Another masterpiece by the Sherman Brother sung by the lovely Sally Ann Howes. And to think that this often gets cut when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is shown. For shame! Like Feed the Birds in Mary Poppins, this song is at the heart of the film.

Ever since I saw the movie as a child, i have loved this song and the talent that is Miss Sally Ann Howes. The lyrics and the orchestration are simply haunting! The final moments of the song, I catch myself listening to the chords in the strings--sheer gorgeousness!

A beautiful song for a beautiful person, I used to rewind this part of chitty chitty, just to listen to the lyrics and Sally's voice, this and doll box favourite part of the film, my nans favourite as well! And also when they are singing 'hush a by mountain' to the children in the cave, utterly beautiful, they don't make them like this 'sadly' anymore.

What a lovely voice Sally has. Her voice kind of reminds me of Mary Costa's voice, who did the voice of Princess Aurora from "Sleeping Beauty."

Didn't care for this when I was a kid, but now appreciate the sentiment. It's so tender that she thinks of Caraticus as a "lovely lonely man".

Wonderful song, and the fabulous arrangement and orchestrations by the legendary arranger/conductor Irwin Kostal adds so much to Sally Ann Howes performance. A little trivia: Irwin Kostal had been Sid Caesar's music director on his classic tv show and was chosen to arrange and conduct West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Sound of Music, and then Mary Poppins. He was self-taught--a natural musical genius.

Onoy the actual fantasy parts are, well, fantasy. When he picks her up and drops her off, it's real. So the whole POINT of this song is her saying "He only told stories, he must be lonely to have no actual anecdotes about his friends he can tell me".

Singularly gorgeous Act 1 finale. Song and singer are so beautiful that we forget that, at this point, we are now watching a story-within-a story. It is also special, as it is Ms. Howes' only solo in the film. Beautiful summer dress, beautiful garden, and a nice finish with the swing rocking as the lady runs upstage. An exquisite number.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs in the film, its a shame its not included in the stage version. However, has anyone noticed that in the film's narrative Caractacus is telling the story and is therefore the one who's actually singing the song about himself? If I was Truly and I was listening to that I would be so embarrassed! But on a serious note it's a beautiful song and Sally Ann Howes sings it to perfection!

I was around 8 when my dad showed me this movie. I don't remember seeing this part the first time I watched it, but the 2nd or 3rd time I saw it I paid attention to this song and I couldn't stop crying. It was so beautiful with how much she loved Mr. Potts but it was also sad. It still is but I don't cry anymore. I just hope everyone finds someone they love one day, whether it be a lovely lonely man or a woman they can dedicate this song to.

Ahh I love this song now, but I'm pretty sure I used to skip it when I was a kid - except I distinctly remember swing (because how cool is it) and the stream with rocks in it... We watched both Chitty and Dr. Doolittle growing up and so somehow in my memory I combined this song and "If I were a man" from Doctor Doolittle, because it also features a young wealthy socalite woman singing in her garden about life plans, with a stream with rocks in it... except I think I was expecting Truly to miss a step and fall into the stream too - but she's too classy for that, and not singing about gouging eyes out etc. haha They are both great songs though and I want that swing in my garden!
