Yeah, as soon as all these new vinyl fans realize after about 5-10 plays their over-price piece of vinyl sounds like it was used as a flying disc at the beach, the vinyl craze will be over.

I have more CD's than vinyl, my first vinyl self purchase was Electric Warrior T Rex in 71 I think it was released, I was 8 and never stopped buying, I'll be pleased when to vinyl "rush" is over and prices become more sensible if ever they do, I'm a month or two away from a new turntable/arm purchase :)

Look at the life spans though, CD’s have a life span of 20 years, Vinyl 100 years. I have vinyl that sounds as good now, as it did when I bought it 50 years ago. But I have some CD’s that have oxidized because of manufacturing problems, that won’t play anymore.

@Chris Shelley I hear you, there are advantages to each format for sure. I do enjoy the sound better on vinyl, but then with a CD you never have the pops and clicks. Sad thing is I have around 200 CD’s and no player anymore, which is why I would like to find a reasonable player to stream into a DAC. Most of the music I listen to these days, are either vinyl or lossless streaming.

Thank you for this review! I went ahead and bought one on your recommendation (Amazon had marked it for 18 quid in the states for some reason) and it has been such a joy to use an easy, elegant CD player to listen to music. I've found myself going into the thrift shop poking around for CDs that look intriguing and have such a large sonic world opened up to me. Thanks again!

I love CD's and vinyl. They sound much better than streaming and I can get them free from my towns transfer station swap area. I also get free vinyl from the swap area. Plus, I don't want another monthly payment for streaming and not all CD's and vinyl are on the streaming services.

Totally with you on that. I've never really understood paying for an album and not physically owning it, I mean that was literally the appeal of building a music collection, or still is in my mind. I stream some stuff, but usually only if I haven't heard it before, then if I like it I go buy the physical copy. You have to wonder if streaming is actually more detrimental to the artists earnings as well, they may get an OK deal now, but once the formats have all been killed off I'd expect these streaming services to really tighten up and squeeze these people.

I recently went to a record fair here in australia, and I saw a table of used classical music CDs. Every single one was two dollars. Even four disc sets. Even CDs still sealed in the original shrinkwrap! And these were good quality releases. You really can't complain about that price, can you. To hell with streaming.

I imagine this is aimed at a young market. If that's what it takes to get young people into physical media then it's great news. I still have a Sony D-EG7 Discman that I bought around 1998 and although the sound wasn't very good compared to newer cd players, it still works very well. It's fun to see the cd is still alive.

Thank you so much for this detailed review. I just bought the Aiwa PCD-810 which is available brand new on Amazon, but I was tempted by some of the lesser known brands that are a similar price. It seems that major brands have mostly given up on portable CD players in the same way that have with cassette players. I have a 1992 Technics XP6 which is looking and working like new, but when the Aiwa turns up I'll be interested to her how it compares to the XP6. If it's less than impressive I will probably try the Trettitre.

Very nicely timed video; a big vinyl fan here but guess what? I still and will continue to buy CDs on a regular basis as I always have done because they have their place in my music life which vinyl often just does not fill. I feel at the moment that there is an awful lot of music out there only being released on CD, especially CD Box Sets where I could mention the gorgeous new Jane Birkin box or perhaps Robert Palmer The Island Years. And then there are companies like Cherry Red and others who are releasing super clam shell boxes with 3-4 CDs worth of great music plus inner sleeves and a booklet and only in this format. I just purchased all of the Joe Gibbs Dub albums in one box. Currently, to listen to a CD I have to switch on three hi-fi components so I believe I can see a place for the Trettitre on my desktop connected via BT to my standalone speaker. I just ordered a triple LP set for 87,00€ so this new piece of kit won't break the bank. Greetings from Berlin.

Bought one of these CD players and it arrived today. Very very impressed with the sound quality for the £64 I paid on first listen. It won’t be part of either of my systems, and will instead be used in my home office paired to some Grado head cans. Had I not read your review I’d likely not pulled the trigger on this, so cheers for the review and pointers. I’m well pleased 😃

Thank you so much for covering this. Being my specific age (43) I went through thr time period of losing, giving away, and even throwing away CDs when MP3 and especially Lossless formats came out. Fortunately while crate digging for vinyl records I started noticing many CD crates started popping up in thrift stores for between .99 and $2.99 a piece. I started grabbing them up again and now have a collection that my 18 year old self would have lost his mind over. All for ridiculously low capital invested. I've been looking for things to use as a transport considering I use a very good DAC (Bifrost) and anything called a transport costs ridiculous amounts of money. I've settled on the better players from the early 2000's that have an optical or coax out. I've compared actual transports owned by friends to my thrift store counterparts and honestly we've had a hell of a time hearing enough of a difference to justify the expensive transports. I've found my solution but am always curious and on the lookout for other solutions. I don't think this is a solution for me but thank you so much for putting out CD content.

Same here. Streaming is good but what happens when the system goes down? I am now buying used CDs that once retailed between $12-$25 US dollars for $1.00-$6.00. Same with vintage equipment. Carver receivers for under $300 and NAD CD player for $30 and classic RSL speakers for $100. These brands are still working after 25 plus years because I am lucky and they were manufactured right.

My old Sony all metal thin elegant cd player I bought 30 years ago .. has the most useful feature of all .. a digital optical out, which I could use with an optical to coaxial converter with my amplifier (Monitor audio A100) which has a good dac (digital to analogue converter) in it It’s only recently that I was able to get a CD player .. an Amazon branded device (costs £20 and has a very functional remote ) which runs off a standard phone charger or external battery pack for phone charging. (Which makes it movable .. possible to play it without a mains charger unit) Importantly it has a coaxial wired digital out (and hdmi) which I connect to the dac in my amp and sounds indistinguishable from the great mains £400 Arcam cd player I have .. which has great digital to analogue conversion . My new set up has a tiny foot 🦶 print in my living room. Very pleased with it and cost £20. The A100 dac amp can be had 2nd hand for 100 to £200

Three years ago looking for an affordable portable player with decent sound to take with me on used CD hunts at local resale shops, an HDJUNTUNKOR player for whatever reason came up in more than a couple of discussions so I purchased it on Amazon($40.00) to give it a try. I didn't want to buy a twenty, thirty year old Sony or other brand that I was familiar with that stopped making them. All the new models come from companies I never heard of and wonder if most come from the same or couple of factories in the far east. Anyhoo, this model was slim, has EQ settings and rechargeable batteries that really last and stay charged, but the best thing about it is that it sounds wonderful, surprisingly so. Plays in any position. It really makes a difference with what headphones you use with it. While my in the ear AKGs are fine, my Scosche phones are fantastic with it. I pulled the player out after reading your review and popped Gergiev's Scheherazade with the Kirov Orchestra, turned it on and it was holding a charge after not using it for half a year, and yep, wonderful sound of a wonderful performance.

Great video there’s something about paying just 8 to 12 bucks for a brand new CD. I also like knowing I own it and it can’t be edited or deleted. I have Apple Music, Spotify and You Tube music. Yes, that's the exact issue that negates it from being used in any of my systems. I've found that the (what used to be) top of the line CD players from early 2000's with an optical out have become my solution for a budget transport. Have compared some of my thrift solutions to my friends fancy thousand $ transports and ended up irritating my friends (in good fun) once they heard the quality of my solutions that cost $15-$20.

How are noise levels with CDs. They only say better than 70db and some comments say a noisy floor. If authentic tape hiss on on older prize recordings it's fine (John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, e.g.) but if overall, please no. Do they publish which Bluetooth protocols are supported? I couldn't find it on their website. If LDAC, I might buy one. I have a pretty good Sony BluRay optical to Panasonic AVR for CDs but having a Bluetooth option with CDs in hand would be a nice addition. Many CDs I own are not (easily) findable on the usual streams. Some are never streamed. I think Apple is on to something with searchability of Classical streaming. No idea how well they do it.

Also find removing CD's bit cumbersome - have also noticed some distortion on things like Hammond Organ . Otherwise pleased and as you say for the price a good addition . I think having a remote would have been a great addition even if it jacked the price a little

I re-started collecting CDs several years ago, buying new ones. Streaming music services will erase our culture. Youth won't even be able to remember the artists and songs they enjoyed once they switch services or it goes defunct. They aren't going to have much to share with their kids, grandkids etc culturally speaking. Collect music, Vinyl, CD albums, Tapes, etc. Keep it will preserved and enjoy showing it off. I protect mine, jewel cases and digipaks into a cheap plastic envelope each, then those go into collector boxes. I show them off proudly and it inspires others to enjoy the love of collecting music

My CD's will never leave the house. Poor outside handling and storing has led to this myth of CD having a very limited life span. CD rot is caused by poor handling, extreme high and low temperatures, stored in direct sunlight, dirt and grease contaminating the protective lacquer... and so on. If compact discs were handled the same way as records then the life span of CD's will be just that - a life span.

Portable cd player no! It's too big & you need a bag full of cd's with you, when a smaller digital mp3 or flac player can do the job better & easier with more choice. The place for cd players are for quality players in the home like I also do, where my large now cheaper (£2 each) cd collection is stored. Cd Portable is not going to take off its too impractical today especially when like me you have 200 high res flac albums on your mobile phone that you can stream in your cars or any Bluetooth speakers that nearly everyone possesses. My vinyl buying has died off due to excessive prices.
