@@lovesloudcars You're missing out if you don't know Deboss Garage. A knowledgeable Canadian mechanic with a great sense of humor who just wades through really cool projects. Way more entertaining than any of those dolled up, actor mechanics with their fake southern accents on TV. We have a '68 Kenworth powered by an 8V-92 Detroit 2 stroke on our farm that I learned to drive, hauling bales as a teenager. I'd always dreamed about dropping that engine into Grandpa's '58 Chev 1 ton. I gave up when I got out my measuring tape.

When I had my IH 3-53, I was living on a mountain (still do), with a 12% grade and 1600' to climb every night. The sound it made pulling that grade (with the water temps always cool no matter what the load was) was like this....great to hear it again! I shouldn't say this probably, but 40 years later I now drive a Prius, ha ha ha.

@@bullcraphere1316 That’s the point of mounting the second one backwards. When you’re in a lower gear, what is happening normally? The input shaft is spinning faster than the output. So when mounted backwards, the input shaft (which is now the output shaft) in 3rd, 2nd and 1st is now spinning faster than than the shaft coming into it from the first transmission.

I'm a small time, part time scrapper. Supplements my pension, gives me somethin' to do. I found a blown up 3-71 in the local dump years ago. It was disassembled. I grabbed the blower and sold it to an old hot rodder for $150! He knew how to rebuild em for gas engines. A year ago, I found a 4-71 at the same dump. It's on a Reservation on the coast, and we got a ton of old, wooden fishing boats. Would love to find a 6-71 blower someday! Anyhow, lotta Detroits out here, still.

keep on truckin Man Lol you’re probably not too far off Back on topic though, theoretically because of the way the transmission(s) work on this truck, I would think it would have the same top speed capabilities in forward and reverse. With that being said, a 3-53 won’t exactly be a barn burner, but goddamn it will sure clean all of those tree stumps out of your yard RIGHT now.

Let's see...assuming the "economy" rear end for 1-tons (4.57:1) and 32" tires, with the aux & main transmissions in 4th, cruising speed at 2500RPM is 52MPH. SM420 ratios (according to my '67 dealer data book) are: 7.02:1 1st 3.56:1 2nd 1.71:1 3rd direct 4th 6.78:1 reverse So in a O/D configuration they'd be: direct 4th 0.58:1 3rd 0.28:1 2nd 0.14:1 1st 0.15:1 reverse That makes top forward speed in each O/D gear (assuming all other variables are unchanged): 52MPH 4th 89MPH 3rd (!) 186MPH 2nd (!!!) 367MPH 1st (!!!!!!!) That'd be a quick trip to Vancouver Island!

I rode in one of the first automatic transmissions in a Semi back in the 1970s made by Detroit Diesel in Indy. I will never forget how proud they were of it when they demonstrated it during a short ride & told me how rare & new it was. Detroit diesel was also merging with Rolls Royce on making aircraft engines at the time. I think maybe Detroit Diesel was working on the fan blades at the time. They were a wonderful company at that time. That transmission was really something back then. That sound really brings back memories.

@Charley_Buehner

@@lovesloudcars My initial comment was suggesting two different scenarios (not sure if that got confused or not) - Assuming both transmissions are the same, it should make no difference which box is in reverse, for the end result to be the same -- except that if the rear box is reversed, you won't be shifting "backwards" 4th-through-1st, you'll be running the front through the gears 1-through-4 normally - the difference being that 4th is a synchro'd gear, so no playing with clutch and cramming the stick trying to keep from grinding. The "both sticks in reverse" was a different concept, a very heavily gear-reductioned forward gear (I know that's not a word... "gear-reduced" just didn't seem to fit the sentence very well LOL)

This brings back memories. I remember being in front of Kenny Isom Industrial Engineering Caldwell, Idaho listening to a 353 Detroit ideling in a Toyota Land Cruser. Had to be about 1973 or so. I remember he had a browning behind the main box. Think browning was three speed but that was a long time ago. Fun listening to driver shifting after leaving business putting her up thru the gears. Nothing like the sound of a 2 cycle Detroit. The primary reason I am deaf today as an owner of a International 4200 conventional with a 318 Detroit. Oh to be young once again.

Thanks Dawg. I've had tons of questions & views from this video and part 1 showing how it was built that I will have to make a part 3 showing more details like more shifting both transmissions. no "next month" promises, but I'll keep working on it.

Oh yeah! Isn't that the truth hey? Glad you enjoyed the video. Still gonna make some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse. Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend.

Liked your video on the 353 Apache, back in 1976 [yes?] saw an article in magazine showing the 353 option in a Step van, Always on the lookout for that engine. And that Poor Man’s Overdrive? Fantastic

Thanks givermore. glad you enjoyed it. Planning to do some more videos of it after winter is over and the tires are changed & brakes gone over. Planning to get some more footage of shifting & messing with the gears to answer questions like what happens when both are in reverse. Meanwhile stay tuned and I'll do my best to keep you entertained.

I don't mind trying but would be tough to pump out quality original for a long time without some massive budget & time. so far this hobby has paid me zero, But I'll do my best! Tons of comments & questions on this video, will have to make a part 3 I guess. Hope you check out part 1 if you didn't already.

Yes sir! There's certainly an ongoing discussion about who should be the next owner!! People ask if it's for sale? I always reply that if Jay Lenno called to buy it, it might be turned down. Hope you enjoyed it, I'm planning to record some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse. Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend and thanks for watching and your comment.
