In 2004, the Bears were desperate for a QB to replace an injured Rex Grossman. So desperate that they signed Chad Hutchinson off the scrap heap. Chad was not equal to the occasion, but don't tell Lovie that.

Nice work here Professor. Its refreshing to see an intelligent look at sports problems. Mike Ditka used to call out his questionable players in the media. I liked this approach because it really gave the player on the hot seat the motivation to prove everyone wrong, especially under added pressure from what the media was reporting. Lovie and the current coach are good at pretending everything is fine and "PR" the football program like they are running a store. Which I guess in a way, the NFL is today, lol.

"Bring back Palmer's lines." says Alex March. If only they could bring back his hair, what little he had.

The Bears' problems, historically, has been at quarterback. When Jim McMahon managed to stay relatively injury-free for an entire year the Bears won a championship.

Brad, do you still cover the Bears and other Chicago sports?

No. I retired in January, 2006 and moved to Phoenix in 2011. I still follow the NFL very closely and watch most games thanks to Directv. I also follow golf, but have lost all interest in MLB and the NBA. Just a casual observer when it comes to college football and basketball. Those sports were corrupt when I broke into the business and are even more corrupt now. Big money has a tendency to do that.

Brad Palmer...speaking of corruption...just what were your thoughts concerning the 1979 playoffs between the Bears and Eagles...errr Zebras?

olofpalme63 My recollection is that the Bears fell victim to a bad call. As I recall, Brian Baschnagel was flagged for being illegally in motion, nullifying a Walter Payton TD that likely would have changed the outcome. Unfortunately, I only have the recording for the first quarter of that game. But I have never questioned the integrity of NFL officials. Yeah, they make some bad calls and sometimes they don't get it right after looking at the replay. Of course, calls couldn't challenged until just a few years ago. The corruption I alluded to was baseball looking the other way on steroids for some 18 years, and colleges recruiting and keeping players in uniform who can't cut it academically, as well as paying them under the table. Back when teams played 10-game schedules, the NCAA said they couldn't go to 11 games because the players would miss too much class time. Then they went to 11 games and then 12 and then 13 for a league playoff. They said they couldn't have Division-1 playoffs. Same reason, even though every other division had playoffs. The real reason is that there is more money to be made with the bowl system. There are some 35 bowls game and of the 70 teams that participate, around 10 don't even have winning records. When schools are put on probation, it's the players who are punished. The coaches get off scott free and often move on to green pastures at other schools willing to win at any cost. Then there's Notre Dame. They were on the committee that negotiated a TV contract with ABC on behalf of the CFA. Georgia and Oklahoma wanted to bolt and do their own TV package. Notre Dame talked them out of it. A deal with ABC was reached, but then NBC called Notre Dame and together they cut a $40 million dollar deal. ABC reminded Notre Dame that they were part of their deal with the CFA, only to be told by Notre Dame that just because they were a party to negotiating the deal didn't mean that they would be included in it. Sports Illustrated reported the whole thing with a cover story entitled, "We're Notre Dame and You're Not"! I could go on, but you get the idea. Hypocrisy has no limits when it comes to the NCAA and big-time football and basketball.
