Elvin made the decision to not sing lead vocals on this song because he felt his gravelly voice would not do it justice. Mickey Thomas, a background singer in his band at the time, rode the success of this single all the way to a membership in Jefferson Starship (which featured Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane). Elvin, though he released numerous albums, never had another hit. Good news, though... Elvin is 79 and still going. P.S. Everyone tune in on Female Friday this week when J&A post their 700th video!

Elvin Bishop is such a dichotomy. Born in Southern California but raised on a pig farm in Iowa and in Oklahoma, he was a National Merit Scholar majoring in physics at the University of Chcago when he started playing guitar. He learned to play from old time black bluesmen like Howlin' Wolf but his style was a fusion of Blues, Funk, and Country and mostly party music.

1976 was very good year. It's Elvin Bishop's band - a blue guitarist. Mickey Thomas is singing. He is stellar. At this time, he was a backup singer, who stepped up on this song, because he had range that Elvin did not. I'm sorry you didn't post the Midnight Special footage. Mickey is unbelievable live. I still have this LP. I listen to this all the time. Not long after he got the gig with Jefferson Starship.

Elvin Bishop grew up on a farm in Iowa with no electricity and no running water. His family moved to Oklahoma when he was ten. Raised in an all-white community, he had no exposure to blacks or their music except though the radio, and the piercing sound of Jimmy Reed's harmonica got his attention. When he won a scholarship to the University of Chicago, he found himself in the heart of the Chicago blues scene, and he sunk himself totally into the blues life.

Watch the Midnight Special performance to sort out the who's who - and to see what a great live performance it is. Of course that's Elvin Bishop "pickin' on that red guitar", Mickey Thomas lead vocals, and the backup singer is identified as Reni Slais. Info on her is hard to find, but it seems she was born Reni Slais Simon: "Reni Simon, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the home of blues, soul music and jazz. There is no doubt that Beale Street & the delta influenced her voice. While growing up,her dad played saxophone and loved jazz and that's how she was exposed to the wonderful melodic songs from the 40's that she loves and always wanted to record. In her earlier career she recorded for one of the top publishing companies in Memphis, singing song demos for Eddie Floyd and other Stax recording artists & writers. She signed her first solo recording contract with Steve Cropper of Booker T. & the M.G.'s & the Blues Brothers. She released a single 'I Idolize You', an Ike & Tina Turner song. Later she moved to San Francisco and toured with The Elvin Bishop Band, sang background on 'Fooled Around and Fell In Love' a million seller hit" - From backwoodsnotes.blogspot.com

Great reaction to a Tulsa great! From Tulsa myself is where Elvin grew up from elementary school through high school at Rogers! He said that “growing up in Oklahoma gives you a soulful background for whatever you want to do”! Started listening to him in 1973 first year in college and bought his Let it Flow album! You need to hear long version of “Traveling Shoes” which has a great lengthy guitar solo!

I love how both of you really get into all parts of songs you’ve reacted to. When I was still living home I had the music loud enough for the neighborhood to enjoy. My mom came up and asked why so loud. I told her so I could hear ALL the music. You two seem to do the same, you hear ALL the music. A couple of days later I was in my room listening to The Doors. I looked up and she was just standing there listening. The song ended, she asked who I was listening to. I told her and she said she really liked it. Yes my mom was the greatest. Not just because of that.

As a fellow Okie, I want you to know that Elvin was raised on the other end of the Turner Turnpike from you in Tulsa. His parents owned a house a few blocks from where I was raised. Oklahoma produces a TON of talent! A little background: "Born in Glendale, California on 10 / 21 / 1942. Elvin Bishop's name is synonymous with the blues. The Tulsa native, who is famous for his 1970s hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” attributes part of his success to his time spent in the Sooner State. “Growing up in Oklahoma gives you a soulful background for whatever you want to do,” he said."

Singing, instrumentals, song writing, it’s unrivalled and lost today, seriously all these songs and artists from these eras, 50/60/7Os and even 90s have so much depth in every context..it separates the men and woman from the boys and girls from today compared to back then. One of my top 10 songs of all time. As good as this studio version is, you must do the live “Midnight Special” tv show version.

This song came out the year (1975) that I was born. So, I've always known and loved it. A funny thing is happening, though, as I get older and I listen to these songs from the 70s. The drum work just captives me. It's a style so unique to the era. And, just as I type this, Jordan brings up the use of the high-hat. Right on!

If you like Mickey's voice on this, you have to do 'Jane,' by Jefferson Starship. You'll get a better idea of his incredible range. And it's a great song.

Just like in Charlie Daniels' hit "South's Gonna Do It Again", he said "Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay, he ain't good lookin' but he sure can play". He was a phenomenal guitarist. The singer was Mickey Thomas, who later sang with Jefferson Starship.

The ultimate seventies song! Everybody always talks about the lead vocals and lead guitar. And yes these are great, fantastic! But nice to hear you talk about the bluesy piano. I think the pianist enjoyed playing this song a lot!
