OMG! I haven’t seen this great movie in decades! It’s a wonderful, heartfelt movie! I remember Eli Wallach being in this movie as an old salty sailor. Great music and story! I have to see this again. Great cast with Marsha Mason and the great and recently late James Caan!

This movie and song always make me sad for the serviceman's plight: loneliness, potential death, separation from home and family, strange places and behaviors. God bless our servicemen and servicewomen.

And you sir, as we used to say in the good ole' days, you are a gentleman and a scholar......as you struck a nerve there. You see, I'm a retired military having served in two different branches, and am now living in a Third World country. I pray to God daily that some day I'll return stateside. I won't burden folks with the drama of my life, and the sheer hell I went through the last few years on active duty. Suffice it to say, that it had to be Almighty God that pulled me through. But come to think of it now, I consider myself extremely fortunate. You see, there was at least one shipmate that I remember, that was supposed to retire a bit later than I did, but he didn't quite make it. He perished, along with a whole watch section in the machinery spaces of my ship, due to an accidental explosion. This ocurred before the balloon went up in 1991, in the Persian Gulf. Myself, I've promised to literally kiss the ground when I finally get back to the States. Good, bad, or indifferent, it's still the greatest country in the World. In the meantime, I'll just thank God for every day I'm alive......and remember my shipmates.......
