To the first question asked, (I paraphrase) " How do we wean ourselves off the desire to want more things, to keep up with trends (cell phones cited) and new gadgets that form the new milieu where people communicate, interact, connect, or experience the world?" Here's perhaps a thought experiment we can all try. Not saying it will provide answers, but to each of us, it might lead us to some semblance of balance between desires, trend pressures, and a more sustainable outlook to what we need. It goes like this: Set for yourself, and if you are a couple then it might be useful to do this jointly, a target or set of objectives, you feel will meet your gratification. This will be a comfortable home (perhaps adequate to raise a small family), the type of transportation you would like (this can be public if you live in a city, or if you are the wandering sort, a safe and comfortable car (preferably gets good mileage). And allow yourselves, 3 or 4 pet luxuries (season tickets to support your favourite team, a good camera if you're into photography, (sorry ladies, I have little ideas to what you might like, and I don't want to patronize by citing jewellery, clothing and shoes), but you get the idea. Now strive to get yourselves to these targets. Here's the key. When you more or less get there, stop. There's no need to upgrade your 4cyl 1.6l car to a 3l V8 with double the horsepower. When you get your 3-room apartment or house, there's no need to aim for a 5-room bungalow with a 2-car garage. Make your cell-phone last 3-4 years. Their generally pretty reliable, and can service all your comms and online needs for about that long, there's no need to change to iphone25 just because it was launched and has a snazzier screen or a better camera. Instead, make a conscious decision to switch your focus. To be a present father for your kids. Make time for them. Be a helpful member of your community. You have skills. If you are good with fixing things, help your neighbours when their ceiling fans don't work. If you're in IT, help the elderly neighbour setup conferencing on a computer so they can interact with their grandkids 400miles away. Your goals are now about what you do for others, not how much stuff you accumulate. As a community, we should consciously recognize people who take on these roles. Not with material goods or medals, but with respect and camaraderie. Over time, build a sharing community. Where 1 drill and set of drill-bits can be used by 17 households (I bet most of our drills has not been used for the past 3 months). Where toys and storybooks can be passed among households with suitable age children, because you know who has kids and how old they are. Reduce food waste, if a loaf of bread usually gets moldy before your household can finish it, split it with your neighbour. You get the picture. If 4 households can share and live with what 3 households typically consume, we've reduced consumption by 25%! This is not an oppressive totalitarian order. Not is it communism (as the right will no doubt label it). It is sensible consumption. Treating every resource and goods with the respect it deserves by not wasting it. If a cell-phone can last 3 years, don't upgrade to a new one in 2 years. This will not solve the problems of the world. But a 25% reduction in consumption is not a bad place to start.

What gives me hope is that there are so many people who are aware or becoming aware. It is amazing how long this type of process takes. Perhaps this one is being fast-tracked because of the internet. Listening to part 1 and hearing the questions in part 2, show just how much consciousness there is of the dilemma in which we find ourselves. I'm thinking back to my teen years where I had a concern for the earth and its inhabitants, but there was, obviously, no access to the graphic scenes we see on KZfaq and the internet. A static photo in the newspaper did little to convey the actual level of devastation in a war zone or climate catastrophe. Despite the surges of depression and anxiety over the problems, we must never let go of the hand that hope stretches out to us. That is the only way we can actively, rectify anything.

Looking at that screen I see two comfortable chairs, a table, a vase, bunch of flowers making the view worth being seen. My mind feels at peace in this homely surrounding. In this cosy atmosphere I hear GM encouraging me with his bright ideas. What if we see GM sat cross legged on a mat and expressed his thoughts would I be equally impressed. I think I would if I was in India, may be in a buddhist temple surrounded by trees. Europeans do not stand a chance to practice a way of life that GM is proposing which is taken from granted in Indian tradition.

A system of infinite growth can ONLY be stopped by making it financially worthwhile to SHARE the jobs we NEED people to do and work much LESS.....no more working and doing anything FOR money. Sharing the resources would be automatic once you get people sharing the jobs we NEED people to do and not working FOR money. You certainly can't stop growth by working harder or doing even more work. You wouldn't need volunteers for anything if we decide it's a job we need to have done. It would be worthwhile to do the job.

I totally agree with the woman who talked just about the need for caring,for ourselves,for each other and for the earth...maybe so much of this needless consuming we do often comes from a deep lack of feeling cared for...not always of course.. but I know much of my own "overconsumption" or when I buy things I know I don't need is in fact just a poor substitute for other things lacking in my life like relationships and community

IMHO, Monbiot is the new Marx. Marxist socialism may have paved the way toward an anti-capitalist and truly egalitarian society, but, as we all know, it soon ran into troubles and is not likely to be the ideology that takes us to that social goal. Monbiot is one of the few thinkers (and doers!) I know who is thinking in new and productive directions. Critiques of capitalism, though important, are now a dime a dozen. Yet positive alternative visions of the future are extremely rare. Monbiot's is one of those rare positive visions!

Sadly, the situation in Finland is not as good as Mr.Monbiot describes in the video. At the moment our gallups in Finland say that our most popular party is a populist far right party, so we are pretty much in the same swamp as many other countries are. The good thing is that our political system is a multi-party one and their support is only about 21 percent. Still a bleak and saddening situation. And big part of the problem has to do with peoples medialiteracy skills.
@pequodexpress
@pequodexpress 3 жыл бұрын
You can see this in the Finnish neoliberal class that has recently started up schools internationally, schools that superficially market Finnish educational principles but are purely oriented toward profit. The Finns who run these schools are of the 21% you speak of.
@honeychurchgipsy6
@honeychurchgipsy6 3 жыл бұрын
@ Simo - I think you have it right when you mention the importance that our 'media literacy skills' play in all of this. We live in a world where 'information' is everywhere but we have little or no training in how to assess this 'information'. So, we tend to trust certain outlets - the trouble for the USA is that they seem to have no restrictions at all on what radio stations and TV 'news' stations put out as facts. And anyway I doubt that restrictions and accountability will have the desired effect - it will be seen as censorship and added to the myriad conspiracies that those listening to Fox News and the Rush Limbaugh type radio programmes already believe in. So, what is left? I think that the only way is to improve our thinking skills - we need to teach critical thinking skills, scepticism and logical fallacies in school. It will not be a magic bullet and it will take a generation to have any marked effect, but it will help. There's a reason why, in Texas, the school governors who choose which books kids throughout the US will study from, object to critical thinking skills being included in the school curriculum - they are mostly Evangelical Christians - science denying creationists - who are also dedicated to the Neo-Liberalist agenda. And they understand that the monopoly they currently have over the nation's thinking will be undermined if they teach kids how to think and not what to think.

AS regards CO2 accumulation.... anything beyond surfeit can be a pollutant.... we're looking at a question of balance.... excess CO2 is not taken up by plants that are not allowed to exist.... and our current Agricultural and Industrial Methods are disruptive in the EXTREME.... for Natural Nurture FROM plant growth..... around the World. At the Same time we started hyper-injecting fossilized carbon into our atmosphere.... we began proliferating Iron Plow Tillage.... agriculturally disrupting photo-synthetic carbon sequestration.... effectively Doubling the Damage....at LEAST. Yes, always ask: why is he there? What is his motive, intention? His personal life, integrity? Has he accidentally become a celebrity and quite likes it?

@@uk1simon1 Yes, it is just inconceivable that anyone who speaks publicly of these things can’t possibly be doing it merely because it’s the right thing to do....we are all just evil, selfish bastards that want more stuff, just as we’ve been told by our “betters”. Is that it?

What I see him doing is completely incompatible with my idea of a demagogue. He promotes ideas and actions of no direct personal benefit to him, he directs people to other ideas, he even dislikes the possibility to sway democratic decisions in Extinction Rebellion when he's asked what should the movement do, and he confronts people with hard problems and no easy solution. Above all, he's not asking anyone to blindly follow or believe him, he's talking about important issues and giving his view. So, how is he a demagogue? Please, explain why you think that.

@@citizencairn5230 So, after I explicitly asked for the reasoning behind someone just ascribing him some tag without any justification, you felt like doing the same? In a reply to me? Expecting what exactly? If you have any justification for your judgement, you were free to give it right from the start. Otherwise, you are not adding anything to the conversation. Anyone can do what you are doing, look: "you, Citizen Cairn, are just a hack, jeallous of his platform and public image". See? Not difficult at all. And I'm not gonna justify it either.

Oh dear. George insists that we must dismantle the only system that works. He just offers vague notions of what might replace free enterprise and property ownership. Drive around any housing estate in the UK and it's possible to tell at a glance if council property or owner occupied. The latter will usually be well cared for, the state owned areas are likely to appear very unloved. We are natural capitalists, that's why it works. Simples. Until George and his fellow Guardianista's have a well researched and proven viable alternative to the present arrangements a tad less proselytising might be in order? Over population must be a contributing factor to environmental degradation but because this does not fit with leftist agendas rarely seems to be discussed.

Economics is about incentives. The incentives are all backwards because of the neoliberal paradigm in which we swim. Can you imagine a world in which the public domain was the well-cared for part and private spaces were run-down, because the incentives were structured that way? No? I guess you'll have to settle for the end of the civilised world you rely on for your survival because of a failure of imagination.
