On to Version 3 of my turbo oil drain with the use of an RB Racing standard scavenge pump.
Here's the parts that I used:

- RB Racing Standard scavenge pump (03-1034)
- Stainless hardware (03-1045)
- 2 10an x 3/8" bspp fittings (03-1038)
- 1 Add a circuit/fuse tap
- 2 straight 10an fittings
- 1 180* 10an fitting
- 1 90* 10an fitting
- 10an stainless braided line.

I was at the machine shop yesterday getting a cracked ear wielded on my m54 tubo. The machinist , super old gangster o.g. third generation engine builder. Took one look at my turbo drain. (In place of my a.c. condenser ) and said "bmw motors spin clockwise. If you ever saw one run with out tge cover, oil flings out of the mains. Having a engine rotate clockwise, with the tube I the 9 o'clock position looking from the front , it flings oil right up your drain tube. " made perfect sense with his swirly hand motions in front of my crank balancer.

M54b30s are known for oil going past the rings. The positive crankcase pressure may be exacerbating the issue.

That might be some of the smoke, but definitely not the majority. Oil restrictor eliminated most of the smoke.

I have no idea what the problem is but that car sounds like it’s running right. Just send it man. That car will let you know what it needs when you drive it.

Id just send that shit tbh. Keep checking your oil pressure and level after you rip it for a while. It may just be all the oil backed up in the turbo from before having the scavange pump. But it looks alot less than before and it might clear up after you beat on it a little bit.

Yup, it’s not as concerning to me at this point. More likely than not, I’ll add in a restrictor for safe measure

I would add an oil restrictor to the oil Feed line that might solve the issue. The turbo might be getting too much oil/ oil pressure and or build up 🤷🏾‍♂️

Had problems like this too, venting pcv to atmosphere helped at first, I think I need a new turbo as mine is ebay, next I'm going to change the oil drain

Oil drain is definitely super critical for this type of turbo setup

Hi. First block off the oil supply to the turbo to make sure the issue is the turbo. remember thee is alot of oil residue in the exhaust system. make sure it burns out completely for atleast one hour on idle or run the car for 15 minute it will clear out. if it remains smoking you know the deal allready. If it stops you can restrick the journal turbo oil flow a littile bit. if it is ball bearing. you must have restrictor. No one understand they need to flow match calculate there engine oil pump psi and volume to know if the scavenge pump can keepup. Oil type and visco also plays a huge roll. synthatic also plays a huge roll. daily driving needs 0-40 5w-40 as long it ends with 40. beating on it or drifting need to end with 50 or 60 oil grade.

Your scavenge pump isn’t working because you drilled the return on the oil pan too low so its probably submerged partially in oil. You have to re drill the oil pan return higher. Or you can move the return to the timing chain cover.

That would make sense if it smoked all the time, which it isn’t. It’s only after let off.

@@nuisance_carl didn’t it stop smoking when you took a quart of oil out of the car? You could use an oil restrict on the turbo too. Those eBay turbos are also know for smoking without the restrictor.

​@@nuisance_carl You shouldn't need to run a restrictor on a journal bearing turbo since they're designed to receive full oil pressure unlike ball bearing turbos. 90% of the time if a journal bearing turbo is smoking it needs a better oil drain. The best method is to have a tank under the turbo with a vent hose on top to a high point with an air filter or catch can like this video shows kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rteiiqmj35qsZac.html The oil scavenge pump should work with the return below the oil level but will probably drain oil into the turbo drain tank while sitting, so I would recommend installing a check valve between the pump and oil pan

Did you try to use the vacuum, to recirculate the drained oil from the turbo instead of using an external electric pump? I think you can use the catch can, to suck up oil, then drain back to the oilpan. Put a hose between the output plug of the catch can, and your intake manifold to use the engine vacuum under low loads. Drill a hole to the bottom of the catch can, put in a check valve and drive a hose to the stock dipstick tube ccv connector. Build in a PCV valve to the valve cover ccv plug to release positive pressure under boost to the atmosphere. Disconnect that hose from there, and connect it instead to your lower oil canister, to suck up oil from the canister. I think with this design you have vacuum, and maybe can reduce oil burning. What do you think about this? Sorry for my bad english. :)

I really would like to see someone trying this before trying to an m54b22 im having issues with using the same pump. I bought the project half done from a friend and im not sure if i need to service my turbine or try what u suggested to stop my oil burning issue.

Maybe add a diaphragm in the system on the input and exsist... I've seen in line one way valves that may help

I’ve seen that to help with startup smoke. That wouldn’t help during normal operation.

Too much oil in turbo?. A restrictor might help. Or check ur oil pressure. Probably getting to much oil.

Is it a maxspeedingrods turbo? Mine shit itself on first start up, never even turned a wheel. They weren’t interested in warranty either.

Maxpeedingrods turbo correct. At this price point, quality is pretty much expected to be hit or miss. Luckily, you can just take a stab at another one and still be way cheaper than a name brand turbo.

Is this a journal bearing turbo? If so, do NOT fit a restrictor in the feed line.

Mount your oil drain above the pan on the block a little past the oil pick up, also if your lazy put an oil restrictor with the scavange pump you just put in you’ll be fine.

What do you think about relocating the oil drain to the side of the timing case? When I was doing research for a place to put the oil return for my turbo I found a thread that showed going from the passenger side of the timing case.

Yes, I ended up adding a restrictor to the oil feed and now it smokes intermittently only a little on decel. It's only loud when priming. Under normal operation, I can't hear it, at least not over my loud exhaust. If you can prevent using one, I'd do that (like a SPA manifold and good oil drain). Otherwise, I'd get one size up from what I got.

See if the turbo is wet inside the exaust manifold before the turbo. Mi e was smoking because it was buildding to much pressure in the crankcase due to all the ringlands being cracked. See if it smokes from the oil cap like that when you let off if it dosent then turbine exaust sealing ring might be melted with the gap shut i would take off the oil cap and then the turbo if its only wet oil after the turbo amd not befor then the turbo is bad. Also make shure pressure isntover 40psi at the turbo becuase anything over 40 is too high and causes overfill off the cartridge and smoke to overflow into the exaust turbine causing smoke

I'm pretty sure it's not excess crankcase pressure. I'm going to try a restrictor on the oil feed.

I run the same exact setup with no restrictor same manifold same trurbo drain trubo same angles sme motor only difference is myturbo drain goes to te highest part of the pan above the windage tray so its higher than oil level even though its on the pan in the same spot itis juat closer to the bolts i remember the drill biet gits the metap tray barely i side the pan wehn you drill it i believe my drain hole is as higj as itcan go on thepan without itrunning out of room. You can run a restrictor but big turbo need lots of oil and a restrictor will starve it slowly and cover the issue up temporrarily i treed that also it work but kept cooking turbos so i mived the drain up and its been like that for 2 years no issues with ebay t3t4 no smoking

Put it on the rollers check the oil after a few passes it will be fine or go top mount but don’t think it’s that serious

Bro the issue you are having here is due to AN10 , they are so small for journal bearing turbo you need at least AN12 Journal bearings do not require any restriction

Pan is already drilled for 10an and I really don’t want to pull the pan atm. I’d rather get the scavenge pump working as best as it can

I just installed an oil feed restrictor and called it a day. If you have a decent turbo, I'd just get a better scavenge pump.

Hey dude im really not an mechanic but i wanted to build a turbo for about 3 years. I think its maybe the intake bridge or the crankshaft air. Would you like to talk on pc? My english writing is terrible but i really think i can help you. :)

Hi, you may want to check with turbosmart. They do have some oil pressure regulators for turbos. I think too much oil may be running in the turbo , or it may just be the turbo. Im also assuming your tuning was properly done , and your not running too rich, and you may be mistaken oil burning for some fuel burning. I would keep an eye on the oil level, to help you determine if indeed its oil, and how much its consuming. But on this end its hard to tell wether its blue or white smoke. I’ll probably just do a restrictor. Also good point on the fuel! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I have a lot of work to do to dial in the tune
