Back in 2009 Lance Mountain set out to make a TV show to pay respect to the generation of skaters from the late 1970’s. Guys like Bobby Valdez and Darrell Miller who didn’t become household names but nonetheless had a huge impact on Lance and skateboarding in general. The show never happened but we found all the footage and decided to cut the story together. Here it is... The Origin of the Love Letters with Lance Mountain - Part 1.

Love that you called yourself a SKATE RAT ! Dude I don’t know you from Adam but almost every skater (obviously not all ) but a large amount of skaters that I met back in the day you immediately clicked with or at least you knew he was part of your society. It was like the Army for me. I knew you. We’re on my team I may not exactly liked you but you were on my side and if something ever popped off 90% of the time ,If you messed with 1 of us you had a problem with the whole group. Many a security guard and tool bag will attest to this dynamic 😂😂😂 See ya brother. I’m 50 and I’m skating still. Love all the parks they have now. Perfect for an old man like me !

This, for me, is the best thing on u tube! And I haven't skated in years, but this show has inspired me to purchase a vintage Per Welinder street deck like I had back in the day(late 80's) and go skate. It's rough but getting easier. Keep it up, LOVE LETTERS RULE!!!

Grosso- I'm so happy to see you doingbwell. About 10 years ago i was looking at pictures of Jay Adams and reading about old skaters. Somehow I stumbled on you and a couple interviews describing your hardcore drug days. Living in a quonset hut and pissing in bottles if i remember correctly. You seemed like a cool guy and i was fascinated with you. Fast forward a few years and you're doing Love Letters. You are one of the funniest, most real kooks out there. So happy to see you on here. BTW...love that Bukowski tshirt.

Lance is clearly a complex human. I love how the Letters doesn't simplify these stories. Cuz things aren't simple. People aren't simple. Lance seems like a super sweet dude. Grosso, too, underneath all the bluster. Grosso was clearly a guy with love in his heart -- and a whole lot of pain. RIP, man.

RIP Jeff. He always talked about all the medication and shit he was taking, and I had a hunch he wouldn't live to be 80, but to hear he died yesterday fucked me up. Both his skating and his outlook on life influenced me so much it's like I've lost my mentor almost. Everything he talked about in both skating and in his general attitude I took inspiration from. I looked up to the guy. He's probably the only reason I've skated for so long even though I still sucked ass at it after almost 20 years of being on a board. He's such a unique character. Both the way he acted as a teen and his regret later in life resonated with me. I don't want to be melancholy or sappy or melodramatic but it has to be said that Jeff grosso was an awesome dude and inspired a tonne of people, least of all me.

TRUE STORY: When I was a kid I remember going int to Orton's shop, Random X. His business cards literally said, "George Orton was the first person to do an air, not TA." Who the fuck puts that on a business card? Dude brought it up anytime someone new would walk in the shop.

Hey can you guys explain to me how Lance Mountain was really viewed back in the day? I watched the Bones Brigade documentary and got the feeling that he wasn't as good as the others on his team, but Grosso seems to hate that documentary and say Lance was the shit back then. And from the few edited clippings/rankings on random contests they included int eh documentary Lance seemed to place in the Top 5-10 in these comps a lot.

@CT-nb5lm Жыл бұрын
I will speak for 90% of Gen-X skaters from the 80's into the 90's tech era. We couldn't stand th eBonesBrigade. Esp dorky Mullen! But Lance & Ray Barbee were hands down the exceptions.. ~~~1990/1991 my local skate shop had a large TV that constantly played a long mix tape(pre 411 days) and Lance had a long session with all the Ams who would become the pros of tomorrow. But what blew all of us away was Lance skating street w/ Gonz but serious. No silly goofy but actually skating this cool hubba. And i remember it blowing all of us away at how Tech Lance was. I didn't know he could backside kickflip with such grace & ease. That session i know effected all of palm beach county,FL skaters who went to that skate shop in that year period. And this was the era skating was probably peak-popular. My little suburbia alone had easily over 100 skaters & it was a small as town. And that's just counting the dudes who could skate, Not the casuals... Yeah Lance is a beast & legend tells that really went for it skating street during 'The Firm' days skating with RB & those Twins. I miss this era & Lance & Gonz were a huge part of the old guard i still liked. Even though they were about 10 years older then us 15 year olds.

I remember they showed a contest on wide world of sports, see who could get the highest on the free firmer quarter pipe. It had about 15 feet of vert. George Orton won. Almost frontside grinded it. Tay Hunt got second, a backside slide. Can't remember any of the other skaters that were there...

Lance Mountain was always my freaking Hero. I was big and gawky like Lance. I’d get bummed that I was 6 ft 4 and I couldn’t skate like the smaller guys. I thought it was a disadvantage to be tall and lanky. I soon learned it was not. Specially doing Ollie’s over garbage cans and off jump ramps to tail grab. Those where my favorite because you went up so high and I’d grab the tail and just push out hard.

Grossi is a good friend. He may be a freak, Peters definitely is one along with dudes like Blender or Dill, but Mountain? Lance has a great spirit and has always brought a great deal to skating, but he’s no freak. Lance is a dork. But maybe that’s what makes him a freak - in a world of Mike Vallely’s and Alva’s, doofy guys like Mountain or Gonz kinda are freaks. No matter what, I love how Grosso always big upped his friends.
