Low key photography is great in studio for portrait photos but is also amazing for all kinds of photography. In his latest tutorial, Ray Scott show examples of low key photography and how to create these kinds of images. He shows you some of the ways using flash and without flash. Along with high key photography, low key photography is one of the more popular techniques used in portrait photography. There are many other uses too and that is what this video is about. Looking for new ways to express oneself as a photographer is always a worthwhile goal.
When in studio or in the field Ray uses Canon gear. This is a choice he made years ago knowing that he was buying into a system that he could grow into. His go to camera is the Canon EOS 6D with the second camera being a Canon 5D. Lenses used are all L series f/4 except for the 50mm macro with extender. 16-35mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4L, and 70-200mm f/4L round out the kit which is carried about with either a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250 messenger bag for city shooting or a Lowepro Sling Bag for landscape field work. While Ray does more camera handholding than before due to the image stabilization capabilities of his various lenses, he still is a believer in using his Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod. It's light and it is sturdy.
Ray is a firm believer in exposing himself to as much photography and its history as possible. By looking at other people's photos, he has gained a big appreciation of what this medium has to offer. Ray doesn't think that "copying" someone else's style is a good thing but rather feels that exposing oneself to others work can work as a teaching and inspirational tool. With this in mind, Ray has amassed a list of favorite photographers that he uses for inspiration. Some of these artistic photographers are Galen Rowell, Ansel Adams, Frans Lanting, Annie Leibovitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Freeman Patterson, William Neill and Richard Avedon.
One of the playlists on this channel is called "neighbourhood photographer" which covers tutorials shot in urban and suburban areas. It's always a challenge to see different things of interest when you've been to an area many times yet this is the best way to create good images. You need to return to familiar locations many times. To do so, Ray often drives by car to an area but when he really wants to cover ground yet see things more clearly, he uses his bicycle…bike…and explores the given place.
Whether shooting landscape, macro, portrait or abstract images, Ray always tries to be aware of his surroundings to capture the best pictures possible. Part of this workflow means he is very aware of composition and uses various tips, such as the rule of thirds, as a good starting point in composing. He also likes to break rules from time to time to add new effects to his photos. Being aware of angles, shadows, shapes, lines, textures, patterns and colours goes a long way to making good pictures. He is also a big believer in "getting out there" and shooting as much as possible as it is the only way to improve and flex one's imagination. His message is it doesn't matter if you do your photography in the city, suburbs country, mountains or by the sea, just make sure you do it and follow your artistic passion.

tx for posting do you need to change to spot metering for this type of outdoor shot or can you stay with matrix ? (nikon shooter)
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 7 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Good question. I stayed in matrix or evaluative if you want but you can get terrific results using spot metering on highlights. What I tend to do is use my centre point for focusing and focus on a highlighted area. I usually get what I want. Try both and see what works for you and good luck.

A perfect time to have the inverse square law work for you, but you'd have to watch for the flash head creeping into the shot. My digital cameras won't allow for exposure compensation in manual, I can only use it in P, Av and Tv. Some great shots, really liked the line of washing amongst others, but my favourite was the shot of you. It definitely proved it's not the kit but the photographer that counts. A brilliant video, as always very inspiring.
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. Hope you are well and thank you for the nice comment. Yes, I am always for the best kit you can afford but I'm a firm believer that if you are undertaking something that you don't plan to do often, lean to the budget side. The nice thing is if you end up loving it you can always invest more at that time. Take care Mark and have a wonderful day.

Hello Ray.! Been a subscriber for a long time now and have learned so much from your excellent videos. In this particular video, I didn't hear you mention what type of light metering mode do you use. I am assuming Spot metering? Would Matrix metering not work as well? I am a Nikon user and I know that Canon uses different terminology. Thanks for everything!
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. With spot metering it tends to give a pretty accurate exposure value whereas in this case, matrix metering would leave you a value that you need to underexpose. I use both and make the appropriate adjustment in camera. Thanks so much for being a part of the channel for so long. You’re support is much appreciated. Have a great weekend.

Hi Ray, i’m trying to get used to low key photography and found your video which is absolutely informative and gives me an idea on what to do. I do street photography most of the time so I’m 99% on aperture priority mode. I tried to expose on the main subject of the photo (i use spot metering mostly) and use exposure compensation to -2 to make the rest of the image black, however it just makes to whole image darker. What am I missing here?
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. This can be a little difficult because a lot depends on the light around your subject. Eg. if your subject is the same or darker than your background, and you expose for it with spot metering than if you underexpose, the whole thing will be darker including your subject. If you have a scenario where your subject is brighter than your background then you should be okay without actually under exposing too much. If you use a post processing software you’ll have more flexibility and if not you will require more trial and error but can have success with various underexposure techniques. Hope that makes some sense and helps. Let me know.
@ferdiyansurya
@ferdiyansurya 5 жыл бұрын
Visual Art Photography Tutorials thanks for replying! Just to have the same understanding, so the key is to have the subject brighter than the background, thus when i compensate the metering, it will make the background dark and the subject to more or less the desired exposure. Right?

Hello, what do you mean by exposure -2 or -3? How do I set this on my Nikon camera?
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I use different gear so it’ll be a little different but say you are using aperture priority mode, set your exposure compensation dial or button to -2 exposure. If you are in manual mode set your shutter speed or aperture to a value that will underexposed by say -2 stops. It’s all about setting a value that is less than the recommended “perfect” exposure.

I'm no pro... Actually just use my dslr for family gatherings and that kind of stuff. But got some pretty damn good low key portraits just by turning down the exposure, against a black curtain and a small flashlight, as I don't have one of those off-camera-flashes.

here is what I found out about photographing flowers in the day in low key. use flash, the flowers need to be in the shade, shoot across the flowers, so that the ground isn't' in the background, use a zoom lens and keep the flash as far away as possible so that the flowers behind aren't exposed. There will still need to be some adjustments in LR, but when the winds blowing you'll really get some great images.

Hi there. What I mean is focusing on a specific area usually using some spot metering so that you make sure that the one area you want exposed properly is. Or, you can make general exposure readings and then under or over expose as needed. The longer you do photography the better the feel you’ll get. Have a great weekend.

how can I expose just some part of the frame? How can I make the background dark? Thanks
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
You make the background dark by under exposing the image. Light up only the subject make sure very little light falls on the background and then expose for the subject and even expose a little under the value if necessary. Try using spot metering on the subject and that will likely leave your background dark.

Lucky photography = low-key photography perhaps?
@escoszickest

Why does everyone claims it’s super easy to achieve low key portraits but I️ cannot get it down? I️ use a small soft box on my speed light. I️ use a low setting on the flash power and I️ still get a lot of light spill on to the background, no matter how far I️ am. Is because I’m not using exposure compensation?
@VisualArtPhotography
@VisualArtPhotography 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario. Hmmm. Controlling light can be difficult at times to be sure. Try using a black background that absorbs light. Maybe velvet. Using negative exposure compensation can really help as well. Keep the background a good distance away and really focus the light on the subject. Using "burning" techniques during post processing can also work wonders especially if you shoot in RAW. Hope that helps and keep trying.
@McDaddy141
@McDaddy141 6 жыл бұрын
Is it a tiny softbox for the speedlught? If so, they do not work well for this. I tried it. Drove me crazy because it looks like it wouldn't spill light, but it does.

@SuperDonnaMO

Thanks for replying. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree here. To me, low key images are high contrast images, and high key are low contrast images. I don't think they should be created by under or over exposure. They can be created more skilfully by thinking about creating low or high contrast. There is nothing worse than seeing someone call an overexposed image high key. It's not high key, it's over exposed. Just my take on it. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. @@VisualArtPhotography
@andreak4280

Personally i don’t think the wording underexposed or overexposed is the correct term just because the background is either very dark or very bright - ie; low key or high key lighting. Yes, the low key lighting style has more contrast. BUT!! the actual subject should be exposed correctly! What is happening with the light beyond the subject may be brighter or darker as per lighting setup but the ‘subject’ should not be neither overexposed or “underexposed”. @SuperDonnaMO - yes, in short low key is more contrast / darker / heavier shadows

Hi Lala. Don’t worry. All photographers get stuck a little on something when they are starting out. I had my road blocks too. Just keep working at it, trying things out and searching for sources of help. Be patient and all of a sudden something will click and presto! you’ll get it. Understanding exposure is essential including exposure compensation and how plus and negative values have a huge impact on your photos. Keep trying😊
