant in Cumberland Township at the site of the old Boyd's Bears Store. I am sure you can google it.

What a pity. General Grant asked for plus about 20 000 soldiers from the Congress after the Civil War and the Congress refused this. I think Grant thought of a few young bachelor Northern soldiers to continue their service. 1. The Exconfederate states lost 23% of the white male between 18-45 years, the border states about 12% and the North only 7%. A lot of Southern girls could have found future husbands with decreasing the mutual revulsion between North and South. 2. General Grant with plus 20 000 soldiers (mainly cavalry) could have stopped the Kluk Klux Klan at the root between 1865-1869.

Dang it! Still no mention of whatever happened to Sallie Meyers long suffering beau "Snyder". He wasnt a soldier and i believe Sallie's mother didnt like him - i believe they thought he was sick with TB.

Isnt it also true that the Powers sisters gathered information from the Union soldiers who were being rounded up as prisoners in the town while retreating during the first day's fighting. and
